Great video. Always wondered how the AMD Ryzen's performed. The Ryzen's typically track the Intel processors by the number (i3...Ryzen 3, i5...Ryzen 5). The key component is the GPU and making sure you have a PSU (Power Supply Unit) to support that baby because it takes a bunch of power. For US buyers, you can also try and get used DELL i5 computers on ebay or craig's list and refit them with a new PSU and graphics card to really get the cost down. Just be sure you have sufficient space inside the case to allow for the graphics card to fit. Some cases come in SSF (small form factor) and won't accomodate a good graphics card.
Nice work .. I built my own pc back in May. not for skytrak specifically but it was a project I wanted to do for myself. You hit the nail on the head with the advice and the sites. It sounds way harder to do than it actually is. As long as you get the appropriate compatible parts, you should have no issues. Great work, and glad to see your golf simulator room upgrades as you do them. keep up the great vids
Nice one mate, I’ve built loads of PCs but a long time ago - didn’t know about the benchmark website or the part picker site though! Will use them next time 👍🏼
@@hcpgolf All good really. I did a ton of research of my own and could not be happier going from an iPad Pro to Lenovo Legion (Cyber Monday deal was hot). I have watched a bunch of your videos in my simulator journey and found them all very helpful so thank you for that.
Since I was unable to build thx for the specs very informative as always. Right now BJs Wholesale (US) has a Acer Nitro 5 laptop for $649... specs: 9th gen i5-9300H(up to 4.1GHz), 15.6” full HD IPS Display, memory 8G, , NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650, w/4G, 512GB SSD, are some main specs.
Quality mate. Can you do a video on all things skytrak software. What you get, what’s free what’s not etc. Looking at getting one but don’t know how much it costs after you’ve bought it. 👍
Mitch have you done a more recent video on this? I came across this it is pretty old. Please point to what you may have done since! I am looking tomupgrade from an iPad with all the new sim software upgrades coming out. Would be very happy with 1080p in ultra. Anything you have is appreciated. Love your content!
Glad it worked, despite a lot of missed considerations like USB ports, Bluetooth connections, Ethernet connections, WiFi compatibilities, Windows 10 version, keyboard and mouse connections, HDMI ports, sound cards, temperature control, ventilation, dust filters, display connections, electrostatic discharge during build process. Seems like a beginner just hit a 170 yd hole in one. What are your thoughts on part guarantees and technical support if something does not work? You definitely covered most issues in your initial considerations, and it did work when you switched it on. So well played.
There’s a lot of technical information in there Ian that would baffle a lot of people. I just wanted to simplify it to anyone who is interested so they could build a workable PC for as cheap as possible 👍🏼
@@hcpgolf That was only the basic external stuff. When you think that teams of experts from Asus, Lenovo, HP and Dell take six months to design and test a PC before moving to manufacturing, one has to ask why would anyone think it's OK to use a couple of web sites to build a PC in two weeks? Clearly it can be done - and has been done by many people, and you have successfully covered a lot of the basic issues. But you did find that one of the HDMI ports did not work on the motherboard. Might there be other issues? And who will help you address those issues if they become critical. A DIY computer is a high risk project. that will leave a lot of perplexity if something does not work as expected in the launch monitor, PC, software, projector chain. I've worked in PCs since 1977 and I would definitely not try a DIY computer project.
I’ve used these same websites and built a SFF computer built into a “DAN case”’ or my first ever built and it was easy. Works great. No issues. It isn’t that hard. If you have any questions, the answer is on TH-cam. “High risk project….” Please.
Thanks mate for this info. Gona make my simulator build much cheaper, top man…. If you’re ever in Spain, (Valencia) let’s get out for a game. Cheers… 🍻

Great video man, when you are running this on Ultra settings is that with 1080p? If so what what are you getting for FPS? Also can this computer do ultra on 1440p?
Thanks. yes I am running it at 1080p. I am not sure what FPS I am getting. I can try and find out and will let you know if I do. I am sure this computer would be able to do ultra at 1440p 👍🏼 sorry I can’t be more helpful!
Hi Mitch- was exploring laptops to upgrade my sim but decided to go the PC route instead. PCs run much more efficiently I’m learning. And I like the idea of being able to upgrade down the road. I’m hoping to get a decent card at 3080 to ensure I can run GSPRO. Now that you’ve been playing w GSPro on sky track (loved that video too) - are you using that with this computer? Are you running on ultra? Any thoughts or recommendations? Thx as always Cheers Michael
Hi mate. I am using GSPro with this same computer and it works fine on ultra settings. I haven’t tried reducing the graphics to high/very high yet to see if it makes any difference in terms of smoothness. But I played my first round the other night and it worked great on ultra. If you get a 3080 I don’t think you’ll have anything to worry about 👍🏼
Yes absolutely, whatever works better for your setup. The only benefit of a desktop is that you can upgrade parts in the future rather than having to upgrade a whole laptop. Apart from that then theres no real difference!
Maybe just an extra HDMI output because I didnt realise the HDMI that is built into the motherboard doesnt actually work. So I only have 1 working HDMI but it doesn't matter because I use a different output on the graphics card, would just be for convenience thats all.
I would most definitely avoid building a DIY laptop. Major laptop issue is dissipation of heat through well designed ventilation paths. It may be possible to find a pre-designed laptop in kit form, but you cannot build a laptop to Mitch's PC specifications. All the components are for big cases, you'd have to start the component selection from scratch.
Hi Mitch, all great info thanks. As this video was based about a year ago & you now use GS Pro, as well as other software packages, would you still recommend the same or similar graphics card etc. I have recently purchased the Mevo + so not sure if this makes a difference to using Skytrak. I’m just building my sim at the moment & using the free E6 package that came with it but would like to use GS Pro or GC2019 in the future. Thanks for any advise you can offer. Cheers Neil 🍻
Hi Neil, thanks for the comment. This graphics card is what I still use now for playing GSPro. It works fine on ‘high’ settings and I get a decent frame rate. When I set it to very high of ultra high then I get some stutter on the newly built courses. I will likely upgrade my graphics card at some point in the future 👍🏼
This computer is fine for 1080p, but this is not for 4k builds. The recommended 3.2 GHz is not the whole story, you need to take the threads, cache, and cores into consideration. The Ryzen 5 2600 is a perfect cpu for a 1080p build. The video cards you discussed are 1080p cards. Even the recommended cards for 4k GTX 1080 would struggle at 4K. Running ultra settings on 1080p can't be compared to running 1440p. I build computers and deal with components. I am sorry, but this is bad advice for people if they plan on building a 4k gaming computer. Absolute minimum if going with a Ryzen build I would recommend a Ryzen 5 3600x with a RTX 2080 Ti. The system above is perfect for 1080p only.
Fair point for those wanting a 4K build. As I mention in the video I know very little about building computers. I was more than happy with 1080 as that is all my projector can manage.
Hi there mitch. Would you recommend getting a pc and buying the tgc 2019 package? WGT on Skytrak is awful so just wondering is tgc much better? Multi-player is a massive plus. @@hcpgolf ah yes mitch, you are right. The graphics card is a Radeon RX 560X. Thanks for the advice. I'm gonna get tgc so, will help when the dark evenings are upon us!

If it compares well then go for that laptop. You may need a more powerful graphics card though. Hope it works out for you and enjoy TGC 2019!
Yes, the cpu fan it comes with is more than adequate for running this type of build.. you can also purchase case fans for really cheap if you want more ventilation in the case. You can get fancy and get rgb ones (with the lights) but it's more for show or looks than anything. Adding an additional fan or two will keep the flow of air moving and the inside of the case cool
Yes it appears the 1650 super graphics card has now gone much more expensive. I believe that graphics cards often fluctuate in price depending on how popular they are. All i could suggest (being a novice at computer builds) is to browse the user benchmark and pcpartpicker websites to compare similar graphics cards to the 1060 recommended for TGC 2019 and choose one that will perform the same or better for a more reasonable price!
Hi Mitch, I'm trying to get a laptop to use with TGC if says that I will need NVidia GTX 670 or AMD 7850, on Userbench the GTX 670 is hugely better spec than the 7850, trying to get a laptop less than £400 is near impossible to match the GTX 670, but ok if your compare specs with with laptops on Ebay to the 7850, what GPU would you suggest. thanks Gary
