American tanks are fastened to the track with a bolt molded into the rubber. A large nut is tightened to keep the rubber shoes on the track section. The slide on rubber shoes require a crew to completely remove the tracks from the tank. The bolt/nut pads don't require a complete removal from the tank. I changed lots of rubber pads on the M-106 mortar carrier. The M-106 was a mortar carrier variant of the M-113.
How did they change tank track's in the field & with out all them tools must have been a quicker way refer to workshop manuals ? Nice job blood sweat & bruises
Dead easy - select neutral and pull a stick - you can then use the rotating sprocket as a winch. You carry a track rope, so it is no great problem. Same when you take a link out to compensate for wear.
My son-in-law wouldn’t agree with your opinion as he got a crushed big toe with a welding bottle . That’s not PC and I know the weight of those tracks, heavy.. H&S has saved many lives in mining , heavy industry, engineering. Some of it IS O.T.T but overall it saves lives and it’s not Politically Correctness. If people ignore safety they may get hurt. I known of two soldiers who were KILLED ignoring safety,one sleeping under an armoured vehicle on soft ground and the other crushed between two tanks by using a balk of wood to push a dead tank into a garage bay instead of using a Hollibones (A Frame) he had a week to serve after doing his 22 years 😢

Yes, these blocks act as a suspension. My unit once thought they could get away with replacing only half of them on their M109A2's , so 50% old blocks and 50% new blocks. Bad mistake and they had to fix it before they went on parade.

Dit gaat ook zonder zo'n spreidapparaat. Grote voorhamer! Deed het in 1978 op een m107. 4 kanonnen, kost wel even tijd ja.

We didn't do that, change tracks in the field, that wasn't necessary, because the tanks we took with us were fine.
