Great video, I was a commercial fisherman for 15 years in Nova Scotia Canada, fish dragging on browns bank and George's banks, also Heron saning, silver hack, shrimp and lobster fishing. We fished out of West pubnico Nova Scotia. I really love seeing different fishers, and how they do it.
I’d love to have this job. Only thing stopping me from getting up and moving to a fishing port like this to find work is my kiddo. If I wasn’t obligated to him above all I would probably try it
I just scored a deckhand job on the Misty Blue. A little more cramped than I would have imagined! I put my name in the hat on a facebook forum and I luckily was the first one to actually come out and show up when I said I was going to. Excited, but nervous. Headed to Kodiak Alaska around the 26th. Peter Pan cannery job. 15k for 60 days plus depending on how well we do we'll get an incentive. Our boat is not anywhere as modern as yours! We have the same washer dryer setup though! Cheers!

Bro, im so jealous of you. I would love to get on one of these catcher boats, but im not lucky enough to know anyone to get on haha. I was work on a Dutch as a processor and now i am going to be fisherman. Do u mind answer me if we need to do any processing with fish on the boat, like guys who doung processing on the facility? Or you jus catching fish
Being nervous is totally understandable I was the same way and still can be when learning new things. As long as you trust who you’re working with you will be fine!
@@always_markb I haven’t done it but imagine multiple conveyors of nasty ass fish running every direction with blood and guts and heads everywhere you turn, 12-24 hour shifts 7 days a week unless you’re steaming back or something is broken down, the majority of your coworkers are from Russia or Japan or China for whatever reason so you can’t communicate with most of them, you can literally die at any moment in one of the worst ways imaginable aside from fire but fires also a risk.. 😂 yea.. those boys earn their share on factory boats.

Hey bro I’m 21 years old wondering how I could get in an entry level job as a deckhand. How could I contact you for some tips if that’s possible, love the content been a subscriber for a while now. Thanks bro
Realistically you'd have to get a job as a processor on a catcher/processor (which fucking sucks, 16 hour shifts, down below decks all day) and if you do really well at that talk to the forman and the deck boss and maybe they'll try you out as a deckhand (youll probably still have to process but at least you get to go outside) Then after you know what you're doing there and have made some freinds in the industry you might be able to get a job on a catcher boat like this. These smaller boats don't really post job openings, you kind of just have to know someone and wait for the opportunity.
What’s something like this cost? I want to get into fishing, either US Alaska, Florida or head overseas? Peru or Indonesia. I see commercial fishing boats from 200,000 to 13,000,000. Licenses, insurance, etc….
as someone who fished in every kind of boat you can up there you should move to a H&G boat they make way more cash then just scooping up fishing and selling it super cheap to a factory to process don't waste your youth on crap money with you already being a deck hand you can move to any other boat into a nice highly paid position no waiting around for raises up to deck
Also who in their right mind would go from a gig paying metric fuck loads of money already, not really having to do THAT much physical labor (in comparison), with his own room and shit where he’s second in command to a job where he’s one of like 100 other dudes all trying to become one of the top 10 dudes and 110% do manual labor 16-20 hours a day. Not trying to speak for him but holy shit man I’m not even remotely a fisherman and even I can see that’s a shit move.
@@Halfstep2024 100? what kind of boat are you talking my boat only had 25 people on it they should prob consider upgrading to a h and g boat then they would make way more cash you make cents on the dollar delivering whole fish
Baybaybestie here, how do you and your coworkers maintain healthy relationships? Do your spouses come to see you guys when you’re gone for 6 months? It must be tough
Good questions! It’s not easy to maintain relationships we definitely all get frustrated with each other at certain points. We all get along pretty good though. We are there together and have the goal of getting the season over with so staying positive really helps and makes a big difference. As far as our relationships with our spouses we just have to text and call as much as we can. Being away from relationships at home is definitely the hardest part about the job. It’s two seasons though so we are gone 3 months at a time so it is a long time but atleast we don’t have to go the entire 6 months in a stretch.
Why are Lazarettes ALWAYS rusty and filthy, lol. Every single dragger I’ve ever fished on. Even lost a whole box of squid that broke apart in there after we filled the hold… nasty. 🤢

A lot of the pollock catcher boats like this don't actually have observers anymore. They have cameras that monitor for all the regulatory stuff and we do our data collection at the processing plants instead now. It looks like that's the settup they have here. Everyone I've talked to prefers it this way, when I observed on small boats like this I was just underfoot all the time and it's easier to collect data during the offload anyways.
I have been looking in to becoming a fisherman. I have done labor intensive jobs before. If you can somehow reach out to me. I live in Ohio right now but I have looked up the pros and cons. I am very interested though. I would be green but I am a quick learner.
