Every degree can be worthless, every degree can be useful. JOB Experience is just as important as your degree. I truly belive job/work history/experience can make up for shitty grades/not a very standout degree.
I graduated with an Associate in General Studies. I do agree that GS isn’t a career degree but is worth getting into if your transferring to university. I don’t regret spending loans on it, I took so many transfer credits that help transfer to university. I also gotten my BSW and MSW afterwards so I’m very proud of myself. Sometimes it takes a while to know what field your interest in.
I left college after my freshman year, but have recently found out that thanks to some transferable high school credit, I have 75% of a gen studies degree, despite being a college drop out. It’s not what I want to major in, but I’ve also really been *genuinely* interested in pursuing psychology. I know both of those degrees don’t really get me much. I’m wondering if I might as well finish the general studies degree so at least I have a degree… but if it won’t help me to get a better job than my current restaurant position… is it worth finishing as long as I’m going back to school anyway?? At this point all of my peers are graduating and I just want to be able to say that I’m working towards something again. I’m also considering a possible double major in economics or management, just something that I can have if I can’t keep going with psychology. It’s so frustrating how you do more research and then somehow end up feeling more lost. Yes I have talked to my advisor. Right now I’m doing part time classes just to prove to myself I can go back to school.
If you are in a field or career and just need a Bachelors Degree to justify your position than a General Studies degree fits the bill! Also it’s like having a major in Psychology, History, Art History, Sociology, and Management Studies all rolled up in one to justify that you are educated😉😀👍🏾 You fill good about yourself😀 I make $100,000 per year as an Associate VP.
Also, if you changed majors several times during college, and now you just want to graudate and be done and have a degree, and don't want to start over (again) a general studies degree can be a lifesaver (at least you have a degree, in something!) so please don't be too hard on this field.
This is my story! Changed majors twice, moved out of state, now finishing as a transfer student at my new state college with general studies. I'll be able to get into the MSW program with my degree. Definitely will be worth it!
I got my Associate's degree and left school at 20. I got a job in computer programming and ended up working in CNC machining. I did that for about 10 years and went back to get my Bachelors in Gen Studies while I was working because my Alma Mater offered that online. Anywhere I go to work isn't going to care about that degree. It's going to be based on work experience. I'd never suggest starting school aiming for Gen Studies, but it will literally never hurt you.
General Studies is a perfect Degree when your college adds more classes than you can afford. I had an issue I went 6 years and falled a couple of classes and was just ready to graduate.
I am someone with an AA in General Studies in Land Resources. I originally started with the intentions of getting my BS in Natural Resource Management, but life had different plans for me. I couldn't afford to get my BS just yet, and my only option was to go to school for 5 to 6 years for a 4 year degree, or just get my associates. So, I got my associates. I am now working as a Consulting Utility Forester for a power company. It pays decent and I have a fair mix of field (outside work) and office work, and I am content with it. Some jobs may require a specific degree, but not all of them do. I wish I would have known that before going into college. Most jobs appreciate someone with a degree, and some experience. I guess what I am trying to say is, don't be too hard on yourself if you have a degree in general studies. You can go any direction you want eith it, it can only help you in the long run.
At my college the course catalog said that a General Studies degree was for people who want to be elementary school teachers. In other words, people who only have to be smarter than a fifth grader.
Tons of military officers have general studies degrees. When I was in, the common saying was that an enlisted man has to have knowledge that is 2 inches wide and a mile deep, but an officer has to be a mile wide and 2 inches deep.
You can take an associate in general studies and transfer to a four year college, taking chemistry, biology, and a Latin concentration, for example. I know someone who was accepted into med. school and changed to graduate school in the humanities for a pHd and got a college teaching job. In fact, the savings of the associate degree was wonderful. All those credits transferred to the 4 year college. You have to think and plan, but the BGS actually provides lots of room to create multiple avenues. In this case, clinical lab science, MD, Latin teacher/classics teacher. It's a highly respectable degree . . . if you do careful thought/planning.
My brother has a degree in mechanical engineering and general studies 😂 i don't know the exact story but he said he had a crappy advisor and kind of "accidentally" got the general studies degree with his mechanical engineering degree.
It does depend on the person because what if your working full time and going back to college to get a general bachelors degree to move up then your fine.
7:40 First: DO NOT GO INTO DEBT FOR A COLLEGE EDUCATION!!! “The barrower is Slave to the lender.” Second: Open source course and self taught skills although beneficial do not show as good as a BGS in your resume. Third: if a person wants to specialize but already have so many college credits and no degree getting a BGS and then an specialty at the master’s level may make more sense. My two cents for those who are mid-career/have associate’s degrees. I DO NOT recommend it for an 18 year old.
I know a girl who knew she wanted to be a lawyer since she was a little girl. I guess because you need a degree as a gateway before you can apply to law school, she got a degree in General Studies from Fordham. Then off to NYU for their patent law program. If people say you should have majored in engineering to go into patent law, easy, marry an engineer like she did.
I am in a general studies degree on the science tract for the SOLE purpose of going to grad school (PA school/medical school) and I chose this because it was the fastest way to go from military vet to college grad and fufill that bachelors requirement for admission. I wouldn’t recommend it in very many other situations
I was able to get an AA degree during hs for free. If you high school offers to pay for college classes I highly recommend it. It saved me thousands of dollars.
I actually think so if you're going for free or at a low cost. It's a good addition to a resume that applies to most jobs. Also, it buys time if you have parents that want you to go to college right after high school like me. You can in that time learn what you want to do.
Great video! I'm still probably gonna major it anyways LOL The good thing is I'm already earning my mid career pay as a Digital Marketing Manager with my Computer Information Systems Associates Degree. At this point I'm looking for the shortest and most cost efficient path to a bachelors where I can just roll over my credits. But yea maybe I'll "specialize" in something with it.
That’s a very good approach. I’m also getting a BGS because I’m mid career and a bachelors which is cost effective in using my previous credits and online delivery it makes sense. It won’t change my career or my life but it will give me an edge over other candidates for management roles. So you do you. Think for yourself
Thank you so much for this video. Since the beginning of my college journey I’ve always been in a defined major Business Marketing. But because my sucky advisor I will be graduating with a General Studies Degree with a minor in Marketing. And now I’m researching different jobs/careers that I can do with it 🤦🏾♀️
I got my associates in University Studies at.a JC (Emphasis in Math/Health Sceince and Business/Tech) Paid about 8-10grand in total over the span of two and a half years for tuition. I don't think it's the ideal degree to focus on but it helps when you apply for jobs and universities since it shows you do in fact have a degree.
I'm sure it's better than a general associates, but.. *clears throat.* No. Take up a trade school or something. I don't even care what major you aim for. I would've told past me to at least have a practical trade under my belt. If you aim high, but life throws surprises at you and disrupts your plans, then it will definitely come in handy.
By itself? gen studies is terrible. However, if you already have specialized skills, it could be a useful supplement. I work as a systems admin with a few industry standard certs. Gaining my associates in Gen studies has actually helped me get promoted faster and a decent pay bump. I think of it as a sort of "check in the box" degree that can open a lot of doors, depending on the field.
I'm currently a CS major, but I transferred some old credits and found I'm 3 credits from qualifying for a bachelors in General Studies. I'm considering taking this one class to at least have it. Seems worth the one class even if I'm delaying my CS degree a couple of months.
Hey middle aged guy here going back to school for my general studies associate. I’m already a licensed mechanic just hoping the degree can help me get into management . Also I want my kids to see me get a college degree.
Am in college for general studies how I look at it is flexibility u can get into any entry job and have opportunities in life I try to be versatile with this degree it’s a combination of everything but not great at everything it’s a opportunity am personally going to try high school teaching but with this degree if I don’t like it I can explore different jobs as well I didn’t want to go to college for just one thing and later in life lose a passion for it and be lucked out
I'm sorry but you think you can get into any entry level job? Jobs are specific they want you to do specific task(s) and when looking at your degree they say "hmm is what this person studied applicable to the tasks I want them to perform?" Or they just want to know if you are someone who they can teach easily by looking at your degree but that is for obviously lower paying jobs. But if you manage to get a job at say a power plant you can only go so high up before your barred from promotions because you don't have specified skills. This is the same for most other jobs. But then getting to education specifically highschool generally you'd be barred from STEM teaching because in those courses good schools usually want experience or a specific degree. Even for say a history teacher though you're at a disadvantage to a person who actually has a history degree same goes for like every other subject 🙂 as well though but you're not barred ofc. To summarize forgetting OP if you're a highschooler or even in college and trying to decide, don't pick this for whatever you want to do companies/schools etc. are looking at what you can do for them the less specific with that you are the less theyll know if you're good for the specific job you want.

@@TheTiyon you're welcome I genuinely just want to help, I understand your hesitatation to get into a specific major but just know if you try to take a piece of everything sometimes you just get nothing. I understand you may not care that you're degree may not do well in the work field because you don't care about money but most likely when you get out you will struggle for a job and end up being forced to do something you hate anyways. And just remember it's not all about being rich but having extra money will help you send your kids to college and give them a good life aswell as take care of your parents and give back to your country/community. I'm not going to try to persuade you to get another degree but maybe you can look into options of being able to get specialized skills on your resume the process of getting certifications may also help you find what you truly enjoy.
Am going to rethink it u don’t think a certification in any work field could complement or give me a higher chance as well but u right am going to view all the stuff my college of and put this towards something wouldn’t want to hinder myself in anyway
I’m studying business right now and I just want to graduate so I was considering a BS in general studies giving that I work full time and goto school full time. Currently working at a bank and I’m mentally tired 😫
This where Certifications and other Licensed Diploma. General Studies is made for Project Mangers more than anything. Project Manager is the most general job title a company has. So you can accompany that with any other studio. Get you a PM Certificate or maybe Graduate
I am about to get an Associate Degree in General studies. I am considering some other Liberal Arts type Degree as a BA. Maybe General Studies, but not sure. I will basically be getting a BA just to check off that box as I already work in IT and make a decent salary. I don't plan on working in any other field and getting CS Degree isn't necessary. I would also have to start all over again eventually to do exactly what I already do now.
Hey!please come up with a video on big data engineering and courses you need to take to pursue it because it sounds really interesting and youtube does not offer much videos..thank you for your other videos Keep up with the good work man!!
Aye Shane I’m confused on what major I should be looking into. Here’s what I want to do. I don’t want to binded to a specific area of field. I want to be able to suggest different pitches and ideas to people and profit from it and get acknowledged for it. Whether that be something to deal with tech, clothing ,a new service;etc. Pretty much I want to be the mastermind behind a project, but have others do the work;So what Major, degree, and career am I looking for.
That sounds interesting. Here, this video could help The BEST College Majors (How to choose the Perfect Major for YOU) th-cam.com/video/EVCw4Wf7wQw/w-d-xo.html
What a waste of money. My oldest daughter is not quite sure what she wants to study, so she is going to a community college first to explore her interests. This is a significantly more savvy move than getting a general studies degree.
Hi, I'm a high school student here in Spain, I know 6 langauges and I want to major in International Business, do you think it is a good career path? I love your channel by the way!
Hi Elena! I don't think that he can properly respond your question because this channel is more focused on the United States. However, I know that the situation in Spain is not as good for science and engineering majors as it's here in the States. I hope this may help. I'm sorry if I am not useful for you, but the situations in our countries are quite different, and even if I speak Spanish, it doesn't really help you because you are a polyglot, but at least your knowledge in languages should help you most careers.
My friend got a good job for with this degree at INTEL . BOEING and Intel accept this degree, but you have to apply for entry level at BOING . Sadly my friend died of COVI 8 months ago.
I have a general studies degree. Gen Ed degrees are worthless on their own. If you can't get into something specialized, you'll end up in shitty minimum wage part time jobs with no career potential.
love your videos can you please do a review of medical lab technologist or technician major or clinical lab technologist since youtube don’t have much videos of its review
I’m getting a gen studies degree because I’m going to a private college and during my senior year the Comp. sci classes were at a graduate level for an undergraduate degree. I can’t pass them and the deans won’t write them off. It’d take too much time to switch to another degree horizontally so I’m taking the loss and just getting a LAS GS degree. I’ll do the leg work to make it into the right field and later on it won’t matter what degree i have.
Are “general studies” and “interdisciplinary studies” the same thing? I earned both of those degrees at the undergraduate level, and I will be entering a PhD program in biomedical engineering this fall. I feel my brain is already in many different subjects lol!

My career field does not have a preference on a degree or GPA. You do not even need a degree; it just makes you more competitive when getting looked at for promotion.
Hey I'm planning to become an Electrical Engineer. Im currently in my community college doing and assosiates degree General Studies, (which count as basics) Once I'm done ill go to an university and start my career as an engineer. (Bacehlors) Did I make the best choice?
I did it because it was cheaper than attending 4 years straight in an university, thats why im doing basics in my community college (which comes with an assosiates in general studies)
Make sure your classes will transfer because engineering curriculum is totally different. See if you can get an associates degree in engineering science for cheap

@@flwrpwr5351 thanks it’s not many people that gives free knowledge like that it’s just I didn’t want to go for one thing and lose a passion for it one day it scares me everything I do in life I try to be versatile so I am good many things u know back up plans ik in today’s world as long as u know how to do job like say computer engineering u know u can learn that outside of the degree but u right it’s a cap for me if I continue this route but I don’t ask to be rich I mean I wouldn’t mind it but money isn’t everything to me I would like to be stable and have a job I love am 24 a retirement job would be nice
@@flwrpwr5351 i’m stuck in the same boat bro
I’m studying business right now and I just want to graduate so I was considering a BS in general studies giving that I work full time and goto school full time. Currently working at a bank and I’m mentally tired 😫
This is me !!! what did you end up doing ?
This where Certifications and other Licensed Diploma. General Studies is made for Project Mangers more than anything. Project Manager is the most general job title a company has. So you can accompany that with any other studio. Get you a PM Certificate or maybe Graduate
Thank you for this video! I was originally a international studies but had to switch to gs because of time and taking a semester off due to covid!
I took a General Arts Certificate but never majored in it. The degree is worth it if people want to go into teaching which is a declining career path.
Thanks for sharing that
I am about to get an Associate Degree in General studies.
This is the content I am looking for.
Hey!please come up with a video on big data engineering and courses you need to take to pursue it because it sounds really interesting and youtube does not offer much videos..thank you for your other videos
Keep up with the good work man!!
Thanks for the idea!
Here, this video could help

That’s a business major. Or you can just create a business idea see what happens and go from there.
Imagine if there was a doctorate for general studies...
"Hey look I am a doctor of being ok at everything" :)
Great content can you do a video for best military friendly college and best major for military personal/ transferable skills.
Thanks for your suggestion. Stay tuned for that
What a waste of money. My oldest daughter is not quite sure what she wants to study, so she is going to a community college first to explore her interests. This is a significantly more savvy move than getting a general studies degree.
My friend got a nice job with this degree at INTEL. BOEING and Intel accept this degree, but you to apply for entry level at BOEING.
Love these different angles and settings! I think that the jump cuts are unnecessary tho.
Thanks for the feedback Momin

Hi, I'm a high school student here in Spain, I know 6 langauges and I want to major in International Business, do you think it is a good career path? I love your channel by the way!
Thanks
@@ShaneHummus you didn’t even answer her question 😂
Please, dedicate one video to talk about the physics degree specifically, please.
I'll see what I could do Alexis
I love these videos. Could you do one on a organizational leadership degree? Thank you
Great suggestion! Noted Michael
Which degrees get a 1/10? If this doesn’t then what does?
I wish this video existed when I started out college 2014 😞
Why does he evaluate the value of degrees? That's fucking ridiculous.
How is it ridiculous?

Can you do a video on Bioinformatics? I'm thinking about an MS

I have a general studies degree. Gen Ed degrees are worthless on their own. If you can't get into something specialized, you'll end up in shitty minimum wage part time jobs with no career potential.
Do a video about Physics!

Please do a video on which degree is the best to work for a consultanting firm🙂

tbh get a Ph.D and go into academia or a masters and do social work
love your videos can you please do a review of medical lab technologist or technician major or clinical lab technologist since youtube don’t have much videos of its review
I'll put that on the list
I’m getting a gen studies degree because I’m going to a private college and during my senior year the Comp. sci classes were at a graduate level for an undergraduate degree. I can’t pass them and the deans won’t write them off. It’d take too much time to switch to another degree horizontally so I’m taking the loss and just getting a LAS GS degree. I’ll do the leg work to make it into the right field and later on it won’t matter what degree i have.
Can you do a video or short on a film degree? A friend of mine wants to do that and I'm curious how good it is.

Are “general studies” and “interdisciplinary studies” the same thing? I earned both of those degrees at the undergraduate level, and I will be entering a PhD program in biomedical engineering this fall. I feel my brain is already in many different subjects lol!
Yup, they're the same thing. Gotta ask though, how did you get into an BME Ph.D program with general degrees?
@@DC-ee9de By taking a vast majority of courses in STEM and getting significant research experiences from genomics to automotive safety. My undergrad experience was academically rough because I changed my major 4 times. Also I don’t know the exact career I should go to, but I have some ideas. That is why general studies is a better route to take, especially when I ran out of time to fulfill all the requirements for any traditional major. Hope this helps! 😃

(Bacehlors)
Did I make the best choice?
I did it because it was cheaper than attending 4 years straight in an university, thats why im doing basics in my community college (which comes with an assosiates in general studies)
Make sure your classes will transfer because engineering curriculum is totally different. See if you can get an associates degree in engineering science for cheap
You should rank all of the "studies" degrees 🤣🤣😂

Yes! Definitely.. That's coming up soon
