I prefer Glengoyne 21 year to any of the ones on here I've personally tried. Never had Angel's Envy or the second Scotch they tasted, but I kind of stopped trying new things after I tasted Glengoyne 21. It's also only $30 for 750ml of Glengoyne 10 at my local liquor store, making it perfect to stock up on for not much. I usually buy 2 bottles of Glengoyne 10, a bottle of Glengoyle 21, and a bottle of Maker's 46. Comes out to about $400, but I also don't have to buy whiskey for another year.

The 3 Bourbons are all extremely easy to find, very reasonably priced, and fantastic for starters ...scotch is a required taste and demands more homework. So if you just want to go out and get something awesome to sip without any effort: Bourbon. If you want to impress and find something really special: Scotch. To me, Bourbon tastes strong and rough, smokey and woody. Scotch tastes sophisticated and is harder to find but much more personalized when you do. Everyone likes Four Roses but very few can find that 1 go-to scotch

I too started with Scotch single malts and some Irish Whiskeys... and moved on to Bourbon. I find that a really good Scotch is still VERY enjoyable and high on my list of my favorite things. But, Bourbon has won my heart and is my current go-to for a Whiskey. Why, great question... its the combination of the smoke, the spice and the sweet that really get me going.
I loved the selections you chose from both categories... I NEED to find some of that Dalmore Cigar Malt to try.

Even with only watching the first few minutes of the video, I can safely say you're both right. To me, Bourbon is better than Scotch, when I'm in a Bourbon mood. The more whiskies I try, the more I realize that I like varous styles of whiskey in general. I do lean towards Scotch as an all time favorite. But Bourbon and Rye aren't far behind. They might tie for second place, or maybe Bourbon is in second place with Rye close behind in third place.

I''m all about American whiskeys, most of all higher- rye Kentucky bourbon. Love Heaven Hill with something approaching genuine affection. The statement "Why bourbon is better than scotch" though. Ooof. Exquisite hackery, my friend. Hows this for a follow-up... "Why sake is better than amaro." Or "Why tacos are better than Cuban sandwiches." Dig the ironic pinstripes, though.

I’m a scotch guy and have to agree bourbon is much more “in your face” and certainly sweet. I’m not a huge peat fan so the Islay scotches can be overbearing. That said, I just got back from Bardstown and picked up a few bourbons along the way. I’m going to learn to appreciate the drink and heritage. Unfortunately, I’m not an AE fan but willing to give it another shot. I do have a 4R’s and a KC12 I picked up. School’s open...

Angels Envy is great, but to me it's not your run of the mill type of bourbon. Four Roses Single Barrel is probably more along those lines to me, but I guess people have different pallets.
In terms of scotch I haven't really dove into Dalmore. I've had a 20 yr old Bruichladdich(?) and it was divine. There is such a vast array of scotches though and to me that's what wins the competition. You can get a smoother rich Achentoshan or a peaty smoky Ardbeg or even when you want to go cheaper you can get a fantastic well rounded Bowmore Legend or 10.

Try Bowmore 15 year Darkest Islay. it's sports a moderate peaty/smokey character, smooth, mellow and enticing but somewhat complex, and a sweetness due to sherry casking and of course the aging. Among three of my very best friends, Bowmore 15 Darkest Islay is the absolute favorite! Although the one who has been tasting whiskeys for possibly fifteen years or more has a couple of amazing but very expensive favorites such as 21-year Ardbeg (if I recall correctly, which is difficult under my whiskey review watching and oversampling circumstances) and 21 year Japanese Hibiki Harmony and other whiskeys I cannot afford. (Also LOOVE the Hibiki Harmony, the regular one is hard enough to get in Michigan, going from $85 to $120 or more per bottle in about 3 years.)
But the 15-year Bowmore is generally about $75 in Michigan, affordable once in awhile for a modest income. Possibly similar to the Erin that I've never tried.

Some distilleries still practice it but yeah most of the big boys across the pond have stopped (keyword being stopped, so at one point they were practicing it) I didn't know they had Scotch in the US lol. That's why I love Bourbon, there are rules they have to follow, but somehow each one (or most, excluding bottom shelf mixers) carries with it tons of complexity and character. Plus most Scotch (and Irish) use used barrels (most from Bourbon distilleries) for their aging, whereas Bourbon requires new white oak

okay so for some corrections as far as i know i dont think any companies in america make scotch they simply bottle it, in scotland it has to be bottled in scotland, and has to be made there as well. many other countries use scotlands rules for scotch as well. well except the bottling part but they see it as a scottish whiskey, a product of scotland.
any product from scotland can have coloring in it, i believe some of the products bottle in the states do as well.
many companies in scotland have stopped not all, dalmore being an example that still does, also here in canada we have worse rules, up to 9% things that arent whiskey or water can be added, coloring and flavoring, and many make things that are like vodka very neutral and then mix this with coloring and flavoring and some good whiskey, however you can also get super nice whiskies made here in canada that add nothing.
the practice boils down to the distilleries ethics, an interesting experiment is in order, acquire a single whiskey both colored and uncolored and figure out if flavor is impacted, if not then meh who cares, they are pandering to the fools who walk in and buy the darkest colored stuff or base off color.
just like some brands make really sharp and kinda harsh whiskies because some people think if it has that burn its better.
like some companies over age a whiskey to hit an age statement for branding.
as for old vs new barrels honestly i like how we do it in canada a little bit, no distinction is made, however as mentioned alot of our other laws suck. this is why our whiskey is sometimes called brown vodka. or whiskey flavored vodka. mostly just the alcohol content they can distill to(90%) and that we can distill multiple times and water it down in between distillations. in theory you can use this to use the harsher runs and its fine however lowering the maximum content allowed, and requiring again is specified on the bottle as double distilled. this would mean its still not necessarily a bad thing so brands can still use it without instantly getting shit on, but idk a sub category of a sub category.
just mix bourbons laws with canadas laws basically. any barrel any grain bill but has to be on the bottle, minimum 3 years, bourbons maximum alcohol content. maybe use the individual distillation rule of canada so a distiller can create blends before aging to see what he may want to try, also means easier to release a new blend. and youre done. along with requiring it to state if its been distilled multiple times, as well as filtered. thatd be the perfect whiskey laws and such. like if you look at some of canada's good whiskies they are really nice, its just most of them get fucked by the big guys whove been around forever, and some of our own shitty distillation laws with setting it up and selling it. then you have the issue of distribution.
honestly i wish a big american company would company into canada follow the rules just enough to not be illegal but dont distill as high and not use artificial flavoring. then people would get a good sample of canadian whiskey that would help get rid of shite brands, then smaller guys can grow, and people make money. win win.

    • @maltymission
      @maltymission 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Glenfiddich 15 is a very decent scotch to start your whisky exploration. The Glendronach is an absolute beast, and hard to find as it has been discontinued I believe. So, if you would find one, it probably will be a bit costly (easily + 130 euro's or dollars), but if you love sherried whiskies, Glendronach 12, 18 and 21 should be on your radar. however, if you're just getting into things, I would suggest trying Bunnahabhain 12, Benromach 10 or Highland Park 12: all affordable, yet very good whiskies. they might help you determine what you like or do't like in scotch, because there are so many different flavors and styles out there. If you're into peat and smoke: try Ardbeg 10 or Laphroaig 10 (both are love it or hate it whiskies). I would also suggest checking out whiskybase.com: a community driven website with +90000 whiskies and reviews (from Japanese to Scotch, bourbon, Irish,... the lot). as for bourbon, I'm still a noob, but I loved Elijah Craig Small Batch and the 1792 Woodford Reserve. A lot of people are raving about EH Taylor series, but as I live in Europe, it hasn't as of yet crossed my path
