I always get a bad feeling when devs talk too much, show too much art, and dont show enough gameplay.

We pretty much know there will be,
* Season passes (std and prm)
* In-game Store
* Currency packs that are just shy of season pass costs.
* Repetitive challenges for XP
idk, thinking back to Funcoms first big MMO; Anarchy Online in its olden days it seems iif they would take the subscription route and people would actually go for that, they could well re-establish something akin to the MMO glory days of old.
Just have to find people willing to invest in the game over a longer period in order to let short-sighted business methods fall obviously short, but sadly that's a pattern that appears hard to replicate nowadays.

Conan Exiles is out so you know what to expect from dune (but may in a MMO scale). The game got insane amount of (free) content over the years but never received any hype somehow. Will never really understand what went wrong because it has decent tons of hours of PvE or PvPvE content.
@@immatoll4375I feel like it was fun but what I always saw was more contention with Funcom than the game. Bugs are not being patched, updates breaking more and nothing being worked on, communication was meh. I did like Conan but came across a lot of bugs. Also, their store rotation was hated from what I could see from a lot of builders because of how they released packs and frequency.
I am very interested in this but will wait for release because it is a persistent world and they had issues with updates without being an MMO in conan.
Agreed. My problem with a lot of games these days is that devs are trying to make games into movies. Call me weird, but I like my games to be games and movies to be movies. Don't get me wrong, storytelling makes a great game, but sometimes I just wanna play a game, not watch endless cutscenes.

Why don't y'all just sign up for the beta. It's free. You can then see what it'll look like. It's also closed beta. So it's a few months away if not till next year. They aren't ready to show off anything or too much. They are wanting to invite players to play the beta and give feedback.
It isn't about being pessimistic or optimistic. Just take it all with a grain of salt and hell you can get access to the beta.

That's one thing SOE did very well with Star Wars Galaxies before they ruined that game, was good for a time as an MMO with so many different professions in-game it required multiple people to craft things, or you had people who were 100% dedicated to crafting. Something like that would be interesting, where it's complex and not just easy-mode. If you're doing combat and looting, you'll be prepared to share some of your loot with the person you have crafting etc, or pay handsomely, I remember getting weapons better than other people based on the rarity of the loot so yeah, make it complex! Game had scale too!!!

Does seem like they do have a lot more story than regular survival games so if they did anything will prob show up in small dialogue but they don’t have as much of a stage to push some goofy stuff like story focused games they usually work in tangent with. So maybe it won’t be all bad but who knows

They've explained the blueprint system and the "deep desert" full PVP area. The storm wipes all player structures and changes the landscape every week. Blueprints allow you to rush out on reset day and immediately drop a base down. You don't waste hours building from scratch.
Funcom's games were never the most popular but they have made two of the most interesting MMOs I've ever played - Anarchy Online and The Secret World. No handholding, unique gameplay, and great writing. I'm tentatively excited for this.
apparently i tried their Age of Conan on release and it was worst MMO i played in my life... They cant get back my trust again
It is simpler than it sounds. Just give every faction a predetermined region or regions. And you can go into enemy territory with and without permission. And there are a set of missions, legal and ilegal, that you can do in such enemy territory, like transporting cargo, capturing criminals, stealing, destroying, assassination, etc. But as long as you stay in such place, you start winning stars or karma like in GTA (specially if you went there without permission).
And at the end of each season (3 months) the regions are rearranged depending on a point system based on all successfull missions and other stuff achieved by each faction.
The winner will have the biggest region the next three months, increasing their wealth, but less space to invade and more space to be invaded by others (creating a balance).
All that stuff just works.

yeah I like this idea. I want to have the choice between fremen, atreides or harkonnen. If we cannot choose factions or are limited to the factions within the fremen, that will be very lame. Arrakis is obviously the main stage, but if we don't have players on all sides of the war, it won't feel MMO.
Could even have the emperor as dungeon master, deploying sardukar just to make the spice flow extra spicy

Funcom, the company that pulled of Anarchy Online, a game that I modded and loved for it's visuals, depth and feel. Funcom wasted 15 years in weird spaces and now it seems that they are now going back to their Sci-Fi roots, where it began in the very early 2000's. These devs where barely newborns when I was involved with Funcom; I'm hoping that they can pull it off, and if the vibe is there, they will pull it off.
I wish "The Secret World" or whatever was a hell of a lot more polished than what it was. It was relatively fun and engaging, and leaned HARD into Lovecraftian lore but it just felt like it didn't have staying power in terms of how each weapon time acted.
@@codynoth4183 same here. Game itself was cool, story was amazing and quests were well done, yet gameplay was terrible. and that comes from someone who played the thing on alpha and after on release.
Would be awesome if they do allow people to make their own factions, but make it insanely expensive, like you need 50+ players to pool their resources for months to afford it.
Then there won't be a huge number of no name guilds, and faction wars will actually be a big deal, like in EVE, but it sounds like this won't happen.

MMO, MMO's are cool, and really its the main thing I play (Forms of classic wow) but I just feel like sometimes the worldbuilding and story telling is damaged by having to deal with every players actions changing the story, watering things down a lot. thoughts?
then dont have player agency to change the story. its not hard to have a solid story and world building, its just most companies are incapable or unwilling.
Funcom is also the developers of Anarchy Online, big scale game, was very fun, and they are still running. so i am looking forward to see what all they do with this game!

The Sting Dune version made me read Dune. And I now have first 3 books of Dune in hard back. This venture of making Dune and MMO, is crazy hard. This is going to be so scrutinized, by fans and everyone watching the movies. I would do a whole new world that would be way easier than building Arakis.
Its gonna be hard balancing stuff especially if they stay true to the shields/laser weaponry atomic reaction, you could easily kill anyone
@4:55 when Funcom is mentioned, having said that they are leading parts of the developments of the MMORPG you can use previous title like Anarchy Online & its expansions for references of world development, Character story... each to their own, with Unreal Engine 5, it could be the key detail for funcom to develop AO into the game they wanted with the story & setting of Dune
It's Funcom and it's on Unreal Engine... It's going to be Conan Exiles "MMO" reskinned for Dune.
Funcoms previous MMOs like Age of Conan had a lot of potential and were very popular for a while.
Age of Conan at release posed as a credible competitor to WoW for a while after release.
However Funcom failed to support the game properly long term and only ended up releasing a single expansion for it.
The only thing I know and remember about Dune is that part in the old original movie with the 'box that hurts a lot' where the main character put his hand in it and winced a bunch before getting approval or something? I always found it hilarious and it stuck with me.

To anyone who loves Dune for the "Philosophical Future Sci-Fi" Asmon mentioned, the Red Rising series by Pierce Brown is amazing for the same reason. I'd absolutely recommend it.
Funcom can and did produce good games, TSW (MMO with best quests ever), Anarchy Online (MMO), Connan Exiles (survival), Age of Connan (MMO)... and they have a decent track record of being faithful to the source (as medium permits). Too early, but I'm carefully optimistic about this one (but still not preordering in any case ;)).

it would be cool if players cold put bounty on other players estimulating the pvp , and that if playes could do a independent guild large enough they could try take down the vanila factions or other player made groups . like with large wars and siege mechanics
the books are kinda hard to visualize because a lot of the contents are internal monologues and thoughts. they didnt really describe physical sizes of things. just implied most of the time. they're probably basing the gameon the film, because at least the films, you already have a visual base of style and looks.
That reminds me of the sand worm fleshlight at Bad Dragon. Such a sight.
they made the secret world and conan exiles, so they are the only ones I could see actually taking on this project and getting somewhere with it, but I wouldnt count on it being great day 1
The blueprint system will mainly be used as a time saver. You blueprint to build a base you don't want to have to build again and for people who don't want to waste time building in general.
I like that the Gameplay trailer, was more trailer than gameplay. It looks fun, potentially it could be good. But I want to see more before I’d put any time into it.

Well, it's Funcom. We really need to play for ourselves after disasters like Age of Conan, Secret World and, at least in the beginning, Conan Exiles.
And Joel Bylos is probably the only remaining Funcom developer who has been there from the beginning of each of them.
I'm pretty pumped for this game. As a player of Anarchy Online for 22 years, I sort of imagine this as Anarchy Online 2.

That's what I like when coming home from work. More work to do, gathering things and building things, to gather more things to build prettier things. All this work is gonna be so great to do, can't wait to have a list with all the work that I need to do everyday when playing my game of work.

i dont think people understand that half of the talk during the first part was directed to the movies, it's a interview with the people working on all the dune projects both movies and the game, it's basically a ad for unreal engine showing off that it works for movies and games

They made Conan Exiles which I had a blast with b4 they changed the Journeysystem, im excited for this too even if I have no idea bout Dune

I remember the AoC body physics on release. I think the devs took the old term "sweater hamsters" too literally for the female characters. I have this on my Steam wishlist, but after pre-ordering AoC I will be watching some streams before bothering with this.
Didn't know before but since these devs made Conan Exiles I'm more excited in terms of atmosphere and immersion since I think they did very well with that game if they're going similar style with that one. The combat might be hit or miss but they definitely seem to be bringing in some utility mechanics from CE

As a conan exile player since like 6 years now on and off I've had this on my wish list since the day it was able to be wish listed lmao conan was such a great game with soooooo so many problems and things that could have made that game the best thing ever yet I still had an amazing time on it with over 1.5k hrs played but it still makes me worried about this. God Funcom please pull this off
It is the perfect setting for a open world pvp mmo survival. I will say they better add more creatures and stuff that are trying to kill you. The desert in dune, everything wants you dead. The movies don't really do a good job of showing anything other than the sandworms.
The only thing I knew about dune was Dune 2 battle for Arrakis kind of cool seeing all this new stuff these days.

The unique house idea might come through the game if you can create independent mercenary groups (instead of being hard aligned with a specific house)

if I get to fly one of the insect planes, and not some forced path I mean actually fly it, I don't care how bad the graphics are. Thropters are so much fun to play with even if done a bit poorly but they better make the flappy planes good XD I love them as much as I love trolling games for bad fishing mechanics. If it's open pvp, meaning players can fight you anywhere, I might eventually drop it but getting to fly around would certainly keep me around much longer. edit: I'm going to enjoy this game
Greafing is going to be a major problem if they are not on top of things. Faction PvP should have great rewards for participants both those who have high and low tech progression and to some extent skill as high participation is critical to keep it alive and relevant. PVE battles would also be important like a vehicle raid on a convoy, harvester etc as many are not interested or flat out hate PvP.
It's intrinsically hard to create engaging environment for a sprawling MMO when your main landscape is endless deserts.
Their reimagining of the sand worms is atrocious.
FunCom already did Conan Exiles - an amazing pve/pvp survival game. I can see DUNE to be at least on the same lvl and that would be amazing. Also, Joel is hard fan of Conan and Dune... like.. REALLY HARD FAN

Yesss I was looking for a comment mentioning that game. The environment and the little experiences like seeing distant threats approaching through binoculars or stumbling upon a man made burrow in the middle of the desert are great references for what I would love to see in this game. Just the atmosphere overall is so good I almost wish it was that studio making it. If you get out of the car and run across the desert it could easily feel like you’re a scavenging fremen on Arrakis.

I agree witht he faction part. Ive said for a while since last oasis. Mmo survival needs to focus on player interaction and player led systems. The largest most powerful clan should be appointed as head of the planet by the emperor. They get a flat bonus to respurces and they can savrifice thes ebonuses to other clans. So like +40% to spice production. And they csn give min 10% to another clan. And the Freman clans can have soemthing similar. Like better knives and the main clans who are the best at protecting spice even. My biggest concern is their reference ti conan exiles right after he said he wants to drink blood. Because theyve crapped on conan pvp system
I am actually hyped for this i feel like they are starting to want competing against star wars in a sense but a long way ofc. This director of the game seem straightforward and nothing weird around it i hope it can capture the books / movies.

Conan Exiles was one of my favorite survival games, what really held the game back was the multiplayer servers being riddled with both instability and cheaters.
Yeahh I really hope one guild doesn't just run a server then the server dies...
If they implement and improve upon some of the social and crafting elements from SWG this could be epic.

35:15 if your base gets destroyed by the Worm or something else, you wont be needing to rebuild your base from scratch. which i think is nice.. would be anoying to have to rebuild the perfect base you built all the time..
I love eve online the scope of that game is massive i dont think any other sandbox game comes close to what eve online offers
what im seeing is that for realism type graphics it looks amazing, but a lot of people dont like that it is realistic style.

The fact that they didn't show longer than a split second of combat in the "gameplay" trailer, should be worrying.
This game wont feel like dune after 3 days when the desert is filled with everyone making their own base looking scifi, it will lose all the feeling of being lost in the arid desert
It's kind of frustrating that Asmon is the type of person that is not interested in the creative process of making something, but at the same time it is nice to see someone have a different opinion. In the end though, this types of videos are only meant for those who want know behind the scenes information and that's it.
Coming from the book perspective, I'm having a hard time seeing how this translates. It seems like you'd have to break it up by say, Freman, Bene jeserit, and Tlylaxu. Then adopt buffs from each faction. Even then, to me it it sound like ark in a dune skin suite. I'm highly skeptical.
Looked alright, the game play loop will determine my interest ultimately. I'm cool with the crafting and basebuilding. What happens beyond that will really determine the potential greatness of the game.

As long as PvP isn't mandatory and there is enough PvE to balance it out. Sometimes I just want to chill and not worry about other players, other times I want the challenge other players can provide.

The bio diversity of arrakis is actually surprisingly large, and doesn’t just consist of the sandworms. And it all plays a part in the story and narrative. I just hope they truly represent the dune universe as it is in the books as well as the movies.
Them working on this is why they haven't fixed the Delving Bench bug on the Isle of Siptah.
