Ever since starting this minimalism journey in 2015, I actually own much more items than I did before. The only difference is that I'm aware of what I own and enjoy my items much more because it's a curated collection of things I like: books, art, art supplies, tech, musical instruments, etc... Damn now you make me wonder how long I've been watching Matt... I think like 3 or 4 years. It's glad to share, even with some people you don't know, like something that you all grew up together with
My wife and I recently visited a couple of family members who have TONS of stuff, it was really taxing being in that kind of environment for the first couple of days and it really helped me get into perspective that I was just organizing my mess, not actually getting rid of unused/unnecessary items in my life. So just in a couple of hours, my wife and I went on to unpack our stuff from the trip and start getting rid of all that clutter in our bedroom and bathroom, we both felt so good about it that we are planning on doing it with each different part of the apartment. I honestly can't wait to see the difference.
So I counted only my clothes and I was pretty shocked. I have a total of 145 clothing items. Most notably 31 pairs of socks and 15 shirts and 12 pairs of trousers. I think I could easily live with only half of each of these categories. Recommend this to everyone watching! The whole house might be slightly overkill, but one category can be done relatively fast and is still very insightful!
to be fair - you always need more socks, undies and shirts as this is the thing that you will need to change all the time. Maybe the 12 pairs of trousers is a bit too much - but if you go to two types of sports like me and count sports pants as trousers - it is very easy to get to 12. it really depends on how you use them if it is really a lot.
I recently cut my whole wardrobe down to ten of everything. It is much easier now. I did it a month ago and am planning on going even lower. Maybe 7 items of each thing. Then all I need to do is washing once per week. It is quite liberating having just the clothes you love to wear not old things that you don’t use
@Fit at 42 I'd might keep 9 of at least the basics. Extra underwear and socks is almost a necessity, in my opinion. You can rewear a lot of things, but not underwear.
A few months back I thought about doing that same experiment for my own sake and curiosity. But instead I took a look at my sewing and tools drawers and decided that my time would be spend better using these 1209 items instead of counting them.

I feel like I'd be the same with my wife. I'm the minimalist but I have so many cables and batteries and techie things. I so wish you'd recorded Nat's reaction when you told her that you own more things
I did this in early 2018 and called it "Inventory of Things I Own" in my bullet journal. Just recently graduated from college and transitioning to dedicating most of my time working. I thought to myself that was a good time to spend checking what I own, what I can dispose of, especially because I had so much paper stuff from my college days. So glad that I got introduced to bullet journaling and minimalism at that point because both areas promoted intentional living. After doing that, the weight of owning a lot of stuff that I don't really use regularly felt more real and incentivized me to buy slower and less. There's a time gap between wanting something and getting it. I only wrote it in my BuJo. But after watching this, I'm inclined to do it again, do a revisit, and use excel to categorize everything, i.e., to nerd it out.
My hat tip to you, Mat for your patience and energy put on counting literally every things that you and Nat own. This really takes times and finally, you got it. I look forward to learning more as I grow in this process, and I will continue to watch your videos to try and absorb as much as I can from you.
Hi Matt, I loved your self arguing part, that was so funny and athentic and shows the point pretty good, to never take all the intentionalism never to strict, but to enjoy the things that you own is the most meaningful part . Thanks for all the effort making this video :)
I made it a habit to move all I don’t use for a week to the garage … and when I moved I never looked in the garage but asked people to clear it out. Very liberating and keeps you mind clean in that if you REALLY needed something later on it would still be there.
I hate Christmas ornaments too but when they bring our partners so much joy I think probably not criticizing them is is good idea. A lot of this relates back to special memories (or the absence of them) from childhood and is really visceral.
Your comment is spot on! I grew up in extreme emotional neglect, but Christmas was always special. It brings me great joy to see others' decorations and pull out my own treasures, some handmade decades ago. It's moving to me that people invest their time to create something magical for others during a dark and cold time of year. 😺💖🎄
The summer before my first year of college, I created a spreadsheet and counted every thing in my bedroom (where I kept the overwhelming majority of my stuff), and my total was 1,676, which includes 236 wardrobe items (minus jewelry/bags). Since then, I've pared down more of my possessions, but I've also continued to acquire new things, many of which have been value adding but also some that I've come to recognize as getting in the way of an intentional life. Like Matt said in the video, holding guilt for one's mistakes isn't good, so I do my best to treat them as learning experiences and guides for following the path that aligns with where I want to go.
Ok here's the thing I might never count how many items I have. But definitely over the years inspired by Matt i have become intentional with my purchases especially with clothing. i might never get rid of my books over the years but i do own less of things which are not used and i believe this is the truly being minimalistic. As always great content Matt.
Damn, this must have been a TON of work. Huge respect for undertaking this and making such an amazing video about it. Just a small part of the video but that stop-motion was beautifully done.
I have followed your minimalist lifestyle journey since I first watched your video in 2015 until now 2022. I didn't think it was 7 years since I first watched your video Matt. Thank you for discussing minimalism in a very fun and informative way
Not too long ago I counted everything in my wardrobe and categorized it all. My friends and family called me crazy for doing it, but it brought me a sense of calm knowing exactly what I own. That was only my wardrobe though, so you can imagine how thrilled I was to watch this video...... 🤓
Nat is NEVER going to let you live this down, Matt! First thing you need to do is get those paper documents digitised! There's no way you need to keep paper copies of so many things.
I've been thinking about this and battling this, thanks for doing this video. Having a home gives you a lot of space, we're homesteaders, and market gardeners too and that comes with it's own clutter, and I'm totally focusing on if it's used and useful and leaving it at that!
I agree that it takes a lot of WORK to recognize and determine how it got out of control. I'm finally learning how to block out all the companies who want to sell so much to me. I hadn't realized how many things I had bought to 'fix' my clutter problem. That was an eye opener. Today I have approximately 10 large empty containers that held things I was previously organizing in those boxes. Also I reduced my holiday decorations by half this year. Now all that stuff is gone. It feels good! I have a long way to go, but I'm heading down the right path. Thanks for your very fun video today!
It personally took me severals days bits by bits .... but with no stress. I own an Airbnb flat that I rent this was useful too knowing what stuff I had. But I left aside food, toiletries items, papers ...
The guilt on seeing the actual “actual” things that you owned!!! Anxiety level 📈😬 For me I do count and list the things that I own like audit every quarter and update my list. Kudos Matt! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Admitting you had more things than Nat made me like this video, the pie graphs got me to subscribe. I’m not gonna count the things in my house but I’m inspired to do some decluttering today.
I want to go minimalist but the anxiety of counting what I own, to decrease it to a smaller size, freaks me out. Great content. I swear my life has changed for the better from looking at life from this guy's perspectives.
If it helps, what brings one person joy will bring someone else misery. Additionally, one person only finds value in 52 items, while someone else may find value in 300,000 items. The great news is there is no number! If you get value out of everything in your home, awesome!
@@ArtJourneyUK Yeah, you're right. I was just saying the concept of this video gave me anxiety bc I got like 100x the amount of clutter than he had in this video
@@TylerLloyd that's exactly what I did. Just moved from an apartment to house and the amount of things I left behind bc I hadn't worn it or used it in months was astounding.
Been supporting you and watching you like a fan for years now from South Africa and honestly this was such amazing insight. I understand how this gave you anxiety but this gave me a lot of relief! Well done Matt!
I did that 3 years ago for my clothing and that changed my life, I remember clearly everything is own, I rated with starts so when I don’t like as much something I am not feeling guilty of getting rid of it, it’s SO nice
If anyone is moving soon and are currently packing, counting your items that you are keeping in the move and categorizing them would help out future you. I have started counting and recording my food inventory recently but I would definitely benefit from doing this with other items in my home. Thank you Matt!
I clicked on the Video, paused and started discussing with my friends "what defines as a thing" ...just a few seconds later Matt does the same :D Awesome Experiment
I loved seeing this experiment. I don’t care about numbers BUT I do care about value brought by my items like you said and I’m so glad I have the things I do and that since minimizing I have realized having things that are high quality is important to me.
Whenever I play video games I tend to always organise my inventory, so I thought why not do that in reality? Then I tried to do inventory, but the problem was categorising the stuff. So I looked into Muji and IKEA online shop on how they sort items. Once I’m done I think I’ll finally be able to scratch the itch that my brain is having. Really inspired by your video now to continue mine! Thanks!
in case you are still doing this, here is a tip: I have at my desk 3 drawers for stuff I use daily (e.g. pens, lip balm, tissues, headphones), one for stuff I use weekly (like sewing supplies or sticky notes and stamps) and stuff I use monthly (like facemasks and my hair dryer) - these are my quick access drawers, but the items in it would fall into another category if they were in a store
This video is a piece of art. Personally as a fresh starter on youtube I can learn so much from your videos. It is so well thought, every detail on how to tell this story. The fun mood, omg. Congratz!
Technically, your business wouldn't work without all the gear, much like the harddrive doesn't work without the cable. And since that's one thing... I'd say you nailed it ✨
I moved out of my family home a while back with only tne necessities, figuring id go back and get anything i really found myself wanting later. Ended up not needing much of it, was a good way to figure out what stuff i really valued.
Great video. Been a minimalist since around 1995. There were times I owned less, there were times I owned more. But you are right, it's about being intentional. Really enjoyed this, now I want to count everything.
I didn’t think I would be this interested into this. But I was! I’ve been wanting to get into minimalism for awhile now. I think in my storage room alone is 1,000 things 😅. But I’m moving in a few months and basically starting with nothing so hopefully I can practice it. Thanks for the video Matt. Missed you the last few weeks! Happy late new year

I love your Honesty! And your gear is your business and your passion, so no guilt there. I just got to know a couple who lives in a former church because they love history and own 50'000 (!) books! So go for your passion.
I‘m definitely ready for a big decluttering session now. I‘m gonna count during the process, so that I can see how much unnecessary stuff I have around. I‘m a minimalist since 2018 but this journey never ends.
This is very brave to confess what you really own. I think you may have to admit that your wife is in fact a minimalist? 🤔 I was surprised by how many clothes & personal care items you had Matt lol 😂. Loved the video 👍🏻
I really enjoyed watching your misery 😁 This video is inspiring me to go through all my stuff and sell/donate everything I don't really use. Thanks Matt.
Knowing I have a sock problem - I love them! - I decided to count my socks this morning. 67 pair. That includes sport socks, trouser socks, and slipper socks. 67. Sigh. Believe it or not, the rest of my wardrobe is rather minimal. Just not the socks.
Your videos really helped me name that feeling/tendency, I’ve always had, that made feel uncomfortable whenever I was surrounded by too much stuff or whenever as a kid I got rid of toys I didn‘t want anymore. Minimalism and severe OCD are a heck of a combo, boy I tell you.
Matt, since you use everything you own, I'd say you've arrived at the proverbial minimalist "there". Congratulations! I got curious one night about that 300,000-thing statistic and wrote to Dr. Regina Lark, the organizer who mentioned that number to the LA Times (the article that everyone likes to quote). She replied that she had no details on the study that produced that, and had gone through her files to no avail. Googling produced nothing. So there's really nothing to back that up: who did the study, how the households were chosen, how things were counted, etc. The 100-thing challenge was a little suspect, because Dave Bruno, who started it, counted only his personal things, not shared things as you did. He also counted 300 books as one thing. So I'm amazed that people took that so literally.
Despite the danger of inducing anxiety, I'm really inspired to do this! I reminds me of the Konmari method which I feel a lot of people misunderstand, but one of the pillars is physically interacting with each item to decide if you want it in your life. It's really confronting to have to go out of your way and touch/count each object like that!
I have done the "count everything" exercise a few times. It was easy right after I lost almost everything in an apartment fire in 1989. The insurance claim experience led me to keep a reasonably good inventory of my stuff in the future. The advent of digital cameras made things much easier. I did another detailed list when I sold off almost everything in 2001 for a few years of backpacking. The list was mostly so family could locate and send me any hiking equipment I might have needed. These days I keep a running total in a spreadsheet that hasn't been "audited" in 7 years. Household & personal items are about 4,500 items, while business non-inventory assets are about 1,200 items (lots of tools). My business 'for sale' inventory of items numbers exactly 718 as of EOY 2021 (Tax Inventory).
Thanks for the video Matt, really enjoy hearing what you have to say and how your intentional living has shifted over the years. Keep up the great work 😊
As someone who is about to move into a new apartment and start living a more intentional lifestyle - THE URGE TO COUNT EVERY SINGLE THING that i pack is HUGE. ty for the great video!
I got discouraged when he talked about his two little bins of holiday decorations - we have 7 large bins of Christmas decorations! But, I love them all, they bring me joy!
Minimalism is about keeping just the things that have true value in our lives, not judging what others find important. I say GOOD FOR YOU for your Christmas collection that brings you joy! I love Christmas too, and getting to see other people's Christmas decorations is one of my favorite things about the holidays! I'm grateful to those who invest the time and energy to decorate, and consider it a gift to the community! ❤🎄☃
As a stats guy - I really appreciate the detail you went to. Its really insightful and i know a lot of people have similar amount of items to you guys. Thanks for spending the time

@MarieFrenette Also yes to the wisdom of not criticizing things that bring our partners joy!
😂 This was so fun to watch!
From the nerdy details of all the categories to the overall message of this video...
Thank you so much!
Your video, as always, has been the highlight of my week, already started counting! Cheers from Madrid!
The urge to count everything in my house now is so strong 😂 How long did this take you Matt? X
It personally took me severals days bits by bits .... but with no stress. I own an Airbnb flat that I rent this was useful too knowing what stuff I had. But I left aside food, toiletries items, papers ...
I love your curiosity. I’m so glad to have found a TH-camr that I can relate to. I love minimalism value. Thank you 🙏
Wow, it's SO COOL that you are able to count everything you own. There's no way I can count what I own - I don't even know where to start!
The cinematography in this video is absolutely fantastic and marvellous! I am currently watching this video and I'm enjoying it so much! Thank you!
You don’t *need* to count everything you own to be a minimalist
You don’t have to count if you don’t want to! If you can look at something and say, “I use this often and it makes my life better”, then that’s it.
I clicked on the Video, paused and started discussing with my friends "what defines as a thing" ...just a few seconds later Matt does the same :D
Awesome Experiment
Awesome that my favorite Tech TH-camr watches my favorite Minimalist TH-camr!
Hey Kilian! Schön dich hier zu sehen :D
du, hier? total unerwartet, aber nice :D
Seeing videos like this makes me realise how much stuff I actually have and don’t use - I am going to address it. Thank you for the inspiration Matt!
This was very informative, I loved the data and charts you used at the end... the storytelling and value was insane. Great video Matt! 😁
This thing about minimalism + your mind blowing video editing got me hooked!
This video is VERY relatable for Leah and I! 😂 I hate Christmas ornaments... she loves them.
this comment reads like a middle aged womans status on facebook
Levi, let’s have you and Leah do the count in your home. 😂 I can’t wait for that. 😂
@@cchampa17 I mean... you're not wrong honestly.
I was waiting for this video for 5 years. It did not disappoint.
I loved seeing this experiment. I don’t care about numbers BUT I do care about value brought by my items like you said and I’m so glad I have the things I do and that since minimizing I have realized having things that are high quality is important to me.
Easily one of my favorite experiment videos to date. Thanks Matt!
I did not ask myself why you were counting things. Seems perfectly reasonable to me 😂 love the video idea!
Happy late new year
I definitely agree with you. Being as minimal as you can gives you lots of freedom.
*Did anyone else think that if you counted the 70 holiday decorations as Nat's things, than she would technically have more stuff than you :-p*
I feel like you are having more fun making the videos and we are loving the content!
Matt had to do this for his home insurance application and just decided to make a minimalist video out of it 😂
Finally I’m encouraged to start counting. love the statistics and pie charts, thats what helped me get out of dept as well!
One of the best thing about dude is that he never takes credit for himself when he achieves something. He always respect us, the audience and his team, and he is polite in all his videos. We congratulate ourselves on this achievement more to come 💙💙💙💙
Hm h toh kya gam h ✌

Finally its here..
Stop copying this comment
Lmfao 😂 She doesn't mean it, this comment is just a copy pasta that some TH-camrs use to get more subs lol even Matt fell for this !!
I love your Honesty! And your gear is your business and your passion, so no guilt there. I just got to know a couple who lives in a former church because they love history and own 50'000 (!) books! So go for your passion.
What's good about being a minimalist is valuing what's truly important.
I really enjoyed this. The look and explanation, when you had to say that Nat had less stuff was awesome. Now we want to see Nat do the happy dance. 😁
I really enjoyed watching your misery 😁 This video is inspiring me to go through all my stuff and sell/donate everything I don't really use. Thanks Matt.
Cracking up at the justification between what is owned by the business and what is personal.
It never was a matter of numbers, it is a matter of utility and serving a logical purpose.
(slowly puts away his totally useless banana slicer)
Really wanna see Nat’s reaction when she found out she has less items!!!
He counted books as one thing??? Anyone moving knows that 300 books don’t weigh 1 book!
Tracy with the receipts. 👌🏻💯
this is my kind of thinking: not taking (esp.) numbers at face value and asking the "right" questions instead. Great comment!
Keep up the great work 😊
I would never 'why are you counting all your stuff' because this is just the kind of crazy shit I would do too.
As someone who is about to move into a new apartment and start living a more intentional lifestyle - THE URGE TO COUNT EVERY SINGLE THING that i pack is HUGE. ty for the great video!
From my experience, those hair ties end up of ALL OVER the house in such random places
I did counting every date that I lived

I got discouraged when he talked about his two little bins of holiday decorations - we have 7 large bins of Christmas decorations! But, I love them all, they bring me joy!
Minimalism is about keeping just the things that have true value in our lives, not judging what others find important. I say GOOD FOR YOU for your Christmas collection that brings you joy! I love Christmas too, and getting to see other people's Christmas decorations is one of my favorite things about the holidays! I'm grateful to those who invest the time and energy to decorate, and consider it a gift to the community! ❤🎄☃
I'm so sad that you didn't include Natalie's reaction to when you told her she had less stuff than you 😂
As a stats guy - I really appreciate the detail you went to. Its really insightful and i know a lot of people have similar amount of items to you guys. Thanks for spending the time
*When it comes to the world of investing, most people don't know where to start.fortunately, great investors of the past and present can provide us with guidance*
I'm so happy ☺️ my life is totally changed. I've been earning $10,250 returns from my $4,000 Investment every 13 days
I heard a lot of investing with Mr Lawrence Tom and how good he is, please how safe are the profit?
After watching so many TH-cam tutorial videos about trading I was still making losses untill Mr Lawrence Tom started managing my investment now, I make $6,800 weekly. God bless Mr Lawrence Tom . His been a blessing to my family.
My first investment with Mr Lawrence Tom gave me $24,300 and that has made me invest without the fear of losing, I got four of my friends that I referred to him and they are making profit just like me. May God bless Mr Lawrence Tom
I just sent him a message and he responded. Thanks a lot!
Your Christmas ornaments reminded me that you two might like the book The Cozy Minimalist. She's really good at handling the holidays without all the clutter stuff. Like why are you storing pinecones? You can find new ones next year, go for a hike near pine trees. Great video as usual.
Out of curiosity, did you find any areas where you could streamline what you own?
I know I own more now than I did last time I lived on my own, and that I keep buying more stuff, trying to find a balance of how I want my life to be now that I'm no longer a student and am no longer in a place of "waiting for my life to begin".
Also went from being a Fumio Sasaki minimalist to being more of a Marie Kondo minimalist, and that definitely brought about more stuff too
