Hello, grilled mackerel enjoyer from Korea here. The fish will taste good no matter how it looks like, but maybe I can share some tips from my side of the world about grilling mackerels. Grilled mackerels on 11:56 look like that because mackerels have thin and weak skins. It will crumble easily when you move the fish on a grill or a pan. One way to cook both sides evenly without flipping it is to butterfly the fish before you grill it. You can then spread the butterflied mackerel it on the grill skin side down, and cover it with a lid. Because it is butterflied, the whole flesh is now half as thick, so the top part can be cooked only with the ambient heat between the lid and the grill. Meanwhile the skin will become harder and crispier because it can be grilled for a longer time without being disturbed. I know this very well because my frying pan looked just like your grill when I cooked mackerels by myself for the first time. It had skin and flesh sticking all over the pan's surface, and my mackerel wasn't as pretty as what I expected. That was when my mom gave me an advice to stop my mackerels from sticking to my pan and making a mess: don't flip the fish. No wonder she grills her fish with double-sided frying pans.
I starting fishing in the past few months for the first time in my life and it has completely taken over my life, I have multiple rods, many lures I dont need lol, and I even bought a kayak and go out 3-4 times a week in huge part to your videos. Mackerel... yum. Just between the pectoral fins you have the liver. Just above and forward is the heart. Keep those two when cleaning. There are so many preperation methods I've started writing a book. One of my favorites is fillet, separate the high and low loins. Each fish makes 4 finger fillets. Save the belly flap meat for bait. Double bread the fillets with a spicey mix and fry into delicious fish sticks. Eat with fat french fries and your favorite sauce, beer or soda. Hearts and livers go with breakfast. Mix them into scrambled eggs or sauté them and spread on crispy toast. Taste like eating a clean fish market.

Cape Cod was fished out of cod long ago. For years, the fishery in the Provincetown fleet was built on mackerel. The Portugues fishermen - actually Azorean - netted mackerel from vast schools. They said you could walk across the mackerel, they were so densely packed. Most all of their catch was shipped to southern Europe, where it was a staple. This was true right into the mid-20th century.
I happened to be eating a smoked mackerel dip when I came upon this video. My son and I are always thrilled to catch mackerel while fishing in the Gulf or Atlantic. We make dip, salted and brined for sushi rolls, smoked and dried for escabeche (pickled with vegetables) , jerky, and even burgers. I had ceviche in Nicaragua made with mackerel and it was good too. Nothing 'trash' at all about mackerel!
I dont even fish a lot anymore. Work got in the way, but in the midwest I love me some white bass! I feel it is very underappreciated. Now I am subbed and one day I wanna try some ocean fishing
I grew up in the Carribean... The thought of a fish being "trash" because it taste like fish is insane. If it's not poisonous I'm eating it . People just need to learn how to cook properly.
In France we love it. Freshly cooked in an oven with white wine and onions, grilled on the barbecue, fileted raw with lemon juice, smoked with black pepper, tinned, shredded cooked filets with cream cheese and chives, all ways of eating it. It's delicious
I’m Korean and we love that fish!!!! It’s good salted grilled, make spicy stew with radishes or potatoes! Why would some call it his trash fish? This is very nutritional fish packed with omegas

Mackerel has been frowned on in the USA but I will take it over about any meat. In Russia it is a staple smoked and simply fried it is fantastic. A fantastic source of protein and healthy fish oil. Sadly its increasing popularity will just cause prices to rise. Live healthy-eat fish!
As a Hongkonger, i eat fried Mackerel, with only salt seasoning and cornstarch for a crispy cover. I would add some kewpie, with black pepper, dipping it and have a day. Mackerel in fresh are very tastie, but in Hong kong (at least around my home), there is no fresh ones, so i eat quick-freeze one, which also taste very good. It is just tasty and umami

As person of Irish descent, and from a commercial fishing background I can confirm Irish do love mackerel. We cut them into steaks and boil them, or fillet them and fry them.
Grilled … it’s very tasty. Japanese style Saba Shioyaki or Teriyaki is so yummy! The flesh can also be used in an Asian fish broth such as ‘laksa’. Totally tasty.
Jaysus...they love mackerel here in Ireland, lads I work with go fishing in Wexford for mackerel, they'd have a list of fellas on site who want the fish.
That is how I made money when I was 10-13 catch a bunch of mackerel off the pier then sell them. It sure beat mowing lawns all summer. But I never used anything fancy to catch them just a bell sinker and 3-5 bare hooks and would constantly be catting 2 or more per cast.
I had raw makerel sashimi at a Japanese restaurant and it was one of the best raw fishes that I've had. I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was that way.
I think a lot of the hate for mackerel comes from eating it while it's not fresh, mackerel has a a very short window of when you can eat it. If you get it from the fish mongers, it's probably been kept on ice for a few days - the fish taste gets stronger and the meat becomes less firm. I always eat it the same day I catch it - a squeeze of lemon and some salt - and I usually eat it either with couscous or pasta and pesto.
You don't need any special rig to catch mackerel, my mum and grandpa used a line and hooks with silver paper from a bar of chocolate. They caught so many that they got a reduction in their B&B holiday charge as the landlady had what they could not eat.

Yeah I wear crocks also when I go out after capsizing with steel toed whites boots and having to swim 300 yards to shore .
It's crocks only for me now!
worked at a fish processing facility we mostly made fish paste out of it until they started to get less fish so they caned mackerel but it's best Smoked it is almost like Fish roe
mackerel sashimi, if you get it fresh, is out of this world. needs a lot of soy to offset some of that game but then wham, you have the perfect mouthful of fish and rice.
Cool looking fish, like the green and black stripes
As person of Irish descent, and from a commercial fishing background I can confirm Irish do love mackerel. We cut them into steaks and boil them, or fillet them and fry them.
One of might favorite memories as a kid was eating Spanish mackerel we caught. Grilled perfectly.
I've found it for sale fresh before. It doesn't taste bad - very oily, but fish oil is good for you.
we make fish sandwiches with mackerels and I love it. Just some onions, lettuce, lemon and a filet of mackerel.
I had raw makerel sashimi at a Japanese restaurant and it was one of the best raw fishes that I've had. I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was that way.
Great vid man, from sweden and many scandinavians love mackerel as well♥
Thanks for watching!
Mackerel is my 2 favorite fish lived in newfoundland. For 10 ish years. Used to get them all the time. On lobster and cod runs

My mother makes Spanish sardines with mackerels. You should try it sometime.
I agree if your protein is fresh you require less seasonings or long marinades
We eat mackerel cakes (like crab cakes) in Tennessee, at least we use to. I don’t know if the younger generation does. I love them.
We citizens of eats coast malaysian peninsular enjoy eat mackerel in many ways..we prized this fish as a good food fish not as baits only
I think a lot of the hate for mackerel comes from eating it while it's not fresh, mackerel has a a very short window of when you can eat it. If you get it from the fish mongers, it's probably been kept on ice for a few days - the fish taste gets stronger and the meat becomes less firm.
I always eat it the same day I catch it - a squeeze of lemon and some salt - and I usually eat it either with couscous or pasta and pesto.
German here. Us and the Dutch, we eat smoked Mackerel.
Also, I just bought a can of fried Mackerel in brine at ALDI, earlier today.
I catch them with spinning and is so delicious grilled, is so much fun catching they give a nice fight full of energy
Havent even seen the vid. I just know uts gonna be informational and good.
I love Mackerel!! If you don't wanna eat it, just give me a call and I'll take care of all that "trash" for you!!🤣
Lots of people here in south Florida consider mackerel trash, but lots think that it’s delicious if smoked and are fine with it for that.
You don't need any special rig to catch mackerel, my mum and grandpa used a line and hooks with silver paper from a bar of chocolate. They caught so many that they got a reduction in their B&B holiday charge as the landlady had what they could not eat.
