I tried and tried this and after trial and error I have successfully made one! I ended up buying 3 different pumps just to find one on Amazon for 17 bucks, that would push 160gallons of water through an hour. I used 1” pvc pipe for this as well. The sand was slow to fall with one air stone so I tried a bigger airstone with no luck either. Eventually I made one more hole in my pvc pipe and ran another smaller airstone through it since I could fit 2 in there snug. One sits at the base as he instructed, and the other is just slightly above that one. I used the substrate he recommended in the video, but also found that the $1.25 craft sand from dollar tree works just as well too if you don’t want to spend 30 bucks on a bag and only really need a couple of cups of it altogether. I hope this helps bc I scoured these and other comment sections of videos doing this looking for answers. This is what finally worked for me! I hope it helps someone else too who may be struggling!

I tried doing exactly the same thing I can get water to come out but the sand will not come up there tube so disappointing
The sand might be to heavy or your air pump is to little might need a stronger one

What size airstone are you using is it 3 or 5cm

That’s so funny, I saw the first part again a few days ago. Because I want to do that idea and bang you remade, that might be a sign lol. The only problem is that I have a 10 gallon tank so idk how well it would turn out. And I have to go and refresh my memory on some of the videos for the live stream. Can’t wait. Oh yeah I remember U!! Oh yeah 10g even easier just use a 1” pvc because it works better and just cut it shorter to the desired height I would make about 3” from the top

I don’t leave the light on very long on this aquarium so I don’t have real bad algae problems but if you do just a smaller pleco or some algae eaters and or some amano shrimp

@@ijennielesieur you gotta remember theres a lot of movement in that corner sand is constantly being moved and sucked up through the pvc pipe and shot out of the top of it as it comes down the rocks and recirculates back through so Amy Fish waste that happens to even get back there will eventually get sucked up but also remember there not to many fish that can even get to that corner you really have to take your time when stacking the rocks 🤙🏽💯🤙🏽

Oh no they air stone blocks the PVC pipe so that doesn’t happen but fry would definitely get sucked up but if they do they just get spit out of the top and back in the tank no harm 🤙🏽🐠🤙🏽 and welcome to the OHANA appreciate u

I have a few questions if you don't mind me asking. First of all, can the sand work for both salt and fresh water? Is the other side of the sand just a normal gravel ? I'm also wondering how much something like this runs for $$? Could you add everything you got in the description? I have a fresh water and just love this idea but it will be the first time making one. Any tips? Any advice I will appreciate =)

This was awesome, thanks. Perfect timing too. My mixed Malawi tank is getting upgraded from 50 to 125 next month and I'm going to give it try. It's going to be a peninsula tank in my living room and a waterfall would look so rad on the wall side. I'll probably just use the same sand for the whole tank cause my dudes like to play in it....they would definitely mix the sand. If you can get your hands on it, golf course bunker sand is some of the finest sand there is. Thats what I'm going to use but I will also mix it with Aragonite to help with ph.

Hasn’t yet the sand substrate is to fine to clog anything up but I found that using a 1” pvc is way better than using a 3/4” 🤙🏽🤙🏽
