I am a commercial fisherman that specializes catching live rockfish on the Beautiful Central Coast of California! Come with us each week as me and my crew make a living and have a blast doing what we love- fishing!
I used Buoy gear for Gopher Cod- Commercial live rockfish
Im running out of Deeper Quota so I had to target the Nearshore species, specifically, Gopher Cod. The best way to do this is with buoy gear, so that's what I did. I will admit, I'm not very good at fishing gear, but heck, at least I get to fish!

We went all the way! and it Paid! Commercial rockfish
มุมมอง 985ปีที่แล้ว
We got to the boat and the weather looked so good that we changed our plans and went all the way down to Purisma Point. Well, it paid off, the browns were on the chew and we loaded a tank in a few hours. We then went in shallow and put some gopher cod and lings on the boat. We also released over a hundred pounds of Reds (vermillion rock fish) since we have already filled our quota. Come join us...
Take a kid to work day! - Commercial live rockfish

Today we ran back in and picked up the nephew of our fish wholesaler and took him fishing! We had lots of fun and hopefully showed him a few things. You never know, maybe he will grow up to be a commercial fisherman and live his dreams!
How to keep rockfish ALIVE!- Commercial live rockfish
มุมมอง 4.6Kปีที่แล้ว
Today we are fishing at Purisma Point and I am going to show you what we do to keep our rock fish alive and safe while we deliver them to the fish wholesaler. When we sell our fish live, we get more than double the price than if the rock fish were dead, so it's an important part of our operation. We ended up having an epic day and sell over 465 lbs of rockfish, mostly Browns, Vermillion, Lingco...

How to Find Rockfish - Commercial Fishing
มุมมอง 4Kปีที่แล้ว
In they video, I explain how I find rockfish to catch for the commercial market, because, of course, if there are no fish where you are fishing, they are pretty hard to catch. Most of my techniques will apply to sport fishing, as well. Come follow along as we make a living doing what we love!
How I rig and fish for commercial rockfish!
มุมมอง 3.8Kปีที่แล้ว
In this video, I go into more detail on how I rig and fish for commercial live rockfish off the California Coast. If you fish for rockfish for sport, you may learn a thing or two from us, as we make living catching and selling our catch!
How I Make Money Commercial fishing for rockfish
มุมมอง 14Kปีที่แล้ว
Today my plan is to give you an overview of how I make money catching fish. The fishing was slow and we ended up moving a lot, but we still managed 80 lbs of rockfish and made money. Come follow along as we earn a living doing what we love.

Thank you so much for these video's Grizzly, Sharing you're knowledge that you've put a lot of time an effort in is so cool of you. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say we love and appreciate it. I'm out in Ventura, no boat but I'm hopping someday to do what you do. Thanks for sharing the whole trip we can always skip. I like seeing it all, there is always something to lean if you're paying attention.
Thanks.
Awesome
Thank you.
Hey sir loved the video , I'm in San Diego and am looking to start commercial fishing , as like a side hustle , I'm having a hard time finding distributors and people to buy the fish , do you know any down here ? Or how to find them ?
What kind of license do you need for the commercial Rockfishing you do?
A California commercial fishing license and limited entry rockfish permits.
Why not long line fish
my boat is not set up for it and it’s a lot more work for not necessarily more fish.
How many hooks can you have on your setup when commercially fishing ? Is it regulated by district?
I’m not sure what you mean is it regulated by district but for me I can have up to 150 hooks in the water with only 15 per line.
What kind of camera are you using? Set up?
I used a 360 camera most of the time and a go pro for some shots. I also used my iPhone
@@FVGrizzlybear thank you
I've watched just about all your videos. I HAVE LEARNED SO MUCH !! I'm in the process of getting my OUPV licence. You are the olny one showing us reallife fishing ,and how. I need to get my sea service experience time logged. If you know of a F/V that needs great Crewman i have my commercial fishing lic cali and oregon
Good luck on your journey! You’ll need 360 days on the water for your sea service. I have lots of standby crew waiting for an opening so unfortunately I can’t help you but if I were you, I’d hang out at the closest port to you and start making friends. That’s usually how guys get a start. Good luck!
Subscribed too! May I ask you the name of the boat? Is it Parker? Is the Parker boat really the ultimate fishing machine like others claim? If not, what other boats would you recommend for commercial fishing? I am planning to fish rock fish, tuna, yellowtail and spiny lobsters over the weekend in Southern California.
It is NOT a Parker. They are over rated, IMHO. Grizzly Bear is a 1984 Farallon pilot house. She was completely retrofitted in 2019 with new decks, fuel tank, outboard motor and bracket, electronics and more. She is a classic beast and I trust her to take me anywhere.
Did you catsh octopus
Occasionally, but they are usually small, and I don’t have a market for them so I let them go.
Which snap latches did you use fir your lid?
If you are talking about my tanks, they came with them. However, I have seen similar ones on the web. Email me and I can send you better pictures.
Hello I am looking into starting my own commercial fishing business in the next few years and I am finding it difficult to find some information. Is there any way i could possibly pay you for your time and ask you some questions regarding regulations and such things?
Email me at fvgrizzlybear@gmail.com
@@FVGrizzlybear will do thank you so much.
Are you still doingi it?
Yes I’m still fishing
Are you no longer putting out commercial fishing videos?
I stopped making new videos due to lack of time and energy. It’s way more work to make a video while I’m fishing. I still fish 3-4 times a week.
New subscriber here. Great content. What boat do you have, and if you could buy again, what boat would you rather get for your type of fishing?
I have an older farallon and would buy the same boat again! Great boat and tough as nails
😮😢😮🎉
👍👌🤣
Great hall today! Having 2 mates help, makes a huge difference.
For sure
Great day of fishing. Seems like you are typically before noon. May I ask, how old are you?
We come back depending on the wind and tides. No use fishing when the fish won’t bite well or the conditions are tough. I’m 58
Do you ever do amy crabbing?
No crabbing
How often do you go out these days?
Whenever the weather permits. Try for 3-4 days a week
How long are your rods?
I use 8’-2” Phenix rods. Smx-82mh are my go to rod most of the time
Not bad
Thanks!
Man, you are giving me hope towards my retirement.
Good luck!
Subscribed. Looking to commercial fish out in PNW when I retire in 4.5 years. Thanks for the content.
Where are you at now?
What kind of spinner is that that wraps up the buoy line?
Custom made electric puller.
Do you ever use a drift sock?
Too much of a pain
@@FVGrizzlybear right on. Thanks for the reply.
Tree fish huh? They are a delicious little but i never would of guess it was a high value fish. Are they hard to target?
Near impossible to target. They do bite better in the dark and when I can I do focus on known tree fish areas. A great day of tree fish is still only like 10 fish total, compared to 150 browns for a great day
@@FVGrizzlybear very interesting and informative. Thank you. I hope some new videos are coming soon.
what kind of boat do you have my good sir? And what is the cost to own one?
I have a 1984 farallon 25 that has been rebuilt with a 2023 Yamaha F300 outboard on an Armstrong bracket. I have close to 75k invested in the boat alone.

I would love to learn how to become commercial fisherman in CA.
Best to find someone to apprentice with. There is a ton to learn
This is amazing info, if I could earn a living fishing I would be a truly happy man. Wife might miss me, but I would be truly happy.
If you love what you do then it’s not work.
@@FVGrizzlybear I just bought my first boat (been sport fishing on all the local socal boats since I was a kid). Thanks to your inspiration I'm going to spend the next couple of years getting myself ready to transition to a full time commercial fisherman. After watching this video I spent hours looking up all the different permits and things lol.
Are you based in L.A?
Central coast. Port San Luis to be specific.
@@FVGrizzlybear Now that is summertime, I'm trying to experience the fisherman journey through a Part-time. Do you know where I can apply in L.A or close to.
Unfortunately, no.
Why throw the reds back?
The quota for reds is only 300lbs period two month period. We had already reached our quota
Love your videos would love to get on board with you and learn the ropes super inspired to purchase my commercial next year
Email me at fvgrizzlybear@gmail.com. I have a long list of guys who want to crew but willing to add another if it’s a good fit.
Im looking into starting my own commercial fishing business and was wondering if I would need a captains license for a boat of around like 50 foot? All I can find is anything over 100 tons or if you take passengers you need a license.
I don’t think you need a captains license unless you take passengers for hire. I have a master OUPV license but Best to contact Coast Guard for the official answer. I know that California requires a boating license now, but that’s another area that I’m not completely familiar with.
Ok, thank you. I'm still trying to figure out where I can actually fish and what I can catch. I'm in southern California, and the dept of fish and game regulations laws are a lot for me to wrap my head around. Is there any way you can make a video giving the short and sweet of what they all mean? And where to fish without having to buy someone else's license, ie lobster? Thanks for any help you can give me
What are you using for your counter
I made it using a counter that I bought from Amazon and some starboard. It’s essential to know how many of most species so I do not go over my quota. Also, I wipe it down at the end of each trip with WD40, or they rust in a few months. Found that out the hard way. Here is a link to the counter. Counter Tally,Mechanical Counter... www.amazon.com/dp/B08JZ68FHC?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Thank you I am in Los Osos and just recently got my deeper near shore permit trying to figure it all out been enjoying you videos
hi, are commercials allowed to rake the species off limits to sportfishing? yelloweye, quillback, cow cod, etc?
No. We are closed to the take of cow cod, quillback and yellow eye. In fact, we were closed last year for November and December to all fishing, even though Sportfishing was open, while DFW decided how to handle the quillback closure.
Do you normally use a diamond jig with a grub above it for all rockfish?
That’s my go to rig most of the time. Watch this video th-cam.com/video/mfvhkdW3Gs8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=xF3FyMgc2plNADDt
Great and informative video, I enjoyed the fishing and the technique. I was wondering about the metal jig you used in the video you said you would show us how to make them.
I’ve been busy, but I will try to make a video on how I make them up and where I get the materials.
Shame on you. If you're so hard up for $ that you keep a 6 inch fish you may as well hang it up.
Not sure what you saying, I don’t keep anything less than 10” and the smaller ones add up. So much so that I’ve sold over 2300 lbs of rockfish in the last two months
@FVGrizzlybear great video, and classy response.
Awesome videos I’m enjoying them. I do have a question what is that yellow or bright lime colored piece that is just the above your rod grip handle
That’s just a label to identify which rod it is. I have a half a dozen of the same rods and reels and it’s nice to know which one is which.
Which boat do you own. I asked the wrong question the other day.
Grizzly bear. 1985 25’ Farallon rebuilt in 2018 with a 2014 Yamaha F300 and repowered in 2023 with new 2023 F300
Wow, I recently found you and happy I did. I am in San Diego. When I fished swordfish/shark I worked up there quite a bit and used to unload at Old Port Seafood. Is Barry still there? He was a really great guy. I always loved fishing up there. The local people in that area were the friendliest i have ever met. I wish you all the best in your fishing and thanks for sharing your fishing with all of us.
Unfortunately Olde Port Seafood is gone. butch was the last owner. Barry must have been before my time. Thanks.
Love the videos! I live nearby, is it possible to come to pier to buy some fishes from you?
Absolutely. Send me an email and I’ll email back my phone number
With all the license you have ? Is there other methods of fishing ? Stead one by one fish?
Not sure of your question.
Yes long lining
Hey nice to see you guys fishing, i sure made a mistake by not renewing my nearshore permit ,back in 97 some one came up with the idea that gophers take so long to grow , something ridiculous like 50 plus years. Which is toatally untrue ,they placed a mortturiam .on the whole rockfishing gig .i have ben fishing commercial since i was a kid my father Nolan martins ,cowboy 1 mainly fished salmon and gophers ,till his death 1982, out of monterey .i took over the boat in 95 hat trap endorsment and spot prawn . There are olny 5 boats in monterey if that that fish live rockfish .. any ways nice to see your style of fishing ,jigs are the best you got it with the structure and verticey
Nearshore permits are like gold these days. Friend just sold one for 60k. Too bad, but I live with no regrets.
Would it be profitable or possible to commercial fish solo with no crew? Thanks.
Sometimes. Depends on conditions. But I’d rather take a few crew and not only potentially make more money, but share the wealth and experience.
I live up in Washington State. Run a non-commercial boat, on Puget's Sound, Strait of Juan de Fuca, and off the coast. Never heard of a Gopher rockfish. Retired Bering Sea halibut fisherman, so I thoroughly enjoy watching your video content in Winter, while I'm bottled up ashore for bad weather. 🇧🇻👍
Gopher cod are our shallow water go to species. Similar to a quillback.
What port do you fish out of?
Port San Luis
