  • In this video, I try to answer all of the most frequently asked questions on this channel about the Boya BY-MM1 and the MM1+!
    1. Can you use the MM1+'s headphone input with DSLR cameras?
    2. Does the microphone allow you to listen to the audio while being played on a smartphone?
    3. Is the MM1 smaller than the MM1+?
    4. Are the shock mounts that different? Please compare.
    5. Could you compare the MM1's output coming out from your Canon M50 and your Panasonic GH5?
    6. Which one would I choose and why? MM1 or MM1+?
    7. Did you figure out why the headphone jack on the MM1+ doesn't work with DSLRs?
    8. Why does the BY-MM1 not work with my Nikon D3200?
    9. Can I use the MM1/MM1+ directly on my computer?

    The cable you need for using the mics on a PC/laptop still depends. Some PC/ laptop only have 1 jack slot for a combined headphone/mic so that is when you would need the TRRS (smartphone) end of the cable. If your PC has a dedicated line input for mics, then you would only need the normal TRS cable.

    Hi Mark! Thank you for this informative vlog on MM1+ it was mentioned that this works great with smartphones, and does that include iPhones as well? Do we need a separate TRS to TRRS jack for this to work also? (Aside from of course the lightning jack to 3.5mm cable 😁). Thanks and more power!

    • @bechoyvlog753

      Based on the other comments re connecting it to PC, I think it will really require the use of the TRS to TRRS cable for iphone usage.

    The mm1 is Cardioid, and the Mm1+ is Super-cardioid. Does that a noticeable difference on audio quality? Mm1+ is supposed to capture less "external" noise, and be more focused on the subject. Does it works like that at all?

    Hi Mark, thanks for the videos. Can you please test if the MM1 will fit in the new shock mount of the MM1+ ? Thanks. I would prefer a cardioid of the old but the new shock mount looks much better so could order that separate. Don't care for the audio outlet as I can get that from a splitter anyway if I needed it.

      Hi, Chris, I'll test it out for you but you're gonna have to subscribe first! Haha! Just kidding! Yes, the shock mount of the MM1+ fits on the MM1 with no problem! I actually use the MM1+'s shock mount for the MM1 because of how nicely improved it is!

    Insightful content there dude. Maybe I hear wrongly or stuff but around 4:45 did you mean the MM1 or the MM1+ for its preamps are too loud? My guess may be the MM1 instead cause I do notice it does pick up sound much louder here.

    Thank you so much for the video! Which of these 2 mics do you think is better for voice recording (plugged into a Zoom H1n)? I'm thinking of getting the MM1 but if the MM1+ does offer higher audio quality, I'm willing to pay the higher price.

    • @markfriday
      @markfriday  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey, Son! Glad that you asked this question because I literally tried both my MM1 and MM1+ on my good old trusty Zoom H1N and I came to a very good non-scientific conclusion! With the MM1 combo, I got a more cleaner sound because I was able to lower the H1N's gain by a large margin, while the MM1+ sounded a little more crispier/Rode micro-ish kind of sound (because I own the Videomicro too so I recognize its sound). Both were good but I liked the MM1 more. I would only use the MM1+ combo if I were to boom it over my head, therefore I can lower the gain too because the source (me) is very close. Hope this helps! Please subscribe for more content like this! Take care!

      Hi, Phil, yes, it does! It acts somewhat like a Y-splitter, splitting earphones and microphones out into different ports! You're using the MM1, right? The only downside is that you lose the ability to plug in earphones so you will absolutely love the MM1+!

    Hi. I connected my Boya BY-MM1 mic to my Samson S20. I can record audio but I have to unplug the mic in order to hear playback audio. Unplugging the mic after each recording is impracticle and makes the mic unusable. I know you said that I can't listen to audio while recording, but do I have to unplug the mic each time to hear playback or is there a workaround? I saw a lot of TH-cam reviews on the MM1 and none (except yours) mentioned this problem. Unfortunately I found your video after purchasing the mic. Thanks!

      You need adapter TRRS to mic+headphone. Then you connect Boya with TRS cable to one “leg“ and headphone to another.

    from the sound of it, there is no direct monitor from the BOYA MM1+;
    it sounds more like a basic splitter built into the device, thats why it doesn't work on the camera/DSLRs due to them having a dedicated mic jack (not headphone+mic jack)

    SO I just got the boya MM1 microphone, I attactch it to my phone , there is insanely loud hissing noise , then I attached it to my PC and the hissing is there too even when I use noise suppression the hissing just won't go away.

    • @markfriday
      @markfriday  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, BongRadar! Had that issue before too and there's a very easy fix to it! Let me explain, Your PC is on auto-gain mode, so it's constantly seeking for an audio source, so you will need to download a software that you can manually set gain levels so that it doesn't keep "sound hunting". Audacity and Audition are my favourites.

      If both then you're better off with the MM1+. It may sound like I'm being biased, but I really like the sound of the MM1+ when using it with smartphones over the old MM1. The sound sounds a bit more "managed" even if you don't do so much post processing, you can get a quite crispy sound, but when I tried to use the MM1 with my Sony Xperia, it kept on clipping (peaking) and it would try to correct itself by lowering the gain but then after a few seconds, it would do it all over again and peak again. Sorry for rambling! Bottom line is, go for the MM1+! Hope this helps!

  • @sbozinovic
    @sbozinovic 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Here's what I think... Headphone out on the mm1+ is just a pass through that allows you to use your headphones with the mm1+ connected to your phone. Otherwise you'd have to disconnect the mic whenever you wanted to use your headphones.
    Btw, you cannot monitor the audio as it is recorded when you use phone's internal microphone either.
    The similar is with the dslr. Usually there are separate input for the mic and output for the headphones. So the camera itself doesn't output audio through mic jack, hence the trrs to trs jack that is included with the mm1+ microphone.

    • @sbozinovic
      @sbozinovic 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Let's face it, mm1+ is low end microphone and mostly oriented to phonegraphers (phone videographers 😉). I chose it because I needed cheap backup mic and because of it's supercardioid pattern (which was kind of a mistake but...). The fact that it was a newer and (supposedly) better version of mm1 did have some influence... but it's like m1 and m1 pro lavaliers... As Mark said, if you don't need the extras (which are mostly phone oriented in this price range) you might be better of with the old and "battle tested" version.

    • @markfriday

      I agree with you! Maybe they really targeted the smartphone users for this one because of the sudden need of content creation tools at this season where a lot of people are resorting to having to work from home, maybe having to use their smartphone a lot more than cameras because of ease of use or simply because they have no camera. By the way, I found out a way to monitor audio using smartphones! I am making a video on it right now!
