Hi Mark, the carrots look great. I've bought seeds to try them myself. Unfortunately I lost all my leeks. I went out at night to find out what had destroyed them. They were covered in caterpillars!! Obviously I knew it wasn't from butterflies so after some searching I found out there's actually a leek moth caterpillar 😢 I'd no idea they existed
Love the idea of starting the garlic off in modules! I managed to plant mine out in a planter/bucket a few weeks ago & it's about 3" up already! Hope all our gardens survive storm Darragh!
The few I put in one of the buckets seem to be doing way better than all the others. My first time trying it in the bucket this year though. I like to start the ones off that go in the ground in modules first to give them more of a fighting chance. Its a bit of a challenge catching it at just the right time to put out as it can very quickly become root bound in the modules. 👍🌱👍
Blame away, I’ve got broad shoulders 😂. My worry down here in Cornwall, is that I won’t get enough cold weather for the garlic to split. I’ve since found out that I could have put them in the fridge for a few weeks prior to planting, so I might try that next year. Always enjoy watching your videos, it’s a great uplifting style you have. PS. Vitax do their Q4 rootmore mycorrhizal, works well and not too expensive.
Funny how we’re only a few hundred miles apart yet the weather is so different. It is a bit unseasonably warm during the day here at the mo but over night temps are dropping into the negatives. Will take a look at the Vitax Q4 fungi. I use the general purpose feed sometimes and that seems like good stuff 👍🌱👍
Hi Mark, I have joined your patreon. I love your videos and updates, too. Life does take over, hard juggling family, work & allotment too. We are currently redecorating our hall, absolute nightmare, only hubby and I at home now as our 3 sons have their own homes. Juggling work, planning for Christmas, and checking our plots due to the storm, too. We were hoping to have it finished before Christmas, not a hope but, will keep trying. Another great update. Have a lovely time at your work Christmas night out. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊
Aww thanks Christine, that's so kind of you and it really does mean a lot to me 😊 Decorating takes up so much time and effort. Hopefully you get yours done in time for Christmas giving you some downtime over the festive period. Off to the allotment tomorrow to see how its looking after the storm. Doesn't seem to have been too bad here but you never know. 👍🌱👍
One of Santa's little helpers has told me I am getting a Hori Hori from Niwaki for Christmas, looking forward to using it. Hope you enjoyed your works Christmas meal.
Brilliant Angela!🎅 The Niwaki one is one of the best ones you can get. I absolutely love mine and use it for some many different jobs around the allotment.👍🌱👍 They night out was great, thanks. Little bit of a fuzzy head the following day bot thankfully not too bad 😛
Thanks Ali. Such a nice day at the allotment today. Temps weren’t too bad. Think the reading in the car was about 8c which is decent for this time of year. Hope your garlic gives you a great harvest next year! 👍🌱👍
I’m slowly putting mine deeper and deeper each year. When I started out I used to have the cloves poking right up but have gone much deeper the last couple of years.👍🌱👍 Hoping next years crop works out as it can’t be any worse than this years 😋
I've just found your channel. I really enjoyed your enthusiasm and tips. Very inteteresting about the MF, I hadn't thought about using it for veg. I just wondered where best to get hold of some pallet collars. I have been trying for ages asking around at garden centres and builders merchants with no luck at all. No one seems to know what I mean. I live in the South, so maybe isn't a thing!! Looking forward to catching up with your previous videos and future ones. Happy gardening.
Hi Mary, welcome along and thanks for the sub 😊 I've only really used MF for the plants I grow in the PolyTunnel but expanding its use to a lot of other things this year after speaking to some other folk who use it more widely. I'm also planning on grinding the granules down into more of a powder to make it stretch a little further as its pretty expensive stuff. I've been lucky to pick up most of my pallet collars of Facebook Matketplace. A lot of places used to give them away free but they seem to have caught on to the fact people use them in their gardens these days and have started charging for them. Hope you manage to pick some up free or if not low cost 👍🌱👍
Hi Mark. I put my garlic in and totally forgot the mycorrhilzal fungi. I did watch Pete Trenouth and Duncan from Coastal Gardens but alas, I forgot. Anyhoo, theyre up now. I plant my garlic about the same height again in the ground. I agree with you about certain garden items, the HoriHori and Sweet Candle. My Crispus brussels are doing great, so I will be repeating that next year. In all though, you brought out some great produce. What more could you ask? Watch the weather. Elaine 😁
I’d be lying Elaine if I didn’t say I forgot the MF to begin with. If you look closely you’ll see a cut in the vid just before I plant the first one out. Before that there’s no bag of MF or tub of blood, fish and bone in shot 😂 Luckily I remembered just in time and they appear later on 😂. Hope your garlic turns out fab next year. Apart from this year I’ve usually had a great crop without the MF 👍🌱👍
@marksallotmentplot Unlike film critics, who pull apart footage (latest one I viewed was The Polar Express), I never noticed the slight of hand (film edititing). Very crafty there Mark. I gobbled it up 😁👍
I’m putting in a lot more than in ore ious years. I use loads of onions and garlic in cooking. They don’t take a lot to preserve either which makes things a lot easier. Here’s hoping for a bumper crop in 2025 👍🌱👍

i have some granular MF so bought a salt grinder to make powder. Also ordered a tub of powdered MF so looking for a flour sifter or a large normal salt or pepper shaker.
That’s a great idea to use a grinder to make a powder out of the MF. Will deffo be giving that I try. I don’t mind spending on the allotment but MF seems pretty expensive so any way of stretching it is a win in my book 👍🌱👍
Hi Mark … I looked at the link for the Hori Hori and I don’t think it’s the one you’re using. I know Tony has a link too but that gets mixed reviews on sturdiness. I bought some mycorrhizal fungi from Homebase, own brand so cheaper. I’ve grown my carrots in a pallet bed with sand etc & best so far. Some are starting to get wispy roots & quite small so think I might have too much sand. Also doing garlic in the tunnel as fed up with rust. If poor again I might not bother next season.
Hi Vanessa, well spotted on the Hori Hori. I use one from Niwaki but I don’t like posting links of things that are a bit expensive so picked a cheaper one off Amazon. This is the one I use: www.niwaki.com/hori-hori-pro I’ll have to take a look at Homebase for their MF. It seems pretty expensive in general but if it helps with growing things I’ll give it a shot 🙂. Good luck with a garlic 👍🌱👍
i think its time you got some traps , cover with chicken wire to protect birds . these rats seem to be a major aspect going against you. put your foot down and get them eradicated mark. rat pee is dangerous to our health. that comes first. great vid, top chap
Think you might be onto something there Paul. Might have to have a wee trip along to the garden centre to see what they've got in. 👍🌱👍 Any excuse to go to the garden centre and spend some money 😂
I can't afford to join patrion. But it would be nice to know what's going on with you. We still care, even if we're not patrion you know

It doesn’t help that my writing on the label was terrible and I could hardly see it 😂
