@@FVGrizzlybear I just bought my first boat (been sport fishing on all the local socal boats since I was a kid). Thanks to your inspiration I'm going to spend the next couple of years getting myself ready to transition to a full time commercial fisherman. After watching this video I spent hours looking up all the different permits and things lol.
Subscribed too! May I ask you the name of the boat? Is it Parker? Is the Parker boat really the ultimate fishing machine like others claim? If not, what other boats would you recommend for commercial fishing? I am planning to fish rock fish, tuna, yellowtail and spiny lobsters over the weekend in Southern California.
It is NOT a Parker. They are over rated, IMHO. Grizzly Bear is a 1984 Farallon pilot house. She was completely retrofitted in 2019 with new decks, fuel tank, outboard motor and bracket, electronics and more. She is a classic beast and I trust her to take me anywhere.
Im looking into starting my own commercial fishing business and was wondering if I would need a captains license for a boat of around like 50 foot? All I can find is anything over 100 tons or if you take passengers you need a license.
I don’t think you need a captains license unless you take passengers for hire. I have a master OUPV license but Best to contact Coast Guard for the official answer. I know that California requires a boating license now, but that’s another area that I’m not completely familiar with.
Ok, thank you. I'm still trying to figure out where I can actually fish and what I can catch. I'm in southern California, and the dept of fish and game regulations laws are a lot for me to wrap my head around. Is there any way you can make a video giving the short and sweet of what they all mean? And where to fish without having to buy someone else's license, ie lobster? Thanks for any help you can give me
I use Piscifun Alijoz 300. They are a great reel for the price. I have tried the more expensive name brand reels and they just don't hold up to everyday use any better than these.
I prefer the high speed gold and yellow ones. I think they are 8:1. The plus is you can burn the gear back fast to avoid blues and also get to the next cast quicker. The bad thing is that I have to consciously reel fish in slow to keep them from blowing up. I have had problems lately with so much dead loss, partly because of the high speed reels and getting too excited to catch the next fish before the current one is reeled in. I’m such a kid sometimes.
I have a 1984 farallon 25 that has been rebuilt with a 2023 Yamaha F300 outboard on an Armstrong bracket. I have close to 75k invested in the boat alone.
Market Price depends on species and whether it’s dead or alive, but a good overall average is $5.00/lb. Obviously, I target the species that pay the best and are easier to consistently catch, which for me are browns and gopher cod.
@@FVGrizzlybear Now that is summertime, I'm trying to experience the fisherman journey through a Part-time. Do you know where I can apply in L.A or close to.
Blues only pay $2/ lb but are part of the same quota as browns, which pay $7/ lb. I only have 2000 lbs of deeper quota every two months. If I only sold blues, I would end up making 5k a month less than if I only sold browns.
Not sure what you saying, I don’t keep anything less than 10” and the smaller ones add up. So much so that I’ve sold over 2300 lbs of rockfish in the last two months
Subscribed.
Looking to commercial fish out in PNW when I retire in 4.5 years. Thanks for the content.
Where are you at now?
Thank you for wonderful video ❤
Our pleasure! Wish we could do more, but our season is closed
Subscribed. Thanks for sharing this.
You’re welcome! I love to share what I love doing with others.
This is amazing info, if I could earn a living fishing I would be a truly happy man. Wife might miss me, but I would be truly happy.
If you love what you do then it’s not work.

Where you dock your boat at the marina?
I have a mooring at Port San Luis near Pismo beach.
What kind of camera are you using? Set up?
I used a 360 camera most of the time and a go pro for some shots. I also used my iPhone
@@FVGrizzlybear thank you

Where do you fish out of?
I head out of Port San Luis and fish anywhere from Vandenberg to the south and Morro Bay to the north.
New sub. What reel are you using?

@@FVGrizzlybear which gear ratio do you recommend for bottom fishing?

Which boat do you own. I asked the wrong question the other day.
Grizzly bear. 1985 25’ Farallon rebuilt in 2018 with a 2014 Yamaha F300 and repowered in 2023 with new 2023 F300
Why not long line fish
my boat is not set up for it and it’s a lot more work for not necessarily more fish.
With all the license you have ? Is there other methods of fishing ? Stead one by one fish?
Not sure of your question.
Yes long lining
Is this profession something you can quit your job and do plus maintain a house mortgage
Sometimes it’s fishing, sometimes it’s catching. Depends on how good you are.
What kind of boat is that my good Sir? What’s the cost to own one?
I have a 1984 farallon 25 that has been rebuilt with a 2023 Yamaha F300 outboard on an Armstrong bracket. I have close to 75k invested in the boat alone.

@@FVGrizzlybearthank you for sharing your video! New sub! Do you fish for halibut?
@@FVGrizzlybearwhat are you getting per pound on rockfish? Up in Alaska we are getting 8¢ a lb lmfao
Did you catsh octopus
Occasionally, but they are usually small, and I don’t have a market for them so I let them go.
Are you based in L.A?
Central coast. Port San Luis to be specific.

Unfortunately, no.

Lose Lips Sink Ships!!! Keep it to yourself guys
Shame on you. If you're so hard up for $ that you keep a 6 inch fish you may as well hang it up.

@FVGrizzlybear great video, and classy response.
