It's delicious, and has a strong Islay flavor, but no peat.
I thought the same thing immediately. But, smoke doesn't come exclusively from peat fires, though. The barley (and any other grain wanted) can be dried by smoke from e.g. birch wood, too. The Laddie is certainly unpeated, but it has some very subtle smoke nevertheless. My favourite example for non-peated but still smoky flavour is Talisker 10.
Nah, there isn't anything bad about this video at all, it's great content and very enjoyable listening to. Like TheYarrrr mentioned, it's still kinda funny how he knows almost everything down to the tiniest detail but still takes The Laddie as a representation of Islay's smoky whisky profiles. Certainly, The Laddie is a little aggressive (comes with 50% ABV) when undiluted, but it certainly isn't agressively smoky. Anyone more familiar with Islay whiskies will easily second that. Actually the ice cream companies know the flavour is lessened when frozen so they make it super sweet. Eating Luke warm ice cream is like just cream with a load of sugar
Actually, it depends on the company and the flavour. I used to melt my ice cream a little a lot to enhance the overall taste but eat it before it melted completely. That makes it feel like an ice cream with a extra flavor coating. But, as I said, this doesn't work with all flavours. For example, strawberry tastes so sweet that I just puke it out, but mangos get a nice sultry texture this way. Also, you can use the melted ice cream to work with the toppings. Try adding some chocolate syrup to a vanilla ice cream but instead of eating it instantly, swirl it around in the bowl letting it melt a little so that it now feels like a chocolate doughnut hole but tastes like ice cream
@@LividLobster eating slightly melted ice cream is a thing. I had a friend (she passed from cancer a couple years ago, RIP Joyce), who loved slightly melted ice cream

In Scotland, people sometimes have water rather than ice. The difference is simply that the ice gradually melts as you drink it, so it has a varying amount of water (depending on how fast you drink) whereas a dash of water stays constant throughout the whole drink. And of course if you prefer it chilled or room temp. Water/ice drastically changes the taste of whikey (generally brings out sweeter flavours) so I always like to try a new one with and without ice and then decide.
came in here to learn how to order whiskey, saw the length of the video and felt sceptical about it 30 seconds in I couldn't stop watching. very informative.
my old drinking partner Ron used to take on occasion - depending on the malt `an angels teardrop` to `suffuse the oils` - this was many years ago, and I am so impressed to hear it again (in different words). I almost stopped this video but now I see true knowledge and appreciation.
Now i understand why people didn't chill their alcohol. I'm learning more about alcohol since i didn't have much access/freedom to try things before. Quite informative
I once froze a bottle of gin for my martinis. Freezing improves vodka in that it gains a very oily mouth feel, and I figured since gin IS a vodka, why not? I found out why not. A great martini requires some water dilution, which doesn't happen when the booze has been chilled below zero. You get a fiery, oily martini that tastes like crap. Similarly, with room temperature gin that is shaken, not stirred, you get a watered down, chilled drink where you barely taste the gin. Stirred, the fire of the gin is extinguished, the flavors all come through, and it is properly chilled for enjoyment.
Both of your whiskey videos helped me a lot. I'm working as a waiter/bartender and now I can kinda sound more professional when I'm serving customers. And also I can't wait to try the water trick on some of the finer whiskeys that are at the restaurant I'm working at. Cheers!

That Bruichladdich is unpeated. No smokeiness in it. A Lagavulin, Caol Ila or an Ardbeg would be a much better representation of an Islay whisky. Or maybe Laphroaig, if you dare. THAT'S peat!
The smoke explanation hit home. I've been a BBQ enthusiast for decades. I even helped teach a former professor of regional cuisine about the different flavor profiles of different species of wood. I agree, however there is nothing wrong with educating people and introduce them to new things or ways to enjoy them. We often don’t realize we may do something better if we expand our knowledge and be open to new things.
That introduction part... omfg so right!! It goes wrong when people try to argue instead of just listening and talking about (someone else's own opinion).

Don't forget in Kentucky U.S.A. we burn the inside of the aging barrels to create the unique flavor of Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey. Also it's called "Bourbon Whiskey" because the cities, that were major producers in Kentucky, were located in "Bourbon" county Kentucky, back in the old days.
Iam a bit confused, Islay whisky is indeed smokey, but I thought it was peated that adds the smokiness, however Bruichladdich bottle says it is UNPEATED, so how is it still smokey if it is unpeated.
@@bryanyachts no I got it now read up on it few days ago,it's just the flavours of the charred barrels that gives it smokiness in unpeated whisky's, peated are more heavily smokey,I actually bought the classic laddie n I've gotta say, I fuckin enjoyed it.

About the coffee analogy. If you want to see some real coffee that will wake you the hell up without being so bitter you can't taste normally for a week. Then check out the Mud Street Cafe in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. I had a cup of espresso there that was ridiculously powerful. And it came in what can only be described as a bowl with a handle.
Bitter coffee and the stigma behind coffee just being bitter all the time comes from years of people being subjected to badly made, old, poorly roasted coffee for years. I wholeheartedly believe that anyone can enjoy black coffee if it's made with fresh beans, roasted well, ground right before brew, measured properly and made well. Also, I don't believe you had an espresso if what your drink came in a "bowl with a handle". Espresso is served in a tiny cup, similar in size to a shot glass.
Hi from the UK. This guy is a top dude, and knows his stuff, he pronounces Glenfiddich properly. ....'ick not ...'itch. Come over share a dram anytime.
I have a question; I am a big jack Daniels man and I understand that using ice, waters it down but personally, I like my drinks cold. So what if I was to use a glass that has been in the freezer? would I still be able to enjoy my whiskey, without watering it down and still getting my cold drink?
Also, remember the rule he mentions... The way you like to drink it is the way you should drink it. If you like it chilled and mildly diluted, do the rocks thing
My uncle who taught me to drink whiskey said if you use rocks, pour a smaller amount and try to drink it within a few minutes. Or else whiskey rocks turns into whiskey and water.

As someone who can't handle straight whisky in any capacity, I love watering it down to get rid of the burn, then I can focus on the taste without it being a chore to drink.

Difficult to do while operating a lawnmower.

Why would anyone ice a fine whisky ?
Despises pretentiousness. Wears a great medallion.
my old drinking partner Ron used to take on occasion - depending on the malt `an angels teardrop` to `suffuse the oils` - this was many years ago, and I am so impressed to hear it again (in different words).
Cheers!

Or a cubano
Bitter coffee and the stigma behind coffee just being bitter all the time comes from years of people being subjected to badly made, old, poorly roasted coffee for years. I wholeheartedly believe that anyone can enjoy black coffee if it's made with fresh beans, roasted well, ground right before brew, measured properly and made well.
Also, I don't believe you had an espresso if what your drink came in a "bowl with a handle". Espresso is served in a tiny cup, similar in size to a shot glass.
