Something is happening here-on college campuses, that is. But what do we make of protests that turn violent, like what we saw at UCLA or even some of the Columbia conflicts? In a wide-ranging interview with Ian Bremmer on GZERO World, Eboo Patel, founder of the nonprofit Interfaith America, talks about his work on hundreds of college campuses to find common ground. His core message is simple: "Cooperation is better than division."
Patel advocates for a shift in focus from confrontation to cooperation on campuses, suggesting that universities should foster environments of civil discourse. He proposes initiatives like teach-ins and dialogues to explore constructive solutions to complex issues. "I think the problem here, the thing that universities could control, which I think that they have gotten wrong in many cases over the course of the past five years, is the default mode has been set to confrontation, not cooperation."
It's true that finding common ground can be easier said than done when tensions are high. But as Patel points out, the majority of college campuses have been able to debate the Israel-Gaza war without the kind of chaos or violence we've seen on certain campuses. "The media, for good reasons, covers planes that crash and not planes that land," Patel explains.

1968 comparisons are a false equivalency. Hundreds of thousands of American soldiers were on the ground in Vietnam at the time and it was the first issue for a plurality of American voters if not a straight up majority of them. Nowadays Israel/Palestine is consistently polling as one of the lowest priority issues for voters down there with students loans and current COVID-19 policies, and no American soldiers are fighting in it.

Obviously those polls don’t reflect the sentiments of the students. The common theme in the protests are clear to average people.

Sure. Let's just forget about principles, values and human rights and the fact that hospitals are being bombed and children starved with tacit US approval.

    • @mikeincalifornia

Agreed. However one comparison with 1968 is valid I think, and that is that demonstrations in the street lead to conservative victories at the next election. The majority of Americans despised (and still despise) those who take to the streets, which is profoundly undemocratic and un-American, since in our democracy things are decided at the polls and not on the streets, which is mob rule. People hate it. So in 68 the response to the demonstrations was a resounding victory for Nixon. Two of them, actually 68 and 72, when he won 49 states. He even won California, twice, because of it. The demonstrations of the 60s resulted in the Repubs winning 5 of the 6 presidential elections between 68 and 88.

In many ways, what Mr. Patel was commenting on highlights how so many young people (as well as many adults) have not learned or use communication skills that help foster understanding and cooperation. His comments about fair game is spot on.

Patel's heart is in the right place and he has some good ideas. In order to allow open minded conversations in tough subjects, the extreme rhetorics and actions must be ruled out, or such conversations will inevitably be drowned out by loud noises. If the universities can even deal with occupations against their own rules and the law, how can we expect their "negotiation experts" to help save the world?

I wonder where in all of this the idea placed in kindergarten of " Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." got lost in teaching and why? Also I guess these protest leaders do not follow in the foot steps of Gandhi let alone the all more American Dr. Martin Luther King practice of Peaceful Protesting. I guess this is because of Social Media and or a continuation of what they think protests are as BLM and that era wasn't able to be mindful. As in some cases it might have been taken over by bad actors and or co-opted to do what another group wanted to do. Smells the same. Social media sucks

Maybe instead of comparing today’s student protest with the Vietnam war protesters of the sixties, it’s a movement more similar to the protests against apartheid in South Africa during the 80’s. The protests in the 80’s were successful in ending apartheid in South Africa.

Nope. There is no apartheid in Israel. West Bank is not a part of Israel and is administered by the Palestinian Authority. Unfortunately strict military measures are necessary on the part of Israel to ensure its security. Jordan and Egypt also ensure strict border control. The issue of possible crimes by IDF military in either Gaza and WB needs to be considered as well as the Palestinian militants’ possible crimes. But apartheid no. Otherwise how do Israeli Arabs, 2 million live with full enfranchisement in Israel proper.

I watched this last night on PBS (rerun?). I found it obnoxious and deeply flawed. Like the commenter below, I also found false equivalency, but not of Gaza protesters current and past. The false equivalency on this show is between university genocide protesters and supposed masses of Jewish students who feel uncomfortable, threatened, and victims of "antisemitism." This qualifies as a trope, a meme, and a misrepresentation. You might have asked the question of how real the accusations of antisemitism are. I suspect this is a diversionary tactic generated by AIPAC. It is too pat, and a sizable number of the protesters are Jewish.
The other problem I found with this show is that it tries to abstract the reason for the protests into an intellectual exercise that can only be properly discussed by argument and counterargument in furtherance of the purposes of higher education. There is mass murder and destruction taking place in Gaza, sponsored by the U.S. Treasury, the president and the State Department. Discussing genocide politely with Marquess of Queensberry rules to me seems obscene, a vulgarity that is the privilege of a society that has lost its soul. We will pay a very dear price for sponsoring genocide, something the polls of which we are so addicted have no value or meaning.
I likely won't watch this show again. I see one of the past "experts" interviewed was Thomas Friedman, who refers to people in the Mideast as parasitoid wasps and caterpillars. I long have realized that I shouldn't waste my time on TV, and instead should read more, be in nature, do more Tai Chi, Yoga and meditate. Thanks for inspiring me, or more accurately disinspiring me.

"Cooperation" without moral outrage is all fluff and little stuff. Let's cooperate across all sectors, ethnicities and barriers to stop the human stupidity that sees others as lessor and legitimate targets of destruction.
