About what Scar (The guy who killed Shou Tucker) said in episode 4, the wording was changed in the dub of episode 4. If you hear the original Japanese dialogue, he says "God, two souls have been returned to you.". Never does he say two HUMAN souls. He wasn't talking about the souls of Shou and Nina, he was talking about the souls of Nina and Alexander (the dog). He never prays for the State Alchemists he kills, as he considers them sinners, but he killed Nina and Alexander purely out of mercy, and prayed to God to give them some peace in their death.

Just a correction. The Ishvalans weren't spreading their faith into the region... they were annexed into the country, so our characters don't exactly have a moral highground. The Ishvalans were being forced to be a part of the current nation (Amestris) but they resisted because they had their own beliefs which was against Alchemy.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but the Ishvalan's (shown in the war flashback) were not religious extremists. Roy just noted their beliefs because it was something they would not give up even after being annexed by Amestris (the country under Bradley and where everything is taking place thus far). Then the thing with the child getting shot happened and that's when they revolted and then it was shown that the red of Ishval was spreading. I think you may have confused that visual as meaning they were spreading the religion but that was simply to show that the revolution against Amestris was spreading. That is when the order to exterminate Ishval and all Ishavalan people came down. So it was never a matter of them trying to spread religion but rather them trying to maintain their beliefs after getting annexed and then the revolution spreading. Also Leto, the god the priest from episode 3 evoked is not the same god Ishvalan's believe in

you're correct, I think they just misinterpreted what was said. The Ishvalans were annexed into the country. Basically they were invaded and absorbed but they resisted. This show may hit you in the gut with episodes like 4, but it also hits you in the feels with episodes like this, and the next. Seeing Hawkeye put the jacket on Ed is such a sweet moment. Ed is in the military, and in many ways he tries to put on a mature front. Roy and Hawkeye both at times treat him as such, but they also have a love for the boys, and an understanding of where they came from. This episode starts out really sad, and it shows just how hurt the boys are, but they have to keep pressing forward, just like Ed told Rose in episode 3.

I don't know, I think the Ishvalan survivor is more than justified in taking revenge. Targeting Ed and Al is an exception sure but everyone else he targeted had a hand in the genocide. Revenge isn't the answer but that's easy to say from our comfortable positions and it's certainly easy for Ed and Al to say. They've been through a lot but that doesn't compare to genocide. All the characters that we love, as we saw in this episode do have blood on their hands including children's (even if they just followed orders), It's important to remember that and not let our love for them cloud the lessons that the writer is also trying to convey.

I don't even think that's revenge. That was justified self defence. Ishval was an occupied state and Scar was attacking military personel, in the logics of war killing Ed was right bc even if he doesn't want to admit it, he's a human weapon too. If a soldier do that today in the conflict we all know in Europe everyone would call him a hero. Scar was right.

Ed is legit like... the most satisfying character ever, especially his moral code and intellect. I'd say he's the smarted shonen protagonist out there. So satisfying to watch his progression 😩

One of the unique shonen protag imo. Not a dumb down super powerful protag. Not that its bad. Bad the trope is saturated. But not also the depressed emo type pessimistic protag that would make morally questionable deeds not that those protag is not intriguing and interesting. Ed was a more balanced protag in aspects of emotion, intellect, skills, attitude, talent, overall charisma. But all that just my humble opinion. I am just a human after all.

He's definitely the best written one. The thing I like most about what the writers did was not making him have some secret power he inherited from his lineage or something. It's all him and he learns and grows. In my opinion he was a bit arrogant at the start and that's why he needed to be knocked down a peg or two but that's also a part of his journey.

    • @marcodulangon2551

@@gemelwalters2942 yeah. He is knowledgeable prodigy of sorts already so the show is about his journey of learning about life that despite his skills and knowledge he is just human. Journey to humility. He is already at the top of the game in terms of skills in alchemy when the show started. His journey is not about "the king of alchemy" or some kind like. But dont get me wrong I dont hate or dislike those. His journey is just not on the common shonen troupe in this shonen vibe. Thats my opinion anyway

That is actually the Fullmetal Alchemist Original (2003). In the comics, the story arc goes the same as what you guys have seen in the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009). Fullmetal Alchemist Original was a series that was produced and finished before the actual manga was done, so it only follows the first few plots of the original comics (which is ironic, when you think about the name haha) and pretty much adapted a new story out of it. That is why its story building on Nina and Alexander was different in that particular series.

Precision about One Piece : It has more than 1000 episodes because they basically do one episode per chapter, when other animes usually do 1 episode per 4-5 chapter.
But FMA has long chapter (2 or 3 times longer than a One Piece one for exemple) so it's more of 1 episode for 1-2 chapters (the manga has 108 chapters in 27 volumes)

There’s another way that the Nina episode was worse in the 2005 anime. When Scar killed the Nina+Alexander chimera, he did it offscreen as well, but caused it to violently explode. This left behind a bloodstain on the wall in the general shape of the chimera, and Ed and Al walked in and saw this. The show then frequently flashes the image of that bloodstain whenever the boys remember Nina. None of that in this show, thankfully. It was powerful in the old show, but my goodness, no thank you. ._.

Talking about why the war happened with Ishvalans, you missed one key word--which is easy to do, because it's subtle: Roy says Amestris "annexed" them. Which is a fancy way of saying Amestris conquered them--they used to be independent until Amestris took them over, and there were a lot of tensions between them and the Amestrians after that. Then the child got shot and the Ishvalans rebelled. There's nothing about them ever trying to spread their religion--it was the rebellion that Roy says spread across the eastern region, not their religion.
