I have so many that some are even "discontinued" as in they basically don't exist anymore ..Tho, maybe I could get around to doing a redraw for nostalgia's sake...
the last time i counted the number of OCs, I had over 300 (that was about 2/3 years ago, i gave up counting since then) But I don't see having tons of OCs as a bad thing, you can see your character creation improving throughout the years (but yeah, I don't even remember some characters so it might be kind of a waste sometimes)
I think not being afraid to embrace even the weirdest and most incoherent ideas and fleshing them out. It has really helped me out. Also, if you want to draw sometimes it is good to take inspiration from emotions or things that would feel familiar on a wide scale. It ends up connecting with a wider variety of audiences especially if it the piece is a little more left to interpretation. Just thought I might share some things that help me create.
Yesssss love that It applies to a lot of things Sure, starting out your idea might be stupid but if you don’t toss it out as not good enough, and you give it a chance, it could become something really unique and amazing and something rarely seen!

7:16 “Keep a secret sketchbook that’s just for yourself so you can practice without worrying about other’s opinions” Nosy strict parents: *Imma pretend I didn’t see that.*
That one about keeping some art to yourself really hit the most, I always look at art I make like "what will people think of this? what will people think of ME? will this get any heart reactions? is this "cringe"?" and very often I always plan to scan and show my art to at least my friends. So, thanks for reminding me that I do have that option of freedom if I want.
This is what I do Whenever I cant think of anything to draw: Think of a Character Think about their story Draw the character with their friend or enemy. Think about how they would react when they see each other or they were forced to hang out. Background: Weird shapes The end.

Haven't watched her that long, but yes, there's some good improvement in her newer art compared to older. She's still young. I still remember the days before internet.
If I could tack on a piece of advice that I’ve been following myself recently: if you start to feel burnt out and have all these ideas, reduce your art to a rougher, faster version, like a rough sketch or very simple style. Make your art simple enough to show the ideas you want to get across, and then just move on to the next. Sometimes we overwhelm ourselves by needing to fully render a drawing, and burn ourselves out on an idea before we get there. If you feel comfortable to going further or rendering, do it once you have everything down, but give yourself some time between the sketching and the rendering.
My mom does the same thing. Hide at least one sketchbook. Make a reputation with them of drawing really conventional stuff, and never show them the dark twisted things you actually like to draw. At least that's what I do. That might not work for everybody.
I know this is a joke but genuinely think about what you love about drawing hair and clothes? Is it the colors? Is it the flowy lines? You try and personalise the clothes to a character right? Try and personalise the back rounds, draw them like you make an outfit, look at reference's, experiment with different ways to make a background. As for shading, Pick a color, try shading it. Pick out the things you don't like about it. Wright down your process. Find were do you think it went wrong, play with colors and layers. Look at other's art work and pick out things you like, try to figure out how they did it. Look at other references. Practice isn't going to help of you have no direction, But i hope this helps!
@@timlovesfrogs3771 I don't like drawing hair and clothes, it's just easier than drawing complex things like eyes. I can draw backgrounds sometimes, but I can't get it to look realistic because the character ends up looking huge compared to the trees and I can't draw perspective so it looks like a kid drew it. I can't shade because I don't know where the shading's supposed to go and how much.
Hands down the most important thing I learned in art school was how to thumbnail sketch. I am a lot like you in that I get inspired and just want to draw the 1st thing that pops into my brain, but thumbnails has made that process much cleaner for me.
oof once, ONCE i showed a drawing to my father and then he wanted me to show all of mah drawings to his friends when they come over.And i begged him not to but he didnt listen . He just snatched it off me, yelled a little and showed it to his buddies and even now they make jokes about me liking to draw and stuff. In school if someone sees me drawing they just HAVE to ask "where are the eyes??", "why wont you draw the legs", "why isn't she wearing clOthEs???" ;-;
As a person that would prefer sketching on printer paper, because I would like my sketchbook look like that calarts stuff, shoving stuff into folders sounds pretty great
a person, sorry I replied to the wrong person. (If you are wondering, someone said entrapta and hordak are together so I replied saying “REALLY?!-“ not realizing who I was replying to-)
9:46 THIS!!! This helped me so much! I've had the issue of wanting to draw but feeling completely burnt out, and I had no clue why. I wasn't drawing very often, how could I be burnt out already? That tip made me realize it was because I haven't picked up any new inspiration sources in months. Thank you so much!!
Doubt you'll read this, but I just wanted to thank you. Your "do this, not that" series inspired me to no end, so much so that I'm still drawing years later. So thanks for getting me into drawing in the first place, and for videos that always make me feel better for watching them. I'm glad you have such a platform and I hope you keep inspiring people for your job as long as you wish.
Oof-that “explore the ideas” thing doesn’t work for me. RIP to having a weirdly functioning brain. I can’t do thumbnails. They make no sense. I just look at poses and decide who to draw lol but I don’t wanna be professional so who cares? It’s a fun hobby.
As an experienced artist myself, you don’t have to explore ideas every single time you draw something. If you just want to work on a fun pose, don’t worry too much about thumbnails or planning. This advice is only for people approaching an ambitious project that requires a lot of thought or else it could be detrimental to you later on (e.g. a 10+ hour painting, a comic page, a commissioned illustration that needs certain details, etc.) But it’s also useful if you find yourself working on something for too long and it’s just not coming together; it means you didn’t fully explore more efficient ways of drawing the thing you’re currently working on. It’s a nice exercise to do if you find yourself getting stuck a lot or abandoning your drawings frequently.
CatCactus That is helpful to hear. I guess my way of planning things out is mostly just imagining different scenes and scripting stuff out if I want to potentially draw comics. I just don’t thumbnail individual drawings since I usually have a clear idea of what I want to do or have looked up reference pictures to get some ideas.
Having a secret sketch book honestly really helped me. I would end up skipping out on drawing something I wanted to draw because I was worried someone might see it and I was too scared of messing up that I just didn't draw it. It's honestly so freeing to have a sketch book I can put as much bad art and fan art into without it ever seeing the light of day again.
“Use your favorites to boost your weaknesses” is such a good piece of advice. I hated doing backgrounds when drawing my characters and so I decided to make creating believable spaces for my senior year of art my focus. It was a fun challenge because I used my two favorite characters to base the surroundings on (they’re the main characters of a graphic novel I’ve been working on) I did a total of 6 paintings/drawings and tackled a specific part of the background to just keep things fresh and with the last _complete_ drawing, I used all of the lessons I had learned from the previous pieces to create the one drawing I am most proud of. Looking back at the first and last “picture book” paintings (that’s what my teacher and I called the non-comic pages) makes me feel so good about what I achieved in just 7 months It also made me realize that I’m actually capable of doing things on my own and motivating myself. It also made me realize how much I love those two characters and pushed me even further to wrote their story
@@Mandy.8522 don't worry i have 3 layers for hair 7 for eyes (each eye) and more then 10 for cloths that's not even foe the background and random stuff or if theirs more then one charictar

I don't know much about you at all, but what I do know is that you are absolutely amazing. You're doing great today. You don't need to be perfect, you're already doing your best. You're probably going through a lot right now, and that's understandable. The world is breaking, I know, but you can do this. You've been doing really well lately! You can make it, I promise. You're gonna be okay. Everything is gonna be okay. Take a deep breath, go make yourself a hot cup of coffee, or some hot chocolate, or maybe even some tea. Grab a book, or look something up to read. Give yourself a break, you deserve it. It doesn't make you selfish to have some alone time, if anything it makes you less selfish. Take care of yourself, because you matter. Everything is gonna be fine. Take a warm bath, read a book, make yourself a good meal, and remember that you matter. If you're an artist, your art is absolutely beautiful. Keep going! If you're a musician, you're music sounds amazing! If you're a writer, the things you write are absolutely wonderful! If you're an editor (pictures, videos, ect.), your edits are awesome! If you're any other kind of creator, your creations are great! If you do something outside of art, it's still amazing! You're doing great, I promise! Best art advise I got is that you can't just sit there and complain that your bad at art without acting upon what you think your bad at and try to improve on it it's helped me lot with motivation and made me realize that hey... Instead of just saying bad which is incredibly vague and overly just a wrong form of self observation you should question yourself on what you think your bad at and improve upon those aspects. That's just helped me quite a bit because yeah at the end of the day it's helped my big time with working on my flaws and well I have expanded outwards in my art because of thinking instead of me just being bad I think what do I think I'm bad at what's the specific thing that I feel I'm weak at. Ik this was just me sharing what really made me pop off and love art I've been doing it seriously as a hobby ever since I understood that info hope it helps some who the whole I'm not good enough issue.
True. Whenever I make a drawing I'm not satisfied with there's always a chance that I'll end up remaking it until I think it's decent enough to show anyone
I'm glad that you're here to help everyone learn, I personally kinda suck (okay it never looks very good when I draw) and I wish I could be better, but I don't really know what to do. Sometimes however I come up with little concepts, and after this I kinda like... Doodled I guess? Idk what to call it, I started drawing with no real idea in mind and ended up coming up with some more story ideas, I just wish I could do art to make it better. I still thank you though, because you have helped quite a lot of people and you have also inspired me, even if I know my art will always fail, I know my imagination picks up where my drawing fails.

It ends up connecting with a wider variety of audiences especially if it the piece is a little more left to interpretation. Just thought I might share some things that help me create.

Me: use hair and clothes to improve backgrounds and shading?
Do y’all do it on purpose or do you seriously don’t understand what she means by that?
@@literallygaston2489 It's a joke about how that doesn't always work when you have more specific strengths than "people".
RzultaMorda well the advice doesn’t really work for people with different strengths now does it
I know this is a joke but genuinely think about what you love about drawing hair and clothes?
Hehe I used to want to just be a hobbyist but now I'm looking into getting expensive tablets, starting a TH-cam career and art school
I mean, if you don't want to improve then enjoy what your doing! If it's just a hobby then just have fun.

Looking back at the first and last “picture book” paintings (that’s what my teacher and I called the non-comic pages) makes me feel so good about what I achieved in just 7 months
It also made me realize that I’m actually capable of doing things on my own and motivating myself. It also made me realize how much I love those two characters and pushed me even further to wrote their story
