Great video! Never saw the vines live, but I've heard horror stories from friends regarding erratic behavior from Craig (this was during the highly evolved tour in Chicago). It's too bad since highly evolved, winning days and vision Valley are all great albums I still enjoy to this day
their first album is still an excellent one, it's really a shame that they couldn't keep it together. Craig always struck me as a guy who really loved the art of music but due to personal reasons was never really cut out for the "rock star" thing. Too much too fast sort of situation.
looking back, this shit is lit. because of the vines I've started to become more eager to become a musician and play for people. The Vines had the exact piece of the puzzle I was missing for my future, chasing the rock dream became a thing because of them and I'd love to hear them play once before they disappear. If not, I want to carry what they held in my future music career because their style resonated with mine. That's the one thing I want to do every day, because The Vines made it fun to sing and play on stage.
Are there any bands in Australia that label themselves "Grunge"?. Don't get me wrong, there were some awesome aussie bands I listened to in the mid to late 90's that had the Grunge sound (By that, I mean the Sludge rock type thing. Nirvana, Mudhoney ect). But back then "Grunge" was kind of relegated to the "Seattle" Bands of the time. And even then, it was kind of looked at skepticism if you were calling yourself "Grunge". That being said, I couldn't really care what "genre" bands find a correlation to. To be honest, in 2021, if some came out and said "Listen to this band. They're a great Grunge band", at least there would be a more defining ideation in my head that would make me check it out. Definitely less broad than "Alternative". And the bands you mentioned are bloody good, too. You got good taste...
I remember seeing one of my favorite (lesser known/indie/whatever) bands performing in the video. I had to record it on vhs at the time and rewinding a few times to rewatch and confirm it was them..I was like HOLY SHIT! 😂😂 Killradio - awesome California punk rock band that much to my delight reunited !

@@robwalsh9843 yeah, I remember that interview too. At the Drive In were great! I Always dug a lot of their stuff but by no means they weren’t something i would call “the saviors of Rock” but they were definitely better than certain bands around the time they came out lol
Can you do a story on a band that came so so close to hitting. The band was called Stranger band. They had a major following in the south. This band was red hot. They signed a contract and went out to L.A. where the management or the record industry wouldn’t take them any further. In Florida/Georgia back in the 80’s and early 90’s would open for many major bans that toured the south. In smaller venues they sold the place out everywhere. They were a blues rock band that had a Van Halen meets STV feel. Then in the mid 90’s they broke up and the guitarist blew his brains out over it. I swear back then a truly fun night was getting to see them live ANYWHERE!!! I’ve seen them open for Triumph, Molly Hatchet, the Allman bros, and RUSH. Just a hands down fun band with a guitarist that just smoked out blues rock like few!
I'm a massive fan and love everything they've released, even Craig's other project White Shadows. Been a fan since I was 14 in 2002. I'm also called Craig lol. From the Uk.
Winning days was a great fucking album. Maybe the most underrated album of the early 2000's. Patrick's bass lines were instrumental to those songs. When he left, the music just wasn't as good anymore. The Vines are to me, the saddest modern rock story. I pray Craig is doing well
The Vines is one of my favorite bands. Winning Days and Wicked Nature are my favorite albums and I think the new line up since 2014 is awesome but before line up is great as well
I saw The Vines so many times.. finally I got to meet him - he is the most awkward man in the world. But I was awkward too just being in his presence. The live music is so much better than the recorded albums
I remember being 15 and being a Vines fan. When the hype came out pushing them as the new nirvana (like 25 years after Cobain) I knew even as a kid that wasn't going to play well. I had their CDs. They were nothing like nirvana.
The music journos basically lost it over the stop-start distorto blast of the "Highly Evolved" single; that's pretty much when the comparisons kicked off. Even then, it was optimistic at best.
I'm shocked this doesn't happen more often. I got a slight taste of touring after playing in bands in Melbourne.. And even the act of driving around from gigs, being in a car all that time.. While I loved music, I was honestly more happy at home playing video games.. And at first I thought I was unique, but I see so many big bands/local acts say the same thing.. they're happier with the simple life.
I saw them live with Jet after their single Get Free came out and they were absolutely horrible. Jet was the openers and blew us all away as we had no idea who they were at the time, their first single "Are You Gonn Be My Girl" would only start playing on the radio a week later but man, they brought the house down. Then The Vines came out. Slow songs, horribly out of tune, no one could understand what was being said, people were standing around, the singer at one point poured a Coke over his head for reasons unknown... Then they played Get Free, place went ape complete with a mosh pit for two minutes then it was right back to standing around like "WTF is this???" Not surprised they didn't go anywhere.
@Christopher Bingham well that’s what happened a couple of years ago, with The Vines opening for Jet in Sydney. That’s mentioned at some point in this video and I was there. A really sad show from Nicholls, so embarrassing. I came mainly for them and ended up wishing it was over soon. On the other hand, Jet delivered a great performance.
I saw them 3 times, once with Jet who was tighter and they were just ok, another time they were just horrible, Craig screamed through every song, you could tell he was in emotional turmoil, he fought with the bass player on stage. The 3rd time was after the 2nd album and they were firing on all cylinders and one of the best shows I've ever seen. The first albums was full of great songs and the guy has a great voice, he just couldn't get dialed in every night.
The song Winning Days is among their best. I love all their albums and have never really decided which one I prefer the most. My least favorites are Highly Evolved and Wicked Nature. All the others I enjoy thoroughly (but I haven't heard the latest release)
@@fripsebibs My problem with Wicked Nature is mostly the 2nd disc. The 1st disc I think is up to their standard and I really enjoy it. From Future Primitive I like everything except Riverview Avenue. Cry isn't my favorite either but I still like it. Riverview is sub-par IMO
A major reason for their demise that wasn't mentioned here is they were blacklisted from the biggest FM radio station in Australia because Craig kicked a photographer at a concert they put together. Not getting played on the radio at all can kill a bands commercial success fairly quick. I think that's why they released the song, Don't listen to the radio on vision valley. I could have some of this story wrong but that's how I remember it going down.
Always wonder what happened to this band that just disappear one day. I remember the first time I watched the video of "get free" on tv. I was blown away, they really were pretty good back then.
I listen all their album back in highschool from 06 to 09. Amazing band with very beautiful songs like winning days, autum shade 1 and 2, space station, and many many more. Its like nirvana meets beatles and pink floyd. Ride, outtaway, Great band. I love them.
I don’t recall the hype because I ignored critics back then, but man!!! Get free, ride were (wait, I still have to listen to those songs when they come over), my favs...best lead singer!!
I remember the hype around The Vines, and they were a great band to be honest. It's a shame things went the way they did. No fault of Nicholls, really, having to cope with that pressure on top of aspergers.
"The" bands were a thing well before the early 2000s, pick any decade between from the 1960s to the 1990s and you can find tons of "The" bands, including the ultimate example "The The".
What a trip to see this just get posted. I just started listening the hives again, and naturally I had to listen to the vines. I always wondered what happened, but then I started chasing the dragon on garage rock.
Love The Vines. They kill it in the studio, just too bad Craig couldn’t pull it together for live performances. They would’ve been way bigger if they had an impressive live show.
Been playing Far Cry 5 and there’s a mission called ‘Get Free’ where you hold off waves of enemies and the song is on repeat, it’s really badass! Reminded me how good their first album was, and still is! I remember watching the videos to Outta The Way & Get Free on Kerrang TV when I was a kid 🤣
I used to blow up The Vines covers at partys in México, while being a total disaster on stage (in a good sense) thank u Craig for being such a big inspiration for me at my teens...
I loved The Vines back in the day, seen them live 3 times in Glasgow and they were amazing! Think Craig's struggles made a big difference to their live TV performances and appearances, such a shame as first two albums are up there with the best of any other band of that genre and age, some of whom still see touring success

Totally. Autumn Shade II, TV Pro, Animal Machine, Evil Town. All great songs. That was a favorite album of mine for a while. And I really like “Spaceship” off the Vision Valley album.
Glad I'm not the only one. Seriously underrated.
@@nickcharles6530 hard agree with every word of this comment lol except "for awhile"
Ahh my favorite band. In Miracle Land is one of my all time favorite albums, along with Winning Days
Great video! Never saw the vines live, but I've heard horror stories from friends regarding erratic behavior from Craig (this was during the highly evolved tour in Chicago). It's too bad since highly evolved, winning days and vision Valley are all great albums I still enjoy to this day
Yes!! I’ve been waiting to hear whatever came of this band. Thanks man.
I really like this band, it's a shame that after all what happened everybody pretty much don't remember them anymore
The poor guy had mental challenges
They were/are great. Those two albums were f'in solid.
Highly Evolved is still one of the best debut albums IMO.
They just mesmerize me….still.
Craig gets me pumped watching him perform.
their first album is still an excellent one, it's really a shame that they couldn't keep it together.
Same
Highly Evolved is a masterpeace.
Grunge is still strong in Australia. Violent Soho had a lot of success a couple No. 1 gold albums. Dune Rats are great too
The Smith Street Band
Got any more. I'm interested in newish , rock bands. Looking for fresh
@@BOBANDVEG Beabadoobee, Fangclub, Soccer Mommy, The Wytches, Highly suspect, basement
I've heard tales from Mark Arm(Mudhoney, Green River)that the term "grunge" actually originated in Australia.
I still love this band. Ride was one of the coolest videos ever.
Yes the video is awesome I agree
I remember seeing one of my favorite (lesser known/indie/whatever) bands performing in the video.
I had to record it on vhs at the time and rewinding a few times to rewatch and confirm it was them..I was like HOLY SHIT! 😂😂
Killradio - awesome California punk rock band that much to my delight reunited !
videos like this will help The Vines get the credit they deserve! sweet!
I spoke with Hamish Rosser and Brad Heald after a Wolfmother show last year in Texas. They were surprised I mentioned that I enjoyed The Vines. Lol
Wow, having a magazine actually issue an apology for calling a band the Saviors of Rock 😂 yikes
Their record label Corp, music industry or whatever must of put a lot of money and marketing into them.
@@henryk9183 they absolutely had a huve financial push, that first wave as a band is so crucial. They lost their steam and so did their backers.
@@nuke97 indeed
@@nuke97 I just wonder how much justification there is for someone's mental health. It's an unfortunate situation more then anything. Especially for me, feeling this way as a fan, and their lineup was definitely best with all the original members. That first album kicked ass, second one was pretty good but...yeah It's sad.
@@wyntonexisting greatness doesn’t accept excuses.
The Vines "Winning Days" is their best album, and overall fantastic.
Literally one of my favourite bands....!!!! Vision valley is such a good album
Spaceship is so beautiful to listen
@@yatsum81 soooo underrated..!!!!
I always knew them as the guys who sang ride. That was in every car commercial in 2004-2005
YES.
Speaking of Ride, look up "Vapour Trail" by Ride. It's an incredible song.
The Vines: tailor-making music for car commercials 10 years before Imagine Dragons
Speaking of cars, the song was originally a part of Burnout 3: Takedown but was cut from the final release and was used in a trailer for one of the Blur games.
Glad to see these guys on YT, was really into them when the get free demo was out - sounded so raw !
NME was so pretentious, who gives a shit what they praised or apologized for praising. The Vines were always awesome.
It feels like any band that gets popular for the moment gets called The Saviors of Rock 😂
I remember reading in an interview with a former member of At The Drive-In who said "Once they started calling us saviors of rock, I knew we where in trouble"
i'm sure they called Greta Van Fleet saviors of rock a couple of times now, and they are always wrong.
@@irotinmyskin Yep they did! 😂
@@sstaners1234 LOL!!! Yes! Great band 🤣🤘🏻
@@robwalsh9843 yeah, I remember that interview too. At the Drive In were great! I Always dug a lot of their stuff but by no means they weren’t something i would call “the saviors of Rock” but they were definitely better than certain bands around the time they came out lol
Craig is still making great music!
Whats hes new band name?
@@delfeth He still uses the Vines name
they actually released a bunch of albums after that one and compared to most rock bands of the same era, I think they have a pretty good longevity.
Still love a bit of "homesick" when it comes on. That solo is beautiful
Love that track 👌
I love The Vines, I’m patiently waiting for Autumn Shade V
The first 3 albuns are really great albuns, so many beatiful melodies, used to listen them everyday when i was younger
was never a big fan of the vines but absolutely loved the song "winning days"
I'm a massive fan and love everything they've released, even Craig's other project White Shadows. Been a fan since I was 14 in 2002. I'm also called Craig lol. From the Uk.
Hey that's awesome man. Greetings from Canada.
Winning days was a great fucking album. Maybe the most underrated album of the early 2000's.
Patrick's bass lines were instrumental to those songs. When he left, the music just wasn't as good anymore. The Vines are to me, the saddest modern rock story. I pray Craig is doing well
I couldn't agree more. I still listen to that album all the time. It never ages.
The Vines is one of my favorite bands. Winning Days and Wicked Nature are my favorite albums and I think the new line up since 2014 is awesome but before line up is great as well
They're lesser known music is fantastic, their softer stuff, all of it. I enjoy their hits as well
I saw The Vines so many times.. finally I got to meet him - he is the most awkward man in the world. But I was awkward too just being in his presence. The live music is so much better than the recorded albums
This was extremely well done.
Thank you for making this.
I remember being really into the vines back in the day around their first and second album, so many great songs
Then they played Get Free, place went ape complete with a mosh pit for two minutes then it was right back to standing around like "WTF is this???"
Not surprised they didn't go anywhere.
@Christopher Bingham Absolutely.
LOL
"the singer at one point poured a Coke over his head for reasons unknown..."
The reason is explained in the video at about the 6 minute mark
I still love their music! And I still think that Craig is one of the cutest guys to ever walk the Earth! 😍😍😍
Amazing video! Loved the Vines!
Have you ever done a video on the band "Jawbox"? That's another great band that deserves more love. Thanks!
Love the vines, man!
For me they still being a super band 🧡
Winning Days is a masterpiece, I don't care what anyone says
Their best album
The song Winning Days is among their best. I love all their albums and have never really decided which one I prefer the most. My least favorites are Highly Evolved and Wicked Nature. All the others I enjoy thoroughly (but I haven't heard the latest release)
@@mikebyj2310 please tell me. You like future primitive more then Wicked Nature?
@@fripsebibs My problem with Wicked Nature is mostly the 2nd disc. The 1st disc I think is up to their standard and I really enjoy it.
From Future Primitive I like everything except Riverview Avenue. Cry isn't my favorite either but I still like it. Riverview is sub-par IMO
@@mikebyj2310 lol "riverview avenue" haha. loves it. so craig..
They were the coolest of the “The” bands. Still ham to them this day.
I still occasionally listen to the Vines, I remember seeing them on TV as a kid
The vines is my fav band of all time
A major reason for their demise that wasn't mentioned here is they were blacklisted from the biggest FM radio station in Australia because Craig kicked a photographer at a concert they put together. Not getting played on the radio at all can kill a bands commercial success fairly quick. I think that's why they released the song, Don't listen to the radio on vision valley. I could have some of this story wrong but that's how I remember it going down.
People need to wake the fuck up and listen to this band again.
For the record: What Grohl said is not necessarily an insult.
That's what I thought too. Its not like nirvana songs were super challenging either.
I love them.
he doesnt want the spotlight the last two albums have had no videos or anything hes just making awesome music
Imo The Vines are just as good the Foo Fighters, if not better.
Finally!!! A video about one of my favorite bands, I bought their first three albums, Vission Valley is by far my favorite
You should do a video about the hives. Awesome rock band.
Better than the Vines thats for sure
Better than everyone
Those sharp dressed men!!! The "Hate to Say I Told You So" inspired me to start playing bass. Awesome group!!!
Or the "Hines" or "Vives" !
I concur!!
Yes they were overhyped but they still were a great band.
I don’t recall the hype because I ignored critics back then, but man!!! Get free, ride were (wait, I still have to listen to those songs when they come over), my favs...best lead singer!!
@@ndowroccus4168 "Spaceship” and “Winning Days” would be my faves from them.
I remember the hype around The Vines, and they were a great band to be honest. It's a shame things went the way they did. No fault of Nicholls, really, having to cope with that pressure on top of aspergers.
Remember the “The” bands of the early 2000s?
I really liked The Sums.
The Hives, The Strokes, The Killers, The White Stripes
@@pauliewalnuts829 Boring crap
@@jockmctodger I actually agree with you. I was just naming them.
"The" bands were a thing well before the early 2000s, pick any decade between from the 1960s to the 1990s and you can find tons of "The" bands, including the ultimate example "The The".
I still listen to Winning Days weekly.
What a trip to see this just get posted. I just started listening the hives again, and naturally I had to listen to the vines. I always wondered what happened, but then I started chasing the dragon on garage rock.
im still in love with them!
Can’t believe Dave would say that, he’s always so nice. Something in their song must’ve bugged him, maybe their similarity to nirvana?
Love The Vines. They kill it in the studio, just too bad Craig couldn’t pull it together for live performances. They would’ve been way bigger if they had an impressive live show.
1st album was great but i also like Vision Valley, especially last track: Spaceship.
Vision Valley is a fantastic album! Wayne Connolly's production was legit. Great sounds/songs.
Been playing Far Cry 5 and there’s a mission called ‘Get Free’ where you hold off waves of enemies and the song is on repeat, it’s really badass! Reminded me how good their first album was, and still is! I remember watching the videos to Outta The Way & Get Free on Kerrang TV when I was a kid 🤣
fuck man i gotta play that xDDD
I was such a big fan I loved every single album they put out, first time I heard them was in a car game called Flatout 2 back in 2007 ;)
I used to blow up The Vines covers at partys in México, while being a total disaster on stage (in a good sense) thank u Craig for being such a big inspiration for me at my teens...
The Vines are a cool band, and also silverchair 💗 I just want 'em to play again 😩 (both Australian rock bands)
The Vines is my all time fav band. i've read every article that exists and i can confirm that in this video is way too much false information...
List the mistakes please for posterity
Or make a video about it ;) I'm curious for your pov
I loved The Vines back in the day, seen them live 3 times in Glasgow and they were amazing! Think Craig's struggles made a big difference to their live TV performances and appearances, such a shame as first two albums are up there with the best of any other band of that genre and age, some of whom still see touring success
That makes so much sense! I always wondered what happened to them.
It's a tough industry.
