I think your criticism is perfectly valid and Matt D’Avella would probably say that the goal isn’t owning nothing, rather it’s being intentional about what you own. If something adds true value to your life, then you shouldn’t get rid of it just for the sake of owning less.

ok. Enjoyed the discussion. This sounded more like a personal issue. Minimalism or maximalism extremes smell like an OCD or some other problem. That’s not a judgement. It’s probably the case. If you are not organized you can be min or max and it does not matter. This is all personal. I am always reminded that just in the case of how some of the best podcasts were started due to someone trying to fix themselves it can also help people that listen. That all being said it’s a good discussion.

I became a minimalist after a break up and moving a 2 bedroom apartment to a room I was renting. After a year I moved into a studio. February I'm packing everything I own into a bike trailer for a tour. It's not for everyone but for me I'd rather be a suitcase away from gone.

there is a part of me that did not want to comment on this because in reading most of the comments as is the case with most things now a days everyone pretty much follows someone and the “bubble effect” is in full bloom. To my understanding the way this is presented has nothing or little to do with the true meaning of minimalism. Someone on here said they thought minimalism regresses creativity? How? The idea of minimalism is not only about stuff. It definitely is rooted in that and in no way am I going to tell anyone what to buy or keep, ect. You can do whatever you want. I enjoyed the premise of this video as a way to have a discussion. It just feels like what the word really means or how you live it was kinda lost. That’s it.

      @runesbroken ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@roguewavecreative I agree with that, I think minimalism was initially just an attitude towards a change that some people felt they wanted to make which leaves their lives less cluttered. To me that definition absolutely makes sense, but from the outside it looks like it slowly morphed into almost a contest. I'm generally for consolidation of functionality in tech, for instance why own both a desktop and a laptop when you're not moving around. But Sara's point and I think what your citations point is regarding creativity - I can see how someone who is in a race to get rid of all their things could unknowingly end up being limited by lack of proper tools that they may not even realize they can utilize.

I really think this thing also with a lot of what she said and also when you look at her space I mean let’s be honest Amy situation is almost like I would say a 1% or and again I don’t mean that in a bad way it’s just that I think most people look at that and sometimes try to emulate it when they don’t have the financial means but again it is not for me to tell people what to do I mean I like having less because it actually opens up my mind more versus the other way around where when I get cluttery I get paralyzed but again that’s me

One thing this video made me realize was that BEFORE I left NYC, I used to hoard every laptop I've ever owned that never broke down, but at the same time, were too obsolete to use anymore. I think I'm kinda glad I parted with them because i was able to make space for my first ever macbook/art tablet setup, but I do kinda miss looking nostalgically at my stack of 2000s netbook-era computers!

The key is buying things of value and figuring out where you want to spend your time. I built myself a full size claw machine in the middle of 2020 because that's what you do in lockdown, but have since realized I don't want to build things with wood. So I've unloaded all my tools except for basic things like power drills and screwdrivers, etc. for basic handyman needs.
In 2016 or so I really got into designing circuit boards and building things with Arduinos. I've now unloaded a lot of those things because I reduced my project to something much simpler that doesn't require hot things or sharp things or custom parts.
The things I buy a lot of have value. I have so much Disney art, I've now bought gallery hanging systems to display it.

This resonates so much. I still rememeber back in 2020 (when you were supposed to be at home...) the only videos that trended in the productivity category was either directly/indirectly related to the minimalism guide to workspace, study table, bedroom etc. Even brand logos were mindlessly reduced down to a minimalist approach, which tbh made me a bit uncomfortable after this. The minimalism movememnt definitely helped me with life improvment in genenral, but at some point it started to give me OCD.

I got introduced to minimalism as a 16-year-old, and I thought it was the answer to all my problems. It kinda became an obsession, and now I know it was just a neologism for organizing everything in your life and keeping it clean. Organization saves a lot of time and I learned a lot of it during my minimal phase, so I guess it just adds another layer of complexity to my personality, which is good. I tell others stories of this phase like an old man tells about how the town used to be.

Sometimes people will create a whole new naming of a thing they are not willing to quite read to understand.
Minimalism is just keeping only essential for your needs. If your needs require 20 cameras, that's still minimalism, if you have a camera that you can't quite explain why it is needed for you, or you have two cameras that do exactly the same thing with not enough alteration for you to justify having it, that's what you should get rid because it is just a unecessary weight to you, if you don't feel so, just keep them.

And as someone who gets stressed out by having too much useless stuff just being everywhere it’s a good thing for me to utilize. But I don’t have nothing and on the design side, I lean more into maximalism design with intentionally bough pieces. It feels more homey have dark colors on walls and things I really like everywhere, but not overcrowding

Great job on the video Sara! Thanks for making it. My biggest problem is that I absolutely love (it's nearly pathological) being the guy that has just the right thing. So it means that I hold onto stuff that has long-since outlived it's usefulness. I recently did a accessories purge, and I finally got rid of a VGA to Component video adapter. Now I'm looking at that new FX30 and wondering what I can get rid of to make cash happen. I would sell my a6400, but at this point it's not going to make me enough money to be worth not having it as a secondary camera, so I'll just keep it. And that's exactly how I end up with so much surplus in my office.

Minimalism = Own things that essentials only and just amount that you needed.
Maximalism = Have everything you need and potentially needed but organize them with storages, more storages to shape your living spaces to be exactly what you needed and comfy for
So What I am? I'm a minimalist in things like clothing, foods, kitchen utensils, sleeping things, etc.
But I am a maximalist in my hobbies like photography, gadgets, audio like mic/speakers/etc, my scooter (my daily transportations) to carry me anywhere between cities or even go into jungle. And yes I do need so much storages lol.

I'm a collector and have procured various things over the decades, be it tech or gizmos or action figures or miniatures or just gifts and memorabilia from places I have visited. I had all this stuff stored in boxes for several years but now I have a large enough space with enough shelves to have it all displayed. To others it sometimes means nothing or messy or pointless but to me each piece tells a story. Its like a scrapbook of my life but with actual things instead of words. Like having a shelf just for all the phones I've owned. When I look at them individually they take me back to the memories of that time. I think Minimalism is learning and adapting to live with the least amount of things possible whereas Maximalism is having everything you need and learning to organise it efficiently and creatively.

It means not buying or owning something unless you need it or it makes your life better. There were far too many videos on TH-cam produced by people who did not understand the concept.
Example: Minimalism says that if you have a closet full of clothes you have not worn in years and have no intention of wearing again, you don't need them. So get rid of them by passing them on to someone who will enjoy them. It does not mean getting rid of everything except black t-shirts and a couple pairs of jeans.

But, maximalism probably isn't the answer either, it's not like we need an excuse to be any more consumery than we already are (myself included) for obvious reasons. What about a middle ground where we just take a little more consideration before buying things (do we really need it/want it). Also we can be more aware of where we are buying certain things from as well as getting some things on the used market, more local shiz, etc.

Minimalism feels soulless to me, how the subtleties around us are replaced with boxy, simplistic, robotic designs. Maximalism is also super chaotic. That being said, my room started with minimalism and transformed into maximalism. Entropy FTW xD

If it's a fad you're doing to fit in you will regret it. I've cut back quite a bit in the kitchen and I cook and bake so much more now. Cleaning is easier and enjoyable where I've cut back too. ❤ It's a matter of values. For me it works great from a Christian and pretty cottage loving perspective but if the life you want doesn't match it then it will be a problem.

  • @jordansarkisian

I just can't do stuff. The more I have in my phone, around my house, makes my brain just feel so chaotic and exhausted and takes away from simpler things or just more individual things. I'm a quality over quantity guy, and even then i'd rather just put all my love and energy into less stuff than a little love and energy spread far across tons of stuff. I'm only one man, only have one life, as I got older I realized damn...there just isn't enough time in ones life to spread it so thin:( Also just better for the world/environment/etc but that's a much broader explanation lol.
But do your thing Sara everyones different, don't waste time being a minimalist/essentialist if you love ya stuffs. Don't go overboard tho I have some hoarder friends and I can barely walk thru there house...there are only small pathways that allow for movement lol

Pfftt some things you can't minimize because it's all about utility and function. If those dudes were true minimalists they'd be monks.

Since i was a kid, everytime i got a new lego set, i would always keep the box, every receipt i got, i would always keep it, anything that i didn't need, i would ask for and always tell myself "maybe ill need it someday". Today, I live in a room where I cannot even walk.

PSA Organizing doesn't mean minimalist. It just means things are in an easy to reach space and structured in a way that you can get to anything you want easily. Idk where this give away your life you will feel happier with just a phone, a bed and a plant came from.
Disorganization is not hoarding and organization doesn't have to look attractive.

Minimalism doesn't mean having least stuff. It means having least unnecessary stuff. Especially useful for people whose mind is too disconnected, or too active. It is said that your thoughts come from your surroundings. It has been seen that minimalism had a greater calmness for someone. It works great for people who tend to forget stuff, and for lazy ppl. Less shit to worry about. And it is essential for people with a budget. One needn't sell or throw existing stuffs, just stop purchasing unnecessary things for a start.
Maximalism is not for people who check prices before purchasing things. Especially not for people who are lazy. It is for people who love to arrange stuff regularly. Keeping lots of stuff and not maintaining is nothing more than idiocy, carelessness.

You can create awesome videos with just these minimalist items! Less is MORE!

Minimalism is not dead. The consume less part of it is desperately needed if you want your children's children still have an earth left to walk and live on. I case you missed it. About 6 weeks a go we passed the early budget of all the things, resources we use from the earth and have available every year. The remaining part of the year we live in debt making it worse for the future. And that dept is a dept that comes with an high interest. Loan shark level interest.

I feel like most people confuse digital minimalism with minimalism in general(or analog minimalism you may call it). So buying the latest MacBook isn’t digitally minimalistic, it’s physically minimalistic. You’ve got this powerful CPU that can run a lot of apps at once which is not digitally minimalistic. I have 2 old laptops (Core 2 Duo, Core i5 2gen)running Linux, one is for school work and one is programming and it’s digitally minimalistic , cuz they have only few specific purposes and thus, there are less distractions.
It’s kind of minimalistic digitally and maximalistic physically but both are pure, meaning they don’t have parts of each other in them(they are truly separated)
