    Brilliant tutorial, in my early days 1982 as a travelling salesman we were instructed to have a piece of chip board big enough to fix a portion of the map for the area that I was working, and using coloured pins "Yellow" for an existing customer and " Blue" for a prospect you constructed your most time effective, no criss crossing journey plan. The journey planner lived on the passenger seat and was very effective until you sat on a wayward pin ha ha. In the UK as most of you know,we pronounce "Route" as "Root" and we do love good fish and chips. Cheers Steve.

    Wow what a nice simple straightforward video. Straight to the point.
    On top of the I really like your English , so pure, Cristal clear. You English made me to trust myself that I’m a good listener, I don’t have difficulties in understanding English.
    Thank you very much .

    One missing key feature is AUTO CONTINUE. I use this all the time with directions on my motorcycle to an earbud to get distraction free directions for interesting rides. My phone is put away so no distraction. But every stop I have to pull out the phone to MANUALLY SELECT CONTINUE. I have to pull out the phone to do this. Very dangerous and unnecessary. Intermediate route stops allows you to force the route to what you desire instead of what the route algorithm determines.

      I was wondering myself using first time G-Maps with additional few via points instead of my Garmin PNA as a quick solution and that the naviation stops at the first via point. I stopped nearby as possible and it needs some time to understand the cause, especially having CarPlay on my car.
      Not having auto continue is for me now the reason using G-Maps when I need only a single final target. Other Apps are available, unfortuanable not for free, you does it better. Or for IOS Apple Maps, but here selection via poinst ist als very uncomfortable. Tipping on the map on a road does not work, you need to write a real adress.

    What I always do is adding my home address (where I started) at the end of the route.
    You could also show in your tutorial that you can change the date and hour of departure, which is taking into account the usual traffic jams of that moment👨‍🎓.

    I use this a lot for work, just for planning, but on trip I prefere use the calendar, using each stop as an evento with the address, and than go point by point. that way I allways have the fastest route with the Traffic at the present time.

    Great video. Another way to fill in the "Add destination" field is by simply clicking on the map, instead of typing in the destination. First, click "+ Add destination" link, as you showed in your video. Make sure the cursor is blinking in the "add destination" field, then go to the map and click on the POI title text. Gmaps will autofill the destination to add the stop. In addition to clicking title text on the map, you can also click almost anywhere on any road and GMaps will estimate the address and autofill the add destination address into the field.

    I do this often to plan the best route for destinations for deliveries. I'd like to be able to factor in a time to be added at each stop point to account for the delivery time. to make the overall trip duration more accurate. It's not always obvious how to "continue" the trip when in mid journey either for example when you are at the first stop for a few minutes then get back in the vehicle

  • @angusorvid8840

    Over the years I worked both in the delivery business and as a Rideshare driver in the traffic nightmare that is Los Angeles. I found Google Maps to be much more useful than Waze or Apple Maps. Adding multiple stops made the delivery business a breeze. Of course, there were always those times when I'd follow my own judgement and not every twist and turn recommended by Google, but I know my own city well enough for sort of improvisation.

    The general route creation is easy....but what is needed is the ability to create the route in Maps, modify it as you like (ie take one road instead of the other), save the route, then send it to your phone WITH TURN BY TURN DIRECTIONS FOR THE ENTIRE ROUTE.....I can't believe Google hasn't done this....unless there is a way to do it I haven't found...or another app that does it???

    I wish that Google would handle the mileage differently. If I go from “A” to “B” it gives me the total time and distance. But, if you start adding stops then it stops giving the time and distance to the next stop as well as the total trip time and distance. I use a Garmin ZUMO XT and am spoiled I guess.

  • @nmcsilva
    @nmcsilva 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Even if we don't plan, we can add a stop at any time. Imagine a journey from point A to point B. During the trip I feel like stopping to eat. In Google Maps for Android we choose the option to add a stop and we can then choose a generic location (in this case it will be a restaurant) and Google will immediately indicate the restaurants in the vicinity. However, we can still choose the economic segment, type of food we want, etc... I gave the example of a restaurant, but as you can imagine, it could be a supermarket, medical clinic, hotel, etc....

    I have personally found that no matter what you put in for route planning Google Maps will route you on a path that it thinks is better. It does not matter if you told it don't go through the construction zone or the area with bars on all the business windows. I have had to learn the route myself and know the tool is going to send me where I never want to go. I truly wish it would not do that. Makes me want to go back to a paper map and I draw the lines for the roads.
    Recently I made notes of all the roads on a trip so I knew which direction or road to take (or not take) as Maps was going to decide on its own I needed to go the other way. If someone knows how to solve this I would really appreciate it.

    • @Mr01dschool
      @Mr01dschool 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Which is the main issue I have with it. I remember using mapping software from Delorme and Microsoft back in the late 90s that had a lot more customization with the routes you wanted to create. The main issue was that you had to use a bulky laptop and connected GPS. Also, there were no updated traffic reports and fast rerouting due to road work, accidents, etc.
      Now, we have a compact device in a smartphone with a built-in GPS, but the software is now less customizable when it comes to routes and functionality.

    When we plan cross country trips I like to use Google Sheets to list our points of interest, hotels, etc. I find the point of interest etc on Maps and copy the URL to my clipboard and go to the sheet where the name is and right click and use INSERT LINK. Then, to show the route put in the starting and end point. Then I copy that URL a cell using INSERT LINK with word MAP. Then using the route I add the next destination on the list and delete the previous start point and I have the next leg which is copied and linked into the next cell on the list. I do this for each leg of the trip. THEN when we get on the trip I open the sheet on my mobile device and click on the destination or the MAP/route and drive away. This planning document can then be populated with distance, driving times, notes, links to reservation documents, etc. Instead of clicking on the route cell we can just click on the destination and go from there.

    You really want to be be able to save on the phone your multi-stop routes for future use. It looks like you can't "pin" a route that has one or more stops - a pinned route could then be retrieved. The workaround I found is to "Add route to Home Screen" - and that works.

But when I send the altered route to my phone it doesn't use the altered route. Is there away to fix this? Thanks.

    Streets & Trips use to optimize but that stopped selling that application over 10 years ago. But this is a good second option by moving around the stops. Thank you.

  • @pssst3
    @pssst3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @dottotech Maps doesn't optimize the overall trip length because It assumes you have a reason for that order. eg, A trip that includes your appointments for the day, places that don't all open at the same time, or a dependency like picking up something and then taking it somewhere else.
    - Where it's possible to not use limited access highways, selecting bicycle as the travel option instead of car will often produce the shortest route..
    - Once you have planned a route, you can save it as a Chrome bookmark. Bookmarks are saved and automatically synced using your Google account to every device that you have signed into using Google Chrome. Opening the shortcut will give you the option to stay in Chrome or open it in the Maps app.
    - If you send a route to an Android phone you can save it on that device as a home screen shortcut.
    - With the desktop version you can insert dummy way points on roads to force a route to utilize city streets or shortcuts that you know of.
    - With trips across unfamiliar areas, you can force an offline map that surrounds the route to be stored, by setting a route that doesn't include your current location.

      On my smartphone (Samsung), when route is created and I click finish, then I use the 3 dot menu top right. From there I choose "save to start-screen". Then You will have a shortcut that will open Google Maps with the specific route.
      And if You have several saved routes You can create a specific screen for all Your routes.

    If you look on your phone map, there is a DARK BLUE route and the rest are LIGHT BLUE. The DARK blue is the FIRST destination. After you reach it, Google asks if you want to continue. You have to click a small "Continue" button to continue to the next destination. THIS IS A PAIN IN THE A** when you're on a motorcycle!!!!!! Do you know of any way to make a route continuous and eliminate the "continue" button?

    HI Dottotech, I just ran across your channel for the first time because I was trying to figure out how to build a map route and send it to my smartphone. Your video did the trick EXCEPT I'm running into a problem. The route I planned on my pc is being changed when it shows up on my phone. For example, on my PC I'm "dragging" the blue line route that google first suggests because I'm on a motorcycle and want to avoid the freeways. So I selected some country roads that wind around a bit and it's a nice ride anyway. However, when I send the route to my phone, my little detours are no longer showing up on the phone. The map that shows up on my phone is the the straight/direct point A to B ( with freeways) I was trying to avoid. If I click "no freeways" in the options menu it still doesn't put me on the country roads I was trying to pick myself back over on the PC. So, something's being lost in translation from the PC to my smartphone. Any ideas??

      When you drop down to Directions, it will give you distance and time to EACH STOP. I definitely use that when planning trips, because I usually only want to drive 4 Google Hours a day, otherwise there is no time for stops or enjoying the drive.
      Saving a trip helps to. Once it has a name, it is easier to share with my tablet, which I use each evening to make notes about that day and fine tune the next day's drive.

    I do this procedure so often when exploring here in Vietnam, however, the slightest deviation from the route, which is often unavoidable because of a landslide on the route, for example, google maps 'freezes' and offers no further audio or visual directions if I do not have data, which is SO damn frustration when up in the mountain regions. Yes, you can plan a custom route on Google Maps by adding waypoints manually, but it doesn’t let you click directly on intersections. Instead, you can drop pins on specific points (like streets) and adjust the route to go through those areas. You might need to tweak the route by dragging it on desktop to match the parade path you're planning.

    Hi! I must say that I really enjoy your videos. I once provided a suggestion to Google about a feature that I wish it would be available using Google Maps on my Pixel phone. I explained to Google that the default language I prefer on my Pixel is English. However, while using Google Maps in a Québec or France or any place where the name of streets are other than English, the English voice pronunciation of a French street names was horrible. Google understood my comment and made the feature available in Google Maps. In the setting of Google Maps you can select the language preference you like just for the app.
    Now, I got to get back to Google and submit an additional change the Google Maps. While using Google Maps, everything is fine until I decide to turn off the screen of my phone (to save battery life). Sometimes, I do not need to see the direction on the screen. Listening to voice is fine. I turn off the screen and now directions are given in English… the default setting for my phone.
    Thank you for your videos…

    Thanks for this tutorial. You definitely have a vast knowledge in how to put together a map with multiple stops etc. I would greatly appreciate if you could help me figuring out the best way to consolidate multiple completed section rides from my long tour across Europe.... I am interested in being able to post a Map in FB showing the progress symbolized with icons (i.e. Used by Google Map) thus far as I complete them each route section from my Long Tour across Europe. I plan on using Komoot to track my rides. Realize is a big ask... either way Thanks for your time and consideration. Manuel from Puerto Rico

    The problem I have with google maps is that once I optimize my route manually (for example making sure I arrive at a destination on the right hand side) and I send it to my phone it just undoes the personalized route I selected and auto routes the map the way it wants. Which is annoying since I use it to make deliveries.

      There have to be better alternatives out there. If the software from over 20 years ago was able to do it, Google or some other company can do it today.

    I prefer here maps. Especially for offline maps. Here maps includes posted speed limits on roads and your speed. Google maps offline maps doesn't show this

    Google Maps does some horrific routes here in Indonesia. I’ve ended up on “fastest rout” which was little more than a goat track! It has trouble differentiating streets, narrow streets and lanes.

    I have a rather simple question. Im planning a trip, lets say San Francisco - Las Vegas with stops at Yosemite NP and a route via Tioga Pass (120) in the summer next year. Right now i cannot display this route on maps because the Tioga Pass is closed during the winter. Is there a possibility to overcome this? Sure, I can set destination time to Juli 2023, but then I am not able to put in more stops.

    OK, am I missing something? So how do you start the trip on your phone? My phone has NO option to "start" the trip. All I see is "preview and steps" Where is the start button? Whats the point of organizing all these stops if the phone wont take you to any of them? Thank you

    I would like to do exactly the same thing but how can I make my own route to follow? (for use for like scenic route, etc...) ?
    What I really would wish for is Google to allow "MY MAPS" to be able to do turn by turn nav.

    I should have said, my google maps never displays my iPhone as an option to send directions to. When I click on the phone icon to send directions to, it only displays an email. And by the way, if I use that, I never receive an email. Do you know why my phone is not displayed? I'm signed in on all devices to my google account and they are all on the most recent version.

    Hey Steve, please make a video how do I share my location with kids. I am a Family manager and can see kids location. My goal is to broadcast mine while I am on my way to pick them up so they can see how close am I. Searched Google database and kinda applied all required settings, but still cannot share my location to my kids. Frustrating and irritating. Thanks in advance Steve!
