This tells you how much DC cared about Green Lantern in the 90s. His life is irreparably damaged as a consequence of a Superman story.
Ocelotl Chimalpain Is that why anytime he showed up anywhere as GL after his death, numbers were up? That was the main reason Peter Tomasi who was the editor of GL back then, decided to bring the character back and offer the project to Geoff Johns. That era became the most successful time in Green Lantern publishing history, that was the reason the retarded 2011 film was even made. "Vocal minority" are people who grew up watching some cartoon from two decades ago, thinking that's all Green Lantern is or ever should be.
It’s ok, Geoff Johns used it to make something greater, to make Green Lantern legendary.

i´ve had those discussions before with John Stewart and Wally West fans,this is by far my fav rant about the subject haha mind you it´s ok,he truly loved the OG versions and did amazing things with them,but at the same time hurt the comtemporary versions,and diversity in DC comics,for a decade+ (see:JLU cartoon vs New 52 JL)
Rairiky How did he "hurt diversity"? John Stewart has never been the main Green Lantern or a major part of the Justice League except in one cartoon and Wally West is a white dude. Johns made Cyborg a founding JL member, and created two non-white Green Lanterns to replace Hal with. In his Doomsday Clock series, he made the new Rorschach black. In his Shazam run, he made the Wizard a black man and had the Marvel family be comprised of minorities. He previously made the JSA more diverse as well. Why would he do any of that if he doesn't like diversity. It goes without saying that Johns isn't a perfect writer, but I don't understand how making Hal and Barry the main Green Lantern and Flash again means he hurt diversity. We can agree to disagree whether Barry should've come back, but Hal needed to be redeemed.

Because god forbid they allow any new writers have a chance with any new ideas to try to break into the industry
Alan Moore touches on this at the end of his run on Miracle Man where after Miracle Man kills Kid Miracle Man, a certain small but passionate portion of humanity start dressing and looking like Kid Miracle and even claim that Kid Miracle was trying to stop Miracle Man from taking over the world as to make him appear good and justify their devotion. But the problem (as Sal has pointed out multiple times) is that Green Lantern will always be an ongoing book with no ending, so Sinestro will never truly stay dead. Even if they do your idea, Sinestro will just be revived and take over again.

I know it was a joke, but I would love to read a Superman/Green Lantern book about them going on badass space adventures. Why has this never happened? And if it has, where can I find it?
They must thing Superman is needed on Earth at all times, with him gone there would only be like 4 or so extremely experienced superhero teams back on Earth, including the Justice League and different iterations of it, the Justice Society, the Titans and even the Legion, not to mention about a handful of Superman-level metahumans, so, yeah, Earth needs him at all times...I guess.

The writer part of me immediately sees how exactly I would have done Hal's story in just three issues, without turning him into an evil person but still making a huge change for Kyle Rayner to come in and take over. Here's my pitch:
"Set in the aftermath of Coast City's destruction, Hal attempts to bring it back through the power of his ring and begins to relive his past life, while having conversations with people through hindsight. He speaks with his mother, his friends, and a former girlfriend named Jennifer from his college years but avoids his father. His mother and friends are the easiest to speak to. Hal recalls some of his best memories being with his mother during his childhood. Although she is proud of the man he has become, she wishes for him to settle down and raise a family. As for his friends, he recalls the good memories and comes to believe that the superheroes he has fought alongside with, like Oliver Queen, became his surrogate family, which his mother points out is only a substitute for what he might be truly desiring.
After making peace with his mother and friends, he is met by Jennifer, who brings back the regret he has in breaking up with her so suddenly after she helped him recover from his father's death, realizing that those feelings were never truly resolved. He imagines what their life would have been like, seeing an alternate reality where he is a father and husband, making him feel even more regret. However, she points out that if they hadn't broken up, he wouldn't have become Green Lantern. He responds that it did little for Coast City, but she tells him that dwelling on what-ifs never helps and that everyone must live with the consequences, no matter who made them. She forgives him and tells him to do the same for himself before vanishing, telling him her wish is to see him move on.
Finding the strength and will within, Hal finally confronts his father, who berates him for failing to save Coast City and Hal admits that it is his failure, that he can't bring back the dead or live in a fantasy world where everything is alright. He turns the tables on his father and calls him out on ignoring him as a child, or being there for him when he needed a father. Although his father refuses to acknowledge this, Hal forgives him and makes peace, just as the power in his ring runs out.
Afterwards, Hal is contacted by the Guardians, who order him to return to Oa and face disciplinary action. He accepts and is brought before the council, who acknowledge that Hal was going through mental stress and PTSD, so they won't imprison him. Instead, they decide to suspend him from Lantern duties for a little while, take his ring, and return him to Earth. Once there, he pays a visit to Jennifer but from afar, seeing that she has moved on, married, and has kids. He smiles at the family and decides to go back into the military. A little while later, he meets a woman and begins to date. When his suspension is up, Hal refuses the ring when it comes to him, having found peace.
In Los Angeles, Kyle Rayner finishes a date with his girlfiend, Alexandra DeWitt, and returns home to find the ring waiting for him, telling him that he has been chosen to become the new Green Lantern of Sector 2814."

There was a cool retcon in a Secret Files issue where Ganthet offered Guy the ring first. Guy tells Ganthet to F off so Ganthet ends up giving it to Kyle as he has no energy left

this was amazing,thank and love you guys. Oh about the story i´m closer to the ones that adore it,surethe ending is highly anti-climatic and the other lanterns are punching bags but i have a personal weakness on "heroes" that get so desperate that have almost psyco-breakdowns and you don´t know if keep supporting them or not,and at least i totally feel his plight
You know there's also a storyline called Emerald Fallout which talks about stuff that happened right after Emerald Twilight like it's in Guy Garnder issues I think it's 18-24 and it's basically just Guy Gardner, Wonder Woman and the Alan Scott Green Lantern wondering what happened to Hal and they do find out that the Green Lantern Corps and the guaridans are dead see Hal Jordan as Parallax and then they all get their asses kicked.
Sal's Guardian frustration is majestic. :p

Sneak preview of this weeks Back-Issues Emerald Twilight The Fall Of Hal Jordan greatest of ALL The Green Lanterns, even though we have, and will continue get more human Green Lanterns, Hal is the best, (sorry Guy, Kyle, and you too John) so much so that long after Hal's death "spoilers" he comes back and ushers in a new Ultra Super Mega Turbo golden age +9000, for the Green Lanterns, LOL sorry I could help myself :-)

This is definitely one of my favorite eps!
What people don't remember is that Green Lantern sales in the 90s weren't that great, and they did considerably better once Kyle Rayner was introduced. Hal Jordan wasn't as popular then, as he was after DC's entire hype machine got behind Green Lantern: Rebirth. Kyle Rayner was a popular character. If it was unfair to Hal Jordan fans what DC did in the 90s, I don't think that what DC (Geoff Johns) has done to Kyle Rayner since 2005 is that much better. Same goes for Wally West.
I came back to watch 31:20 again.
I understand that this channel is going to change over time but I don't know, I really preferred the old thumbnail format. Mostly because it was the three hosts recreating something from of the book (DC REBIRTH, RUNAWAYS, ONE MORE DAY, INFINITE CRISIS). If you guys aren't going to go back to that format I get it, but just the book and a red background doesn't appeal to my sensibilities. Again, I'm not bashing you. I just wanted to throw in my two cents.

Started reading the Geoff Johns run yesterday and was laughing thinking about this episode.
I love this story like how I love X-Cutioner's song in the sense that it's not great objectively but it's entertaining af to read and it leads to better things like Kyle Rayner (my favorite GL)

Sal could make a whole half hour episode talking about how much the guardians(expect Ganthet) suck and it would be awesome.
Having just read this, finally, I must say it works a lot more than I thought it would, based upon what I've heard in other places, based on this episode of comic pop, etc.. I hear the criticisms that suggest this fall should have taken place more gradually, I actually think I disagree. Knowing Hal, the brash fly boy that he is, the level of trauma involved in losing millions of people the way he does here, I actually buy it, especially the way it starts with the city construct and all of the psychological implications of the conversations he has with his dad, his mom, his high school girlfriend, all conversations that are essentially with himself. When all of that fails and falls apart, and he is, at that point, completely broken, the old adage really applies, don't corner a wounded animal, it's one of the worst things you can do and that's exactly what the guardians do when they appear and demand he submit himself for misusing his ring. Hal is at his most vulnerable and broken with the loss of coast city. When people are broken like that, it is most plausible that they will snap, even the best of us.
