    Nice technique Lisa but not sure if it's a good idea to attach the figure of eight on a bight to the gear loop as they generally aren't load bearing. I would think it would be better to attach the bight to the leg loop of your harness ?

    • @lisahisownfamily
      @lisahisownfamily  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Roy Wilson, right on. The gear loops on my harness are not load-bearing. In this system it is not put in a load bearing position because if the grigri cam were to fail, the rope would slide through until the knot wedged in the grigri. The eight on a bite attached to my gear loop would drapped from my grigri to the gear loop but it would not be tight. It's also perfectly fine to leave the eight on a bite dangling rather than clipping it to the side. Clipping it just keeps it handy. Great comment.

    Thank you Lisa. For some reason at the age of 63 after 40 years I am again interested in climbing, just a little bit for upper body mainly. Nothing much has changed, except you Ladies have come a long way. Thanks

      Dirk Anderson, I'm glad that you are getting back into climbing. It's a fun and rewarding sport. I am continually impressed by the high caliber of both female and male climbers. It's a privilege to get a chance to climb on hard routes like this one. Thanks for writing and have lots of fun rediscovering climbing!!

    All about this. Love it that you never let go of the brake strand even though you’re on a grigri. +1 for belay loop or leg loop with that backup, would suck to have to extract a jammed knot from the grigri if the gear loop broke.

    Another reason why i go solo on most of my trips nowadays too. most of my mates are terrified of heights which doesn't help at all.:(
    I like that you were able to get a long shot so we could see the actual climb in progress.and the technique.
    some of your earlier videos actually inspired me to finally get out there again so thanks for that little push Lisa.

      Gizmos' Adventures, I'm glad that you have been able to return to climbing. I enjoy climbing with others, but soloing is a different experience altogether. There's unique kind of freedom that I don't feel in regular climbing. Thank you for sharing. I uploaded these videos to build and share with the climbing community. My first one had some mistakes that a lot of people were pretty unhappy about, so I almost didn't post any more videos after that. Hearing that it's helped you, encourages me to keep going as well. I appreciate it. :)

    This technique is near to the one that Treeclimbers use. U can use Prusik or some other kind of Constriction-Knot instead of the Grigri. It´s more save, because they work 100% in that situation.

    • @lisahisownfamily
      @lisahisownfamily  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Treemander, thanks for sharing. Tree climbing seems fun; I've never had an opportunity to try it out yet. Others have suggested the prussik as well. The only thing I'm thinking is that it might take a bit more time to loosen and slide up, while you are climbing. I bet that if you are really comfortable using the prussik it would be just fine though.

      @@lisahisownfamily I know this is an older video and comment/response, but as both a rock climber and a tree climber, this is exactly what tree climbers call an MRS (moving rope system). the old school way of doing it is with a Blakes Hitch as the friction hitch in place of the grigri (prussik is absolutely the worst of all friction hitches because its bidirection). there are other hitches that work as well - slide easily in one direction and grab immediately in the other), but nearly all climbing arborist use a mechanical device now. thanks for the vid! found it while studying up for top rope soloing so I can get in more climbing! cheers!

    Nice video. Thanks for sharing your technique. Just a quick question. Is it also possible to use a leg wrap to wrap the rope around your leg and go hands free instead of knotting and clipping into the locking biner on the gear loop?

    • @lisahisownfamily
      @lisahisownfamily  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      T Sizzle, you could probably do that. I think the knot on a bite is a good way to go though, because it's fast and very solid. As other viewers have commented, it's not necessary to clip it to a biner.

    Steelworkers Park in chicago has places for you to put your rope in as you lead climb but there is no access to the top of the rock climbing wall. If I'd like to top rope self belay, what is the best way to do it safely?

  • @tainopr4356
    @tainopr4356 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    This is a good example of the difference between thinking you know and knowing what you’re doing. I will resist the temptation of telling you how to misuse gear safely and say this instead. First a Gri Gri is an assisted belay device, not an ascender. There’s already gear on the market to do this safely, like a Wren Soloist. Second gear loops are not a load bearing part of your harness. We have a responsibility when we post. Someone inexperienced can see this video attempt it and kill them selves. There’s already people in the comments saying they can’t wait to try it.

      TainoPR 43 aren't she really going nowhere even if that loop snaps out, rope knot is still gonna jam in grigri anyway right or I am missing something? Isn't she just doing it to keep the rope in place not to dangle anywhere?

    • @lisahisownfamily
      @lisahisownfamily  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ernie P, yes, that's exactly what I was doing. I'm not sure why people think the gear loop is in a load-bearing situation.

    • @Dan-lh7hw
      @Dan-lh7hw 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There's nothing unsafe about jugging yourself up using a Gri-Gri. I use the same method for bolting routes.
      The only thing is unless you're using a Metolius safetech harness that gear loop isn't saving anything. If the Gri-Gri has a catastrophic failure it would be better to clip your backup knot into your belay loop. Make sure you're tying a backup knot every 10' of slack you pull and use two lockers do your not ever unclipped from your backup. Then just untie your knots in the way down.

    Hi, thank you so much for your videos. I love the safety and back ups you use and show. I have four kids myself so it's right up my alley when doing tough highball climbs. Question, have you heard of anyone in particulars grigri's cam failing? This is the second video I've seen with the back up knot incase the grigri fails.

    • @lisahisownfamily
      @lisahisownfamily  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kaz Hatfield, thanks for writting. I have gotten lots of feedback from TH-cam folks concerned that I am not being safe enough with the grigri. One person is a first responder who said he'd seen an accident from the grigri not camming. I dont know the details about it. That is the closest I've ever been to a grigri-not-camming accident. The only time I've ever noticed a very slow slide is when we were using a thin, brand new rope. Once someone I knew loaded the grigri backwards, the climber was fine and was lowered like an atc, but I could see this error causing serious accidents. As for the grigri self-belay, I feel safe using this method and have used it since the late 90s. Everyone should decide for themselves, especially since it's not recommended by Petzl. Thanks again for writting. Be safe with those highballs and have fun climbing with your kids!!

    • @hatfieldkaz
      @hatfieldkaz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a million. And as far as back ups go I've seen you use three or so of them. Is the SOB your favorite or what is your preference?

    • @lisahisownfamily
      @lisahisownfamily  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kaz Hatfield, I really like the SOB. I found out after I bought it that it's a knock off of the CAMP ascender. I would go with the CAMP ascender, second time around. I did NOT like the zinda and would not buy any of their devices. The Petzl shunt is pretty good too. Down sides are that there's a lot of drag with it and it's easy to accidentally un-cam. Next time I TR solo, I'm planning on using the SOB with the chest harness on the fixed side of the rope and the grigri on belay loop on the free (rappel) side on the rope. I haven't personally used the manual siding toothed ascenders because I haven't wanted to damage my rope. Hope that's helpful!!

      you tie your back up knot to the belay loop (thanks to a carabiner)( 2:20 ), you don't really need to attach those knot to something (they act like a stopper knot), but here, by connecting those one to the belay loop, you risk to snatch them (don't know the exact term)

    • @lisahisownfamily
      @lisahisownfamily  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Okay, I see what you're referring to. You're suggesting not clipping the back-up safety knot to my gear loop. I started getting in the habit of doing that when I had a stiff new rope. Knots on a bite would tend to loosen themselves quite a bit. I think you're right, though; it isn't necessary. Thanks for posting!
