#228 Hand Stitching Baby Bear Paws Quilt Blocks Using Orphan Fabrics, Lights and Darks
Stephanie at Hightower Stitching shares a tutorial for hand stitching baby bear paw blocks using template, and left-over smaller pieces of light and dark fabrics. It takes 120 bear paws divided into groups of 4 to make 30 blocks (5 x "6). Sashing 1 is between the four blocks (1" x 3 1/2") Sashing 2 and setting blocks (1 1/2") are between each 6 1/2" block. The outside border is 2 1/2" wide. CORRECTION: The four blocks have sashing between them! It is 1" x 3 1/2". The bear paws do not touch! Measure new triangle square to be 2 1/2" and 1 7/8" square one to be 1 1/2".

      I intended to hand stitch all of the blocks, but the pieces are quite small and to move quicker, I changed to the sewing machine. Due to the small pieces ,I did a lot of chain stitching to help keep pieces from being pulled down into the machine. When I would start, I used a piece of fabric to start and sometimes gently pulled that piece of fabric. I just finished the 120 blocks and getting ready to add the sashing that goes between the 4 - 3 1'2" blocks to make a larger block. I didn't cut all the pieces and then start piecing. I would do about 10 -15 and sew those. I am going to call mine My Colors Sampler and will share on line.

    I found a set of dresden plates on a fabric such as you described! I worked at Jo Ann for a long time and I believe it was osnaburg fabric! That fabric was used in the Civil War era for utility sewing such as boys britches etc.Very hard wearing material. Mh solution was to remove the plates stitched like the butterflys and needleturn applique to ivory muslin. I still need to finish the top now that I've retired! 🎉

    I really like this quilt and I’m not even a blue fan, but my daughter would love this. I see a Christmas gift in her future. This would go together super fast, especially with the chain stitching. Any jellyroll would work with this pattern, I even have a blue jellyroll (Isobel by Windham fabrics) I bought it as a daily deal from Missouri Star, I must of bought it subconsciously thinking of my daughter..Thsnkmyou for the free pattern 😊

    Pretty color combos, love the muted browns, greens and blues in the first tablerunner. I like having a project at night too. But this is a classic courthouse steps quilt block, idk why they’re calling this a log cabin, it goes together exactly like the courthouse steps. Maybe it’s because the courthouse steps was born from the log cabin. Regardless, nice work, Stephanie. 😊

    Hi. Just watched your video. I have a yo-yo quilt from my great aunt that she made. I need to repair at least 20 of them. Don’t want to take it apart just repair on quilt? Am I making sense? Thought I’d iron the edges and make a new start of thread to pull it. Anyway thanks for the video showing how. Any tips?

    • @StephanieKitchens4340
      @StephanieKitchens4340 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If the material is still in sewable shape, just take new thread to join the yo-yos. If any yo-yos are falling apart, you could find material that looks very similar and add a new yo-yo. That is so nice that you have a family quilt. Good luck.

    Hii!I just wanna ask how you did the template?Ive been so confused on the measuring

    • @StephanieKitchens4340
      @StephanieKitchens4340 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I went back to the video to make sure I went the right direction. My template was probably cut by drawing around a kitchens bowl or saucer; I ended up with a circle diameter (going across the shape) of 4 1/2". Then I made a sample yo-yo by turning in about 1/4" on the edge. When I got done making the yo-yo I measured across and found that the yo-yo was between a little over 2". I liked that size. If you consistently turn in the same amount of the edge, pretty soon the yo-yos are more and more consistent. 1. One way to speed up cutting all the circles (using the 4 1/2" size) is to cut a 5" strip of fabric the width of the fabric. Lay a few strips on top of each other (they can be a variety of patterns) cut the layer strip into 5" squares. Then cut out your circles. 2. Or, if you buy/have 5" square pre-cuts, stack some, trace circle, cut. I hope I was close to what you need. Please, let me know if I didn't! S

    • @StephanieKitchens4340
      @StephanieKitchens4340 หลายเดือนก่อน

      4 pieces of paper later, I think I have an idea. Going for 100x100" q.- Using the original pattern, leaving the center square the same, add 2-4 1/2" squares to both ends of each row. (That should be a 4-square & a solid) added at both ends. Later, two 'mini' rows will need to be added to the top left corner & to the bottom right corner. The final border was 4" (4.5" cut before adding)/can be adjusted to get closer to 100 x 100"; measure each side for border length. I really liked doing this pattern, and this might be a way to do it again! (Gave it my best...no guarantee.) Enjoy!

    I hand sewed a Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt when I was pregnant with our first child in 1976. Got the top finished, sandwiched, and started hand quilting. I found I didn’t like hand quilting and wrapped it in a sheet and stored it away - for 46 years. I pulled it out when I took up quilting again at age 70. I started learning free motion quilting but didn’t want to mess up my very first quilt so I sent it out to a longarm quilter. I love what she did with it. I found a fun fabric to make my own bias binding and finally finished it this January, 2024.

      It takes a while to make the 4 patch squares; but, can be fun when matching the patches to the person receiving the quilt. Thank you for watching!

    How wonderful. 3 quilts that are totally different in color and mood. I found you because even though I have quilted for years, on my bucket list is hand stitching and hand quilting. Two things I haven't done. Very inspirational ladies!

      I usually get something round from the kitchen (cut, glass, bowl) that is the size I think I want to use. Then make a cardboard pattern and trace that on fabric. I hope that helps.

      I make a lot of quilts from fat quarters. I am not sure about this set, which I used as a base and then added more colors I liked. 120 stars of 2 or more colors takes a lot of looking at colors. I usually order fat quarter sets on-line from Connecting Threads and the Fat Quarter Shop . Reminder: if quilt is too narrow, add another column or 2.

    This is absolutely gorgeous, I love it. Wow, only 1 more row! Will you add a border and hand quilt this one? This is my favorite quilt that I’ve watched you make.

      Thanks for watching! I love this quilt and can't decide to hand stitch it or machine stitch (there are so many lovely open hexagons. The two ends just needed to have the overhanging diamonds trimmed. For the long sides, I made muslin diamonds (using the pattern already used) and sewed on e between the legs of the stars to fill the space; then the sides will be straight and I will bind the edges when done. It would be so easy to add another column or two if a wider quilt was desired. I won't add a border.
