Great harvest Mark. May have even been better without the awful slug invasion. I think they've done relly well considering! I grew Japanese toughball onions from seed and I harvested them about 4 weeks ago. Wow! They are fantastic. So pleased with them. I am so pleased I have just sown more seed for a harvest next year. They are just germinating. Happy gardening 🙂
I did not know Steve but have watched lots of his u tube. I hear him mentioned a lot! you are the only one that has taken his advice on lifting onions. God bless you.🥰
Looking crackin Mark and I think sets are fine, but if time and space aren’t an issue for people then seed may be the choice. I use sets for bulbing if I’m late. Steve was a fantastic and super helpful person, still missed and always will be. Have a super week, Ali ☁️🇨🇦
I pulled my onions last week with similar results. There's been a strange bright thing in the sky today so I've got them laid outside. My Bedfordshire champion have been rubbish this year.
At least we’ve had one thing do well this year despite the best efforts of the slugs and weather. No idea what that thing was in the sky today. Think it might be what folk down south call the sun 😂😂😂
I grow the Senshyu onions from seeds over winter each year and normally harvest in June. This year, like you they were late, and i harvested at the end of July. I am doing them again this winter as well as Toughball, which were recommended by Steve at the seaside garden and allotment.
Great video again Mark! My onions were from sets and they're a right mixed bag, some look awesome and some have never moved at all. Just typical of this year's weirdness! When you say Boxing Day onions, did you germinate and keep them indoors for a while, or just in the greenhouse? I'll go back and watch your video on it when I get a chance, but I'm starting to think about next year and trying to weigh up sets vs seeds and cost vs space.
Hi Mark, I watched and still go back to watch Steve at greenside up , its good to see people take notice of his know how , I too grow senshyu overwintering onions but I grow mine from seed and love them I'm trying Bedfordshire champion for the first time this year and there doing ok , keep up the good work mate
Thanks Jazqui. The weather has been doing its best to confuse us again. We've had the strong winds, then beautiful sunshine over the weekend and now thunderstorms this morning. 👍🌱👍
We had planted Over winter "Radar" onion sets and they have been great with some very large onions (Plot 82) and the Jerome shallots were a success as well. The vertical planting of the courgette's was successful, kept them off the ground and allowed more to be planted in the same area. Nip up to Plot 82 for a look, dont mind if you go in...😀
Hi Mark, lovely harvest of onions! Really good size too. I've grown ailsa craig from seed, sown on Boxing Day & they are a mixed size like your onions but, I have huge ones too. I grew from seed last year too for the first time and the red karmen were a great success but this year, not so good. Maybe this, weather we have all endured this year could be the reason. I got fed up with my sets bolting so, best decision growing from seed. 😊 Bedfordshire champion onions, are fab. Many try them for next season. Great video, thanks for sharing and take care 😊😊
Thanks Christine. Looks like the weather has been kind to the onions this year unlike a lot of other things. Deffo give Bedfordshire Champion a go next year, they’re fab 👍🌱👍
I’ve grown a few ‘Senshyu Yellow have been my best or Radar, Red Winter & Electric always bolt so not bothering next year. Going to give long red Florence or lilia spring onion a go which apparently can be left to bulb up. Never grown onions from seed so again trying for the next season. I’m also doing some Zebrunne Shallots. Good ole Steve 🌱
Planted radar and snowball Sets in early October. All the snowball bolted and I had to ditch the lot. Radar have fared better and are drying nicely in the poly tunnel.. I am going to try Alisa Craig next time, thanks to the comments below I can sow over the Christmas break.
Exactly the same was just about to pull my onions up because of slugs but they have turned out great Will you film the sensu onions being sown ?would be interesting to see
Good to hear something has turned out good this year despite the slugs and weathers best efforts! Yup, will do another sowing video in a week or two and will make sure I’ve got the Senshyu on the list 👍🌱👍
@@marksallotmentplot Ok good luck! Hopefully it goes to plan. Thought you might be adding canoe paddles to your amazon wish list with all of that rain you guys have had! Our onions didn't amount to anything this year they would probably bolt if we were to buy sets. There's always next year as they say! Take care!
hey mark I wanted to ask, but I'm trying to save my own seeds from onions ive grown from seed. should I just leave an onion in the soil until next year despite them flopping over and being ready to pick, or should I keep the onion and replant the onion in the ground next year?
I've never saved onion seed before but the seeds will come from the flower head. Found this great video that shows exactly how to do it: th-cam.com/video/8Vf0zIbnSww/w-d-xo.html
Lost all my onions to onion rot or onion fly most was done from seed that I got from growen local so disheartening my first time trying doing them from seed so might have to give up growing onions
Quality content as always. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

@Jimsraisedbedgarden when do you sow your Senshyu?
@@lksf9820 usually start mine off end of October when I do my Garlic 👍
@@Jimsraisedbedgarden Seed? Just sowing mine now, wish me luck 😅
I’d say its the weather this year Mark, previous years ive harvested overwinter onions June. This year everything seems very late.
We had really strong wind a few days ago.
Nice looking onions there Mark
Thanks Jazqui.

I'm wondering why you didn't leave them in longer? The tops hadn't gone over in the ones we could see.
Alisa Craig sown 3 Jan - massive! Best overwinter ones I've ever had.
I’ve heard a few folk say Ailsa Craig are decent Steve.
If it’s got the Digwell seal of approval they’ll be going on the list to try 👍👍👍
@@marksallotmentplot Some say that they do not store as well as others, but then again nor do any of the Japanese overwintering onions either
Nice bunch of onions there Mark! Did the garden centre sort out that ditch near your plot that got flooded?
Thanks 🙂
Nah the ground next to my plot is still the same. I’ve hatched half a plan to deal with it in the Autumn though 👍🌱👍
