Then the vines made the hives look like silly euro [ ]'s in daft matching suits ... Plus it's simple! The hives were the support, the vines headlined!
@Christopher Bingham It's not just changing tastes, IMO. Being in a rock band isn't economically feasible any more: buying and transporting gear, finding a place to rehearse, finding a venue to play, promotion... and that's all on top of finding other musicians of comparable talent who want to dedicate their time and effort to all of that with you. And thanks to the recession, all of this is WAY more expensive, meaning it's a full time job right off the bat; the reason niche rock music pop punk and emo can still exist is because those bands don't have to spend as much precious time trying to find out what kind of music they're playing or who their audience is. And all of this is ON TOP of changing tastes. On top of all of this, artists don't wait until it's economically feasible to create something, so if all they have is a synth, a laptop and a couple of mics in their bedroom, they're gonna make music with a synth, a laptop and a couple of mics in their bedroom. And if they can't find a gig to play it live (assuming they even have the skills to play it live; being an artist is not the same as being a performer), there's nothing to stop them from sharing it over the internet, cuz by god they made something, and they wanna show it off! And assuming you have easy access to all of the things that it take to be in a rock band, let alone a good one, you're gonna come off as a show-off elitist to the many, many, MANY people who don't. Long story somewhat shorter: it's not just trends. It's our god-awful economy (thanks Bush).
Honestly, I liked both bands. While it's a competition I think both bands did well, although the hives are notoriously great at live performances so the vines had a lot to compete against.
The Hives were the most developed and polished of all THE bands pre dating the Stripes, Strokes, and Vines. Their demo in 1994 and 1st album in 1997. A punk band those years.
The Hives was the best concert I’ve ever seen. I actually met Howlin’ Pelle and his brother Nicholaus Arson and they were both very genuine and fun to talk to.

I was there. At the time I was sharing an apartment in Donnybrook, Dublin with my business partner and his girlfriend Lorraine (who happened to be Bono’s niece). We were going to be in New York anyway for work and, because Lorraine’s uncle didn’t fancy going to the VMAs that year, he offered us his tickets.
