I'd love to know some tips to get enthusiastic about researching travel. I have a trip to Northern Europe in summer 25 and it's my first trip in many years without my travel agent organising everything for me. Apart from my regular things I like, trains and boats, and visiting great architecture, I am not one to spend hours researching every aspect, but I still like to have bookings made in advance. How do you recommend getting excited about the planning?
I have been using it for my son’s climbing trips. When we go to a new city, I mark hotels, make notes to remember the amenities at each hotel and make all restaurants. I love the directions and measurements functionality. This has been a game changer!
Very well done. I use My Maps extensively when planning long RV trips. Rather than using layers for each day I use them for categories of things. I have one for National Park units, another for places to camp/stay, another for hikes to do, etc. Also, there is a limit of 10 layers and that includes the driving direction layers. That can be limiting. I’ll look forward to part 2.
Thanks David, I’d love to see examples of how you did the layers for categories and then how you planned your trips. Did you use Google My Maps to also plan your driving directions?
Though I'm an Indian from interior south India I'm getting more and more fascinated by your videos. Your simple to understand language, narrations, guidance, maximum use of the tools including time, money, luggage, technologies, online stuff, organiser etc., etc., by minimum investment from my side. Nowadays my search for your videos becomes more intense than my early morning bed coffee. I'm in my mid 50s after chasing money on all these years to settle decently and settled in my house with my kids and grandkids, still I feel I missed a life which you are enjoying. But, now I have started to explore my own country itself by using your vital inputs. Still I'm a toddler for this life. But you are making it a lot better. Thanks a lot Bro...
Wow, I’ve watched countless videos on how to create a map and access it on my phone and could never figure it out, until now! Omg, you explained it so simple even I could do it. Thank you.🙏 I’m still working on figuring out how to view it on my phone where it’s easy to follow at my destination and doesn’t appear cluttered with so many other icons that I don’t want or need.
I use everything Google and never knew about this feature/tool. This is amazing! I would always have to use something else (another app, a list, etc.) but this is awesome that it will directly integrate with Google Maps once set up. Would love a part 2 to this! Thanks for the info!!
Awesome video! I was unaware of this powerful tool and plan to use it for an upcoming trip. Thanks for sharing your knowledge in an easy to follow and understandable format. Looking forward to Google My Maps Part 2 🤞
This was by far the best tutorial on using Google My Maps--including the perspectives of why you would want to use this feature, how to create the map, how to use the map on your phone, and how to share the map. Thank you!
Is it possible to import the stars, hearts & other places I saved on Google Maps? Otherwise it sounds like restarting from scratch. I gots hundreds of saved items...
Maybe I've seen tutorials covering Google Map planning but your tutorial was easy to follow and did EXACTLY what I was looking for. The maps I created were titled Country names, the Layers were towns and cities in that country and then, of course, I added hostels, cafes, bars and other places in that particular city/town to my Layer list. Fantastic ! Thank you for teaching an old dog new tricks !
Thank you very much for this tutorial. I've created a map with all LPG (Autogas) stations in Germany, Austria, Italy and Slovenia. Unfortunately you can not show the POIs during a navigation, but you can add a POI as stopover.
How do you use it when you are there? I am trying to go from point one to point two. the map closes after tapping point one and going back. You cant go to the point from the list.
EXCELLENT tutorial!! I had done a map myself with basic pins for London, but I had forgotten how to do it. Here you have explained it step by step soooooo well. And I have learned so much more of wonderful thngs I can add. Thanks
I've just spent the last hour or so unsuccessfully trying to work out how save a route/trip in Google Maps. THANK YOU for this video! I will save and rewatch until I have this down!
I've got to say that with the general availability of Google Gemini, most of your planning can be done in minutes if not seconds. I planned a motorcycle trip from Copenhagen to Croatia with suggested motels, sightseeing points, itineraries, etc, for a 2 week trip. Gemini spat out everything including routing in about 30 seconds
Thank you for this video, till now it was on my word file but this definitely helps. Appreciate your efforts for putting it into video. Thank you once again
I'm so glad I found you just right on time! I'll be going to visit Vienna in October for 2 weeks. Your tutorial will be very helpful. I'm so grateful for your hardworking. Thank you so much!!!!
This was an awesome tutorial and I would love to see a part 2. I’d also like to see how you would plan a trip if you knew nothing about the area you are going to. It seems like you already knew about the places you were going to visit.
I think I would simply get the address and go and be practical about it. Now that I've seen how you use the tools but also link each tool for a reason, it made me think. I would never just change the icon for example but now I see why that would be helpful. The link to the websites directly to see opening times or ticket prices for example is also very handy. At the end I got pretty exited to see how this could work indeed as a combo. Very well done, so a like and subscription from me.
This is excellent! I added our destinations day by day but then when I tried to go back and add layers for walking directions I cannot seem to add those walking directoins and the layer it added was then out of order or way at the bottom of the list.
My Maps has for sure become my favourite tool for planning travel. I recommend to anyone and everyone I get the chance to. This was a great video. Part 2 please!
Hi, thanks for these information. But, i can not see the notes of the pins on the google maps app in my phone. Is there any way to see these notes also on the phone?
Love the concept. However I have not found a way to make a route useable. Meaning once a route is create in “my maps” it does not have turn by turn directions to allow for navigation. Love your overview. Many thanks
Some of the additional info (pinned locations) that was added in the description box did not show up when view in iPhone. Any advise on how to solve that?
Really having trouble getting my map from my computer to iPhone and download the map so I can use it offline. Do you have another video to help? Thanks so much!
Great video. Is there a way I can follow on Google Maps app the route I created on My Maps (like it's possible to do when we import the route to the satnav)? I've been looking everywhere but couldn't find such thing, don't know if that's even possible. The best I could do is: 1- Open Google Maps app 2- Go to Saved 3- Click on Maps 4- Select the Map At this point I see the route but I can't start the navigation on the route. The closest thing I can do is to select a waypoint of the route and hit Directions button, which calculates a route to that single waypoint, but by default if doesn't assume the route I designed if Google finds quicker/more efficient routes.
hi, great video thanks. You say it intengrates with a cell phone which is where I am confused. . I've created a 'my maps', plotted a walking route, added turn by turn directions as you did but how do you then see that on my cell phone as actual directions given to me rather than just viewing the route.
Excellent explanation, and thank you for the work you’ve put into this video. It seems that no matter how many Google My Maps tutorials I watch, nobody talks about a question that I keep asking. If I’m visiting Ireland and relying on My Maps, chances are I will NOT have either cellular service nor Wi-Fi connection (if I’m wandering the streets, etc). So, will I be able to use My Maps offline like I can use regular Google Maps offline..?? Thanks Cheers from Canada
I was impressed with the clarity of your explanation/demonstration and I have started creating a MyMap. However, when I access it in my phone, the 'pinpoints' I have added do not open to anything. So, for instance, I have added France Square in panama to my MyMap and it shows up fine in the list on My phone. When I try to click on the 'link' in the list, nothing happens. When I click on the pinpoint on the map none of the information I added comes up. Only directions and More Info - i.e. back to Google Maps. Is this what is supposed to happen or have I missed something? Thanks for any light you can shed on this.
Super comprehensive guide. Really appreciate you taking time to show us. I am going to be using this to plan my trip now . Anything else you can show us would be great.... would love another video showing in more depth how to use this planned maps once you're on you're trip. Can you plan an actual route and see it as a line??
Nice video that clarifies a lot, but…. Have made my own maps on My maps with directions. Seems impossible to use the directions in the mobile app. You can see the different descriptions but cannot start a guided tour of any of them. Is it not possible to start a guided tour in the app via the map you made?
It worked very well for my desktop. But when I tried to use it on Pixel 7, I was able to see the several layers, but when I tapped any one of them, nothing happened. I was hoping to use the Layer I made for directions from point a to point b, but when tapped nothing happened. I have the latest Maps version. What gives?
Hi there, thank you for this video. Do you know how to create a map for a virtual challenge so when people run where they are they can log in the distance to show on my created map?
BRILLIANT! Please do a Part 2! I came across this video as I was seeking something about automatic route optimization (which apparently doesn't exist for us regular folks but is available as something delivery services pay for). Can you make it so it ONLY shows the items you have chosen for your layer(s)?
Ian - I'm hip deep in this process planning for Spain leaving 18 June. I have downloaded some guide maps from others and made some myself. Am I doing something wrong? Note this works fine on the laptop - just open the created map in Google My Maps and everything is there just fine.
I created the Google My Map, I can retrieve it on my mobile device (Google Maps), however can’t figure out (or if I can) make the route an active guidance tool. I keep having to drop a pin at my next point and navigate to it - keeping my head down along the way.
Question! Is it possible to add additional pins to the map on my iPhone while traveling? I don’t have laptop with me where I originally created the map. Thanks!
Awesome, never heard of the tool, which makes me look like a fool :P But, I believe we can always learn from others. For sure it makes traveling a lot easier, thanks for the video. By the way, I've been following your YT growth for some time now, really great channel, you have a bright future, for sure.
Can I download my google map to my phone off line, so I can use with my offline map (just incase my phone lost signal, I can not access on line my google map)?
Thanks for this video. I'd heard of Google My Maps but wasn't really sure how to use it. This is so helpful. Thank you! And yes, a Part 2 would be awesome!
When I view a saved travel map on my iPhone, the icons disappear. This seems to happen when I zoom in or when I click on a saved icon. Also it happens after a few minutes just viewing without clicking or zooming. Is there a fix for this? I have to keep reopening the map. Thank you
From a fellow My Maps aficionado, great tutorial! I organize my layers by lodging and activities, but I like the idea of doing it by travel day. Well done!
Great video that even I can follow (I'm definitely not tech savvy)! Your explanations are always clear and understandable in all your videos. Please do a part 2! ;)
So having imported a GPX file to Google My Maps on my laptop, saved and renamed it, found it in Google Maps on my android mobile, I have no idea what to do with it next. Let's say I'm stood at the start point of the route, now what? How do I instruct Google Maps on my mobile to begin guiding me around the route? Or do I just work out which direction to start walking in and try to keep the blue dot (which is me), on the route line to find my way around it??
But can you use your newly created and saved map as your voice instructed sat nav in your car. If not it's just like drawing a line on a paper map? My only use for this would be to stop google maps sending me down narrow dangerous roads as presently there is no way to stop google maps doing that.
Let me know if I should do a Part 2??

superbly useful and so well explained. thank you very much.
Great video! Can I use my maps on downloaded maps for off-line use when overseas?
Thank you! I tried it before and gave up as I found it impossible to figure out how to use! Now able to create itineraries with ease!
I really liked your video! Thank you for walking through with an example. It really made it easier to understand.
Simple and very efficient explanations, thank you !

Great video-I love detailed trip planning. Which features of this, if any, are available when there is no cell service?
Really helpful. Thank a lot .
Does it have the functionality to reorder stops to make the route more efficient?
thanks bro good job HELPED ME SOOOO MUCH
Great video. Had been using Apple Maps but this is so much better

Thank you so much, regards from Perú 😊
Thanks for the info! But...how do I get the route to "start"? I see the directions on my saved maps, but I can't find a way to start the directions.
Excellent explanation, and thank you for the work you’ve put into this video.
It seems that no matter how many Google My Maps tutorials I watch, nobody talks about a question that I keep asking.

I haven’t tried this in a while, but with standard Google maps, I’ve printed the overview and details to PDF. Easy to store, share and view offline.
Excellent tutorial showing all the functionalities!
I was wondering if we can move the places from day to day? Or can we first add all places then classify it to days?
Great instructions! Yes, a part 2 of maps please.
I was impressed with the clarity of your explanation/demonstration and I have started creating a MyMap. However, when I access it in my phone, the 'pinpoints' I have added do not open to anything. At 10:15, how to connect pins on map to create walking tour. THANK YOU!!
Is there a way to plan the route and then have it act like a GPS Through your directions?
It worked very well for my desktop. But when I tried to use it on Pixel 7, I was able to see the several layers, but when I tapped any one of them, nothing happened. I was hoping to use the Layer I made for directions from point a to point b, but when tapped nothing happened. I have the latest Maps version. What gives?
I’m kind of having trouble but I’ll learn soon!! Thanks from Brasil!!!👍
Fantastic instructions, at last someone has explained Google My Maps and how to use it.
Glad it was helpful, thanks for watching! ❤️
Hi there, thank you for this video. Do you know how to create a map for a virtual challenge so when people run where they are they can log in the distance to show on my created map?
Once you have created directions how do you use the directions on your mobile? I can see the steps or points but not how to get from a to b
Wow!! This is life changing for me. I had no idea I could do all these with Google Maps. Thank you so much for this video!
BRILLIANT! Please do a Part 2! I came across this video as I was seeking something about automatic route optimization (which apparently doesn't exist for us regular folks but is available as something delivery services pay for).
Can you make it so it ONLY shows the items you have chosen for your layer(s)?
One of the best travel videos out there. Please do more like these!
Ian - I'm hip deep in this process planning for Spain leaving 18 June. I have downloaded some guide maps from others and made some myself. The problem with Google My Maps not being available on our iPhones is that the Google Maps info doesn't carry over to a created map. IOW adding a location, such as a restaurant, to a created map in My Maps will not allow the info such as star rating, hours, etc to be accessible on our mobile device. Do you know of a work around? Am I doing something wrong?
Note this works fine on the laptop - just open the created map in Google My Maps and everything is there just fine.
Loved this, so much good info. Part 2 for sure - in case you haven't done it yet!
Thanks!
Great video 👍🏻
But then how to use the planning to actually navigate as a GPS ?
Interesting tutorial. Allows to look on a travel planning from a new angle.
I would definitely give it a try when I get a chance to travel again!
Awesome, never heard of the tool, which makes me look like a fool :P But, I believe we can always learn from others. For sure it makes traveling a lot easier, thanks for the video. the best tutorial i could found about google my maps, tankiu
I never knew this existed!! Tysm, basic gmaps was just not cutting it for me and I was about to give up lol
Can I download my google map to my phone off line, so I can use with my offline map (just incase my phone lost signal, I can not access on line my google map)?
thanks helpful information
Thanks for this video. I'd heard of Google My Maps but wasn't really sure how to use it. This is so helpful. Thank you! And yes, a Part 2 would be awesome!
When I view a saved travel map on my iPhone, the icons disappear. This seems to happen when I zoom in or when I click on a saved icon. Also it happens after a few minutes just viewing without clicking or zooming. Is there a fix for this? I have to keep reopening the map. Thank you
Super helpful! Thanks!
From a fellow My Maps aficionado, great tutorial! I organize my layers by lodging and activities, but I like the idea of doing it by travel day.
Well done!
Thanks for sharing and watching our video❤️
Great video that even I can follow (I'm definitely not tech savvy)! Your explanations are always clear and understandable in all your videos. Please do a part 2! ;)

Have there been any updates or improvements in My Maps in the past couple of years? I last used it a few years ago.
Can you do that with a phone or do you have to have a computer
A great help in making a travel plan.
Great video with good tips, thanks for it. ;)
Nice video... to the point. Thank you so much. :-) Love from India
How can I find the distances between the systems of each of the approximately 140 locations in the fastest way?
I have created a walking my map and found it in Google maps but how to I get point by point directions? Point A to point B and so on?
But can you use your newly created and saved map as your voice instructed sat nav in your car. If not it's just like drawing a line on a paper map? My only use for this would be to stop google maps sending me down narrow dangerous roads as presently there is no way to stop google maps doing that.
amazing video! I used it as a follow-along tutorial to create a travel plan for Savannah!
That is great to hear! Thanks for watching ❤️
