      He was remembered, just not when he was around. Remember how when ganondorf re-appeared, the people of hyrule were praying for him to return to defeat him again, but he couldn't because he was sent back in time. Today, my best friend passed away. He was well known for his Link cosplay; he had been battling cancer for years and the Lord took him home. I played this for him just before he passed; his journey in this life was over and I thought that his journey should end in a poetic fashion. His favorite game was, "Ocarina of Time".

    I’m 17 now. Same age as Link was at the end of this game. If OOT has one reason to resonate with me, it’s cause this game taught me that time MOVES VERY FAST, and you’ll get older real quick. And it gets really scary. But this game has helped me learn that. I remember 7 years ago vividly. Just like it flashed like it did in this game. That is a huge reason why this is among my favorite games of all time.

  • @billny33
    @billny33 3 ปีที่แล้ว +365

    This ending music just reminds me of how well this game broke your heart beautifully. It was a seven-layer cake of bittersweet heartbreak.
    - Zelda: "Link, give the Ocarina to me." She puts her hand on his. Never has an N64 polygon NPC looked so deeply sad as she explains she must send Link back to regain his lost years as a child. And then, she plays those notes. And he's gone. If there was love there, it will never be.
    - The glorious festival of all the game's NPC's with old rivalries budding into new friendships, but no Link to enjoy his victory.
    - The Six Sages looking down on the festival in spirit form. They did it, they won. They're also most likely dead in spirit form. Bittersweet.
    - The credits scene landscapes reminding you just how breathtaking every environment truly is
    - Child Link going back to the Temple of Time and, what's this...Navi? No, why would you leave me now? Navi is gone forever as she escapes via the high window
    - Child Link still goes and puts back the Master Sword forever sealing his fate as a child, but he sure walks away like a boss while the church bells ring. That's a lump and a half in your throat right there
    - Post-Post-credits scene of Child Link first entering the castle garden and seeing Zelda. Their eyes meet. Time stops. You remember that moment from your early playthrough. The final Nintendo stamp shows up, and that godforsaken Zelda's Lullaby plays one last time, cutting up all sorts of onions in its trail. Then it stops and you are left with nothing but silence and silhouette.

    • @rhamieljoseph9775
      @rhamieljoseph9775 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      I always think about both sides of the story while listening to the first two parts of this credit sequence. To me, first as Zelda's Lullaby plays it's a moment to take in all the all the weight of the journey, how what started as a childish plan to prevent chaos turned into 7 years of turmoil that Link and Zelda would have to bear witness to. Even though the plan actually succeeded and evil was vanquished, the cost comes to Link who has lost his innocence and childhood now trapped in a world of peace that he likely feels separate from. Navi is the only person who truely shared Link's experience,and after she leaves Link no doubt feels completely alone. I think this ties in beautifully with the themes and story of Majora's Mask too.
      On the flip side, the bonfire takes place in the future time after Ganon has been defeated. Zelda has likely spread the word of Gandorf's demise and so everyone has gathered to tell the tale of the hero Link. I think of the music as as this Legend being recounted by all the people of Hyrule. Link, a boy from the forest , protector of the Hyrule citizens, brother to all Gorons, love of the Zora princess, Malon's knight in shining armor, a warrior worthy of the Gerudo, truely, the Hero of Time.
      This ending hit so hard, and when I first beat the game when I was little I don't think I understood but I know I felt it. I mean, the feeling you get of great emotional depth and sorrow with Majora's Mask is all here in this game. Majora's Mask is pretty much the story of Link just learning to cope with all of the events in Ocarina of Time. I really do believe that both games deserve to be considered masterpieces of their time, I would actually love a more in depth retelling of both their stories. All of the background and subtext seems so beautifully crafted to me now, and I think there will never be a Zelda game that can hit the same mark as they did so perfectly.

    • @billny33
      @billny33 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@rhamieljoseph9775 love your narrative here. Great perspective. One thing about the ending I always questioned though was the idea that Link likely feels seperate from the future timeline because he lost those 7 years. I feel like Link had no say in that and Zelda decided it for him. In the game, you spend much more time as adult link than child link. And you see the cause and effect of Ganondorf taking advantage of you opening the temple of time before that 7 year warp, so you understand why all this happened, you grow into your new role as a man and save the day. Maybe by then you feel you do belong in that world, but it got stripped from you by someone who decided otherwise. Link should have been able to make that choice himself.

      Idk I prefer the intro, it in a few seconds sets the tone for the whole song and the ending. It's a victorious version of the main score but it's tinged in sadness, hopeful yet heartbroken. Then the dialogue hits and you realize that while you've won, link has lost, everything. Everyone who knew who he was who knew he saved them is gone (baring the close relatives of the sages lost).
      The score tells a recap of the whole story in a brief few seconds. And that's why I think it's amazing.
      Another song that does this well is,
      "For the dark soul"
      It's a song that shows you the theme of the game it's presented in in the first few seconds of the song then changes it before circling back.
      While these songs contrast (one being about moving on even after losing everything and making a life for yourself even after loss and the other being about maddening cycles)
      They both capture their stories theme well, these composers are geniuses and I don't think they get enough credit for how well they make scores in come games.

    Yeah this one track is so beautiful and yet so sad cause you realize for the first time that the great adventure that you lived through is actually ending here.
    I was pretty much depressed from the fact that my beloved video game actually ends at some point.
    Replaying a Zelda game is still a good experience but it will never be the same as when you played it for the first time.
    Then Majoras Mask came out and i was a happy little boy again, hehe.
    And some time later i found out there are more video game franchises which are also great in their own way.

  • @hbaabes
    @hbaabes 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Played the game in early 2000s on the N64. Was 7 years old at the time and I was stuck in Dodongo's Cavern for weeks and weeks. I thought I might have missed something and I need a new save file. Kept replaying the game many times and get as many heart pieces as I could. I got my hearts to 7 which is equivalent to my age at the time. Went to biggoron and he said the sword gonna take 7 years to finish. My english was bad back then since it is not my first language. I thought biggoron was telling me that I am 7 years old and I need to grow up first.
    Couple years later, N64 broke and I never could continue playing the game. Years later, 3DS was announced and OOT 3D was announced few months after. I never felt that excited for a game before and knowing my childhood game coming to a handheld in better graphics was mind blowing to me.
    The year 2011, I am now 13 years old and finally ready to replay the game. I reached my nightmare, Dodongo's Cavern. With my better english language, I can now understand any text I read in the game. I saw a stone tablet on dodongo's cavern that told me to drop bombs into the eyes. I have finally progressed further than the 7 years old self. I became adult link finally after years and it felt like I grew along with link. I got all medallions, went to ganondorf, and I have finally beaten the villian that I kept seeing in zelda's window.
    This music played and I never felt the same in any other game I played so far. Zelda OOT might be called overrated, but was truly a masterpiece back then. Thank you for all the good memories

    Its over. But you still live in me. I feel the nostalgia, the memories. The sadness, the happiness, the pain, the joy, the knowing and not knowing, the beginning to the end. The strength and weaknesses this song can bring out moving through its melody and beats. I feel a part of my childhood has died but yet I can remember a lot about my childhood and brother before his time passed. It invokes a large amount of feelings. Euphoria mixed with sadness, a feeling i cannot find a word to describe, where the feelings are beautifully painful and have a swell blending to make me be happy for the time we spent together but sad we cannot replay this and visit eachother anymore.

    Each of the most beloved Zelda stories have a major element of tragedy in them.
    In Link's Awakening, the world you explored and came to cherish was revealed to only be a dream of the Wind Fish.
    In Twilight Princess, you have to say goodbye to Midna once the curse Zant put upon her is broken and she must return to her Twilight Realm.
    In Wind Waker, Link, Tetra, and the King have to let go of Hyrule as it is swallowed up in an all-consuming flood to stop Ganondorf from claiming it for himself with the Triforce.
    And in Ocarina of Time, your heroic actions as the Hero of Time will be only be known in the adult timeline. Link goes back to being a child and as a hylian loses his fairy companion Navi with the completion of her task.

    A couple days ago, I finally beat Ocarina of Time 3d for the 3ds. It may not seem that important to some people but to me it's extremely special because of the way the universe always has some thematic similarities. I started to play it 6-8 years ago and I remember I went to florida while playing it and got as far as the water temple. The last memory of it being whenever I was facing against dark link in the water temple. I remember winning and then losing to the boss. I never got past that as I had lost my 3ds in disney world. Recently, I had the opportunity to start over again. To finally finish the quest that I couldn't complete as a child, and when I saw the credits roll I started to cry. I love this game man...

    Now here I am, 20 years later, still struggling to figure things out. I don't think any of us ever feel like we are truly in control, and if we do we are lying to ourselves.
    It made me realize that I'm still a kid inside, as if I pulled the master sword out of the pedestal & warped forward in time. Just like link did.
