  • Stephanie was given 2300 yo yos to make a king size quilt: here is how she started the project and pointers/tips for any size (larger size) yo yo quilt. Read the description to find the glue I forgot to mention.
    Materials:
    1. Quilt base/sandwich: backing, batting, top (I used 104" fabric to eliminate having joining seams on the front). Lightly wash backing and top to remove sizing: press well.
Place on smooth surface, layer materials, smooth, pin or baste to hold in place.
Periodically place a pin perpendicular to the quilt top for a center line from top down a yard or so; do a section at a time as you work.
    2. Marking the quilt top for yo yo positions:
(Yo yos - 4.5 fabric circle base)
I used a 1 x 4 inch board about 39" long to mark yo yo positions. One edge had a mark 2 1/2" down, and then 3 1/2" inches until 39" had marks. Then, on the other edge place a mark 4" down, and then 3 1/2"inches until end of board length.
    3. You are working on the front of the quilt. Starting with the center line (with the perpendicular pins) place the board, either edge, parallel to the pins. With a permanent sharpie lightly make a dot at each mark on the side you have chosen.
    4. Move board over 3 inches all the way to end of section you are working on. Now use the other edge you did not mark in step 3 (this will make your yo yos alternate higher or lower). Place a light mark following the marks on this side of the board.
    5. Now make light marks around each dot to use for making stars which will show up on the back side of the quilt. I added 4 corners and then added between those when sewing to make a pointed star.
    4. Lay out a column or 2 of yo yos. (Check positions, and color placement.) I used permanent, fabric glue...very small drops...to anchor the center of each yo yo. When a column was in place, I placed the marking board on top to help anchor yo yos. Read all directions with the glue.
    5. Sewing the yo yos: I sewed the top half from right over the top to the left, lifted the yo yo edge and moved the remaining thread back to the starting point and sewed from right down and around to left.
This is not a boring project because you mark, sew stars, glue, sew yo yos.

I didn't really know how neat it was until it was done and put on her bed.

WOW! You are amazing and fearless to take a project like that on. I cannot imagine the time it took the woman who made the yo yo's and then turning them into a quilt.😍💖

She is going to come and pick up the quilt tomorrow. I can't wait for her to see it! This can be done on a much smaller scale. Thanks for comments!

This was the first one like this I have done. If you like this, the final video is scheduled for April 25.
