  • When buying a respirator mask on Amazon, it’s tough to know you’re getting a good one. WSJ put eight N95 and KN95 masks to the test and found not all tested at the required 95% filtration efficiency. Here are experts’ tips for spotting a lesser quality mask. Photo illustration: Ryan Trefes

The best mask is the one that a person is willing to wear, and actually puts over their face (not chin). I like KN95s and KF94s. I still always wear a mask when I go out, or if someone visits. I have not caught Covid, so I must be picking out good quality masks.

Don't worry a few years or decades later, there will be another new pandemic, which will find this video very useful.
For example, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore, etc. have experienced the SARS pandemic during 2002~2003. There were lots of discussion, debate, research about mask wearing in last two decades. So when the Covid arrive, all those countries react quickly and no more unnecessary debate on mask wearing. They said the odors were from “adhesives and additives” used in the 3M manufacturing and storage process. All I know is, I could not tolerate the odor, and I was worried about harm to my lungs having that odor right up against my nose for hours at a time. For normal person, N95 mask is overkill. A real N95 mask is very uncomfortable to wear. A fake N95 or below standard N95 mask still give far better protection than normal surgical mask which have big gaps on the side and between the nose. The biggest problem is those people who wear cloth mask. They only block 10~20% of particles. Japan already try stop people wearing cloth mask recently, because many research found out cloth mask is almost useless. Yes, I agree Japan is very slow on this compare to other Asia countries, who have experience the SARS pandemic during 2002~2003.

Different testing methods will definitely have different results. I shuddered watching Aaron Collins putting on an N95. His method was grossly improper and could damage the mask and/or prevent a good fit. And by the way, any N95 will underperform if not sized and fitted correctly - and since they come in different sizes and shapes, the fact that one N95 did not perform will on Aaron's face is no indication of it being unsuitable, only that he should try a different size or style.
