  • The good, bad, and the ugly of sway bar disconnects. Greater articulation, smoother ride on rough roads, more body roll, and open heim joint maintenance.
    Swaybars limit our suspension's ability to articulate. We've been using these custom quick disconnects on our FJ Cruiser for over five years. In this long term review video I'll be telling you the good, the bad, and the ugly. Then, what our experience has been with them. Are they worth it?

    A video clip to show articulation with them connected va disconnected will be great (same obstacles and line)

    thanks. so it seems that if you don't have significant highway driving then there is little downside except the regular maintenance and noise. an excellent presentation.

    I got a set from overland customs over a year ago because of your other video. I put the work in to make sure they were aimed as best as possible and tested the travel. The lower nut came loose with locktite. I drilled through and ran a cotter pin on the nut and then both lower heims died fast.
    I was gonna do something with high misalignment spacers but never got to it. 650lb springs, digressive shocks, progressive bump stops, and she rides great with no front sway bar.
    Funny what you said about long trips heating things up because where I live I need to drive 3.5hrs at least to do any real off road.

    Thanks for the good info. I'd drill a hole for the clip to secure the aluminum collar at the top when "disconnected". Maybe add a slim rubber bushing at the points the joint contacts and that should cancel out the noise and mushrooming.

    The new Bronco has a disconnecting front sway bar, so I know it can be done with IFS vehicles. It would be cool if someone developed a true disconnect kit for Toyotas.

    About a year ago I installed them on my 5th Gen 4R and regardless of the Loctite and proper torque, the nuts always loosened, both on the swaybar and the Heim Joint end. I had to retorque them every week, sometimes more frequently. I liked them off-roading but I couldn't trust them, so they're sitting in my cabinet.

    If it's literally once a week, could run some grease lines to them so there's no going underneath? Definitely not *totally* developed but a great concept been following since your original OCD video about these and was looking again. Thanks for the update! I will design my own or just ditch the front sway. I took it off my 4G never had any issues with stability. Body lean in high wind was about it. Handled super well offroad, semi high speed snow/fireroads etc it was a monster. Had some front tire traction on a few corners that would have made me mad if I was running for time but otherwise great. Definitely true with magnifying the dampers real capabilities.

    Pretty cool. Love the guy on the forum... there is tons of that out there. Lack of maintenance, then go online and slag the company. But I gotta say, if I had to have those, that clunking would drive me nuts ... I drive a Cherokee (xj) so I'd constantly think something is breaking. That said, I too disconnected my sway bar one time out and never put it back on (front and rear).

    I think you could solve several of those problems with a little product development. Some of that looks more like a prototype than a market product.A good, but expensive solution would be the three piece disconnectable bars which use a locking hub. A center disconnect system would be pretty cool.

      We've thought about adapting a, dare I say, Jeep disconnect. Like you said, it's expensive. Hopefully someday someone will.

    Nissan xterra and frontier community we eliminate those front and rear swaybars. To compensate the bodyroll we installed stiffer coilovers and springs.

    Thanks for the long term review. I hate to ask. Do you have the part number on those heim joints. Looks like a fun diy project since the company doesn't make many sets.

    I gotta say that aluminum mushrooming from wear isn't the best.. maybe those pieces should be stainless ? which is slightly softer but more durable than hard steel. I'd love to see these perfected ! Id be in for the maint. if that happened. I'd also be in for the electric unlock disconnect type that Jeep uses in the Rubicon series.

    I made my own for my GX470 after reading about someone making these for a Tacoma. Twice the upper heim that bolts to the spindle failed with very little use (on and off road). The inner race pushed through the body. I wish I could remember the brand of the heim, I do remember they were made in America and were supposed to be high quality. Both times it destroyed the cv boot. I gave up after the second time. I really like the concept but, for me it didn't work. I'm honestly shocked you've never had a heim failure.

    Had a pair of these on my fj, adjusted them, kept maintaining them, and got sick of the noise and rubbing on other suspension components when disconnected, so I just took my sway bar off on a trail in the sierras back country, and never looked back. 😅 As always thank guys for great content, can’t wait to see what 2023 will bring us!

    • @WanderlostOverland
      @WanderlostOverland  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to hear that they were rubbing. Ours haven't done that at all. I'm guessing you had a set with the slightly longer rods. We started with them, found there was a clearance problem, the maker changed to a shorter one.

    Thanks for your video. Custom sway bar disconnect sounds amazing. On sway bar disconnect, people are saying it is fantastic off-road, but I don't clearly understand what type of off-road they are referring to. It seems most likely they are referring to slow speed like less than 25mph or rock crawling. However, here you say sway bar disconnected on corrugated roads are fantastic. This sounds interesting. I live in a country and drive through natural gravel roads, corrugations, ups and downs, small rocks, turns, etc... I want to drive fast on these roads say more than 40mph. Would you recommend removing the front sway bar? It seems all people agree on one thing, that is it is not good on highway on fast speed like you say 80 mph... I wonder if it is not safe on 80 mph on highway, it can't be safe on earth roads 40 mph..

    For FJ’s I sometimes think it would be a good idea to eliminate front sway- bar and just run a stiffer than stock rear bar (to make up for no front). The rear is easily discontinued for off road use.

      Can always get a lighter rate bar with hd links

  • @bobac1083
    @bobac1083 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Another solution is to run the OEM links until you want to go offroading, swap them out, go wheeling, come back home and swap them out again to minimize ware and tear on them. I know its a pain but that's probley what I would do since I only go like once to twice a month.....

    Hey quick question so I live in Utah and I'm getting ready to go to Moab for Jeep Safari it's three hours away where I live, so I just purchase the sway bar links ,,, so what do you recommend,,,put them on and and drive 3 hours or wait until I get there to put them on????

      Put them on now, just lube them before you go, when you get there, on your way home.

    Does it need to be lubed weekly too if the car doesn’t get driven for weeks at a time? And if the rod is rusted, I assume can just take some sand paper to remove it? 🤔

    By switching from the push pin to a cotter key (you called an S-clip), you lost significant strength. Make sure you replace the cotter keys once in a while.

    Okay I have been following you guys about 5 years now, I have a 2007 FJ (185,000) miles on her and my dash warning lights just popped on flashing a o2 sensor code, I just replaced my PCV Valve for the first time after watching your video ,thank you for the heads up ,so now I have the O2 sensor thing happening, any chance you are doing a video on replacing those soon? Any advice would help, cuz you guys speak normal folk language not all this technical shit everybody else does, p.s anything new on the mini bike adventure? Yes I am one of those viewers that care about that. Haha. Take care.
