    I love the fact that episode 3 was a representation of religion to the extreme, and the next episode represents science to the extreme, showing us that no matter what you prefer to believe in, nothing is good when it's too extreme

    • @Rebuswind
      @Rebuswind 2 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      The difference is problems made from believe in science is someone's personal choice, science did not ask that father to do anything like that, he did that because he care about his "honor" and personal goal more than his loved one's life. On the other hand, religion is literally causing all the issues, they took people's choice away by telling people they can receive unreal goal as long as they believe in god.
      without science and religion, good people still do good things, bad people still do bad thing. However, only things like religion can make good people do bad things and bad people do bad thing while thinking they are doing them for god.
      this episode is not talking about believe in science to extreme, this is about believe in personal gain and honor to extreme.

      @@Rebuswind In either case, you are choosing one or the other to further your goals.
      People who follow religion do so by choice. Religion does not take choice away. Just as Shou Tucker chose Science at an extreme to secure his title as State Alchemist, Rose chose Religion at an extreme to secure a future with her fiancé.

    You know what's crazy is that this was even sadder in the original 2003 anime. We spend multiple episodes with Nina and Alexander, and Shao Tucker isn't lamp shaded to be evil in nearly as obvious a way. They also changed around the timeline a little bit, it happens before Ed's State exam in that version (which is why he was studying with Tucker in the first place) so Ed was much younger too.

      I don't think Cornello was more religious than religious characters in the show who are good people, and Tucker wasn't more scientific than other characters who study science. I'd say it's more specifically that they didn't care about the people impacted by their actions and found a way to justify it, which can happen no matter whether you are devoted to religion or follow a scientific perspective. Like you said, there are a wide range of worldviews people have, and you can be a good person following the vast majority of them, but people also find ways to to horrific things no matter what worldview they follow.

    It's so crazy how this episode is THIS episode. When it condensed an arc that originally took a long time into a single episode because it assumes you already watched the first one. I really wish there was some way to splice like the first ~20 episodes of the original series and continue with brotherhood from there, because brotherhood rushes through so much. And this moment, this scene, is like 10x more impactful and heart wrenching in the original.

    One of the aspects of this show’s genius is the balance. This is one of the most horrific, dark scenes you could ever imagine, but this show will balance it out with other scenes that are incredibly heartwarming. This show is both serious and humorous. It will make you laugh and cry. It won’t keep you in one emotional state for so long that you feel you’re drowning, but it doesn’t make the ride easy either. I love this show so much. This episode and the last one are really important for the themes of the show. We are shown two sides of the faith/science divide, one where someone invokes faith in order to justify their corruption, the other invoking science to justify their callousness. Both villains use people for their own selfish ends, but frame their actions in a broader, grander context. Meanwhile, Ed and Al reject these two villains as being clearly wrong, but both represent logical extensions of their past actions and future goals, and they're going to need to contend with that

The show happened before the manga was finished, so what happens after a certain point is entirely made up for the show. FMA: Brotherhood follows the manga's full story.

      Its sort of a coping mechanism for anime fans. I've seen all anime fandoms using memes to cope with tragic moments. Popular instance: Half jokes from Marco in AOT (you know the one)

      Bro the creator memes is, how is it the worst part

      yikes, imagine when they react to re: zero and Shield hero. They're gonna Scream with rage and cry at the same time. But yeah, this FMA episode is the Greatest and darkest episode ever. Even after YEARS its over, this episode is pretty much the THEE episode when I think of FMA. Its not JUST dark, its sad, tragic and sickening (even literally for some humans) all in one episode. Not just anime but in general.

    This episode is the equivalent to Aot S1ep5 in the terms of shock value in the beginning of a show

    in the 2003 version this episode is even more shocking since they present the dr as alot nicer (this anime is closer to the manga in the long run but early on cut stuff out so people who watched the 2003 version dont need to see the same beginning stuff even though some of its important)

      Don’t forget 2003 gives Tucker donkey ears later, like I know they were running out of manga materials, but come on, really?!

    Idk how much normal people are acquainted with the process of research, but among us researchers there's the mantra of "publish or perish". You can work hard your whole career but if you don't publish, you're not going anywhere. On top of that, research is like 90% failure, so most of it goes either unpublished or published into nameless journals that take negative data. So there's been many cases when researchers have seen things that weren't there, just so they could keep publishing (see: STAP cells, Koko the gorilla (though the latter is controvertial)).
