I always plant mine directly into the ground and cover to stop some of our weather getting to them and when they emerge, I uncover them. Garlic in cell trays do produce massive root systems and when they pushed out they get air pruined, onions setts do okay in cells. ♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.
Planting my garlic at some point this week. Going to have to use trays for the first time as I've not prepared any beds for it to go in yet, would normally grow directly in the ground. The garlic I grew was a bit pants this year, so starting again with all newly bought cloves too. Fingers crossed for good harvests for us all next year.
Great video! Got my garlic planted out over the weekend. Emptied the potato bed, popped them in, watered, and covered with a loose layer of leaves to protect from any ice/freezing. Fingers crossed that they will be much better than this year’s garlic! 🤓
A lot of gardeners in the UK seem to start garlic and want green shoots before planting, which I wanted to ask about. In Canada, the prevailing advice I got from garlic farms is that they've found it's better to plant later than earlier for bigger bulbs, so the ground is not super warm, in order to decrease the chances of getting a lot of green growth on top before winter. We want just a bit of roots to start growing, and ideally no green growth. As low temps/snow can kill off the green growth, and the clove has to restart sprouting again in spring which takes energy away from the bulb. We do get chillier winters and snow cover than in the UK, so usually green growth does get killed off. If we're lucky and get a milder winter, the spring growth starts off earlier than usual in Feb/March and doesn't get killed off, though they do look worse for wear. Fertilize twice, in early spring with a balanced fert, and 2 months later, with P,K heavy ferts like powerbloom. This year was like that - my bigger garlic cloves are about as big as your elephant garlic clove.
Hi Mark, I always get rust onbmy garlic every year but, i do blend it and freeze too 😊 great video, the elephant garlic is huge! Will be interesting to see how.your 3 method of growing garlic work out. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊
I planted my garlic today too! 4 buckets with 4 in each, 8 more in pots for planting out later. Last year I planted direct in the ground and had a total crop failure. I blame the autumn wet. So it's back to buckets this year. Starting some in pots is an experiment for me, never tried that way before.
Phew! Good to hear someone else doing 4 per bucket. I was just kind of guessing the spacing looked ok. It was so wet last Autumn and over the Winter I’m surprised mine survived. Saying that looking at the state of it if they’d rotted that might have been for the best 😂
First time growing garlic for me this year, and I'm trying it 3 different ways too, because I'm anticipating another winter like last year where it just doesn't stop raining! 😭 I've got some in a raised bed, some in the polytunnel, and a few in some pots outside, so I should get something from at least one of those methods! 🤞
I was thinking about putting the ones I have in the buckets in the polytunnel as well. I hope the Winter isn’t as bad this year with the wet but I’ve got a strange feeling it will be 👍🌱👍
Not much to report on that front I’m afraid Barry. I think the official sign over is supposed to happen towards the end of this month or possible early December. Will be keeping my eyes peeled for any info 👍🌱👍
I tried growing some garlic last year. Just simply planting a couple of cloves in the border (from store-bought garlic). They seemed to sprout (although they do this in my cupboard after some time anyway) but I left them alone. Fast-forward to the Spring - absolutely nothing. No idea if it was pests or too much rain/not enough rain. Your vid is a reminder for me to have another go as I do cook a lot with garlic. As an aside, I know garlic likes the cold initially (hence planting before Winter), but do you know of any way to "fool" the garlic using a fridge before moving to the outside in the Spring?
I’ve tried it once before using the freezer but wasn’t too successful. Just popped them in the freezer overnight and planted them the next day. In theory it replicates a frost which causes the clove the grow a bulb of individual cloves. If it’s doesn’t get cold enough you’ll end up with one bit ball of garlic. It’s not a disaster as it’s still usable but better to have the cloves 👍🌱👍
Can you ever have too many pants 😂😂😂 Edit - oops meant to say plants but thought I’d leave it as pants as you can never have too many of those either 😂😂😂

I put mine in trays as well but that’s to buy more time because I’m never sure where I’m going to put it. Too many plants, not enough space🤣

Well it’ll be interesting to see the results hun 🩷
