@RABBI Shekel I knew about the red wedding, but I avoided watching the entire show until it was all finished. All of the spoilers I heard went in one ear and out the other since I didn't know any character names or locations to be able to make any sense of it. I recommended this (book) series to my sister years ago before the show aired and every time she'd me tell she loves Robb and wishes he'd get fleshed out more, I'd just do a little cry-giggle to myself (because I agree). I vividly remember her calling me one night and when I picked up, the first thing she said was "Why did you do this to me, you demon???" And I knew instantly she read the chapter. I couldn't help but feel satisfied that it affected her as much as I was hoping lol

When Geoffrey’s wedding happened, I thought that was it. Had no clue about this one. I was horrified, in shock, and then that silent end credits leaving me to my thoughts and to cope.

@@spirittammyk Yes she started to get suspicious but "Rains of Castamere" playing in the background was the final nail in the coffin. It's a Lannister song which tells a destruction of a house. Proudly sang by Lannisters. What's up with that playing here.. on a Northern wedding?

    • @Jake-oc3vx
      @Jake-oc3vx 5 ปีที่แล้ว +120

The song is "The Rains of Castemere" it was written and sung when Tywin at only the age of 14(maybe a little older) went and literally wiped out House Reyne. The house rebelled and Tywins father Tytos was seen as a joke by everyone so Tywin took care of the issue and people realized to fear a 14 year old boy and wrote the song to remember. It's now the considered the Song of the Lannisters.

_It hurts so much,_ she thought. _Our children, Ned, all our sweet babes. Rickon, Bran, Arya, Sansa, Robb... Robb... please, Ned, please, make it stop, make it stop hurting..._ The white tears and the red ones ran together until her face was torn and tattered, the face that Ned had loved. Catelyn Stark raised her hands and watched the blood run down her long fingers, over her wrists, beneath the sleeves of her gown. Slow red worms crawled along her arms and under her clothes. It tickles. That made her laugh until she screamed. ‘‘Mad,’’ someone said, ‘‘she’s lost her wits,’’ and someone else said, ‘‘Make an end,’’ and a hand grabbed her scalp just as she’d done with Jinglebell, and she thought, _No, don’t, don’t cut my hair, Ned loves my hair._ Then the steel was at her throat, and its bite was red and cold.

It’s more apparent in the books what’s going on.

First Tulisa and the baby, then the horror of the slaughter inside and outside, then Greywind, all the whole we’re terrified for Arya just incase she’s dragged into it, then the brief relief when we see Robb and Cat - just enough to give you hope. Then BAM “I’ll find another”.
It’s a service reactors provide in this episode to remind us we’re not all mad/over-reacting. This scene is brutal! 💔

The Red Wedding was even more heart breaking in the books, more specifically Catelyn's death. It describes her sawing into her hostage's neck until she hit bone before her knife was taken away, then "crows clawing at her face" as she laughs, which we find out later was her clawing at her face in madness, and then as a knife is pressed to her throat, her last thoughts are "No! Don't let them cut my hair, Ned loves my hair!"

there were actually a few hints at it in the book that set up the red wedding, the show replicated a couple. in the book tywin mentions to tyrion that some wars are won by sword while others are won by pen when tyrion asks what letter he is writing earlier in the book, which i think the show copied. Also, even though it was a written medium, the song "The Rains of Castamere" hints at it plenty, just a few chapters before the wedding the song is sung and history explained if i remember correctly, then in the sections leading up to the massacre, time is spent detailing how terrible the musicians were(since they were really just soldiers dressed up and acting like musicians) and slowly hinting how things are off, like the door closing and stuff which they capture well in the show.
while it definitely is more blindsiding in the books due to the nature of tv and literature, it isnt completely unhinted at
also that little bit of hope raising at the beginning of this episode, where robb and cat think of a new plan to win, is a lot more extensive in the books, even including a point where robb lays out a plan to legitimize jon snow so he can be his heir, really playing with the hopes of the readers, which GRRM is only too good at doing, he somehow always gets people so matter how many times he raises your hopes and crushes them.

All respect for Michelle Fairley's & Richard Madden's performances. I always lose it near the end because Robb accepts that they're doomed, but Cat keeps fighting. Brutal.
The RW took almost a week to shoot & the actors had to go thru the scenes over & over. In interviews, the guy who plays Walder Frey said it really got to him, seeing this cruelty reenacted day after day & knowing Madden (Robb), Chaplin (Talisa), and Fairley would be leaving the show. When the episode wrapped the whole crew cried.

Yep! The chapter comes about midway through book 3, but he finished almost the entire book, skipping that scene entirely, and came back to it at the end when there was nothing else left to do. It's a really well-written chapter and feels almost surreal at the end with Catelyn basically going crazy from seeing the massacre of her kinsmen and family.

Robin - I feel like I keep telling people to watch the cast commentaries lately...but the Blu Ray's cast commentary for this episode are Michelle and Richard, and it's the first time they see the episode in its entirety. Another Novel Note: Something they don't explain in the show is why Grey Wind (Robb's Direwolf) was locked up.
In "A Storm of Swords," when arriving at the Twins for the wedding, Grey Wind senses the pending betrayal and becomes very aggressive towards Lord Frey's men. Lord Frey uses Robb's desperation to regain his army as leverage and orders Grey Wind locked in the stables.
This was left out of the show as the writers felt it would give away the big reveal.

    • @linnilotus
      @linnilotus 6 ปีที่แล้ว +120

DarkLight523 grey wind wasn’t butchered in a cage in the books either. One of the men was able to release Grey Wind and the direwolf tore several Frey’s to pieces before going down. I much prefer that version with the direwolf going down fighting then being shot like a fish in a barrel

"A Dothraki wedding without at least three deaths is considered a dull affair."
Joking aside, Robb was a military genius. But, Robb was a poor political leader. And, that was what sealed his fate. He allowed his blind friendship with Theon cost him his home. And, he allowed his love for Talisa to destroy a valued political alliance in addition to sullying his word. Compare Robb now to Jon Snow, who despite his love of Ygritte never forgets his duty to the realm.
You're officially no longer "sweet summer children." And, Winter Is Coming.

I'd argue that Ned was a good political leader, it's why his enemies had to work so hard to take him down. He was ultimately undone by his honor and a sudden betrayal of a deal he had brokered. I wouldn't exactly call Ned incompetent at politics. He didn't like the Game, but he played it well enough. He just couldn't see that the game was rigged against him from the very start.

Now read the ending of the book chapter (from Catelyn‘s perspective), that will definitely make you feel „better“ ;)

Loked420, or watch the correlating season(s) lore videos after each book, since they do a decent job of following along with the books for the seasons that they can follow. Some of the book's get split up in the later seasons and then obviously it gets to a point where they go past it, but the later Seasons just means that once she's finished with book 3 she can watch the lore videos for season 3 and 4. Especially since the Lore videos will remind her of stuff that kind of gets buried under a shit ton of information. I want to say that a couple of them aren't even mentioned in the books, but are in the History of Westeros book. I could be completely wrong about that. I think it helps for the series because it's all the lore that goes around with the show but they can't put in otherwise every episode would be a movie. They don't use all of the lore of Westeros, just the lore that pertains to what they use in the show, especially places that they mention that we will never see because there's not enough time.

I put the book down, paced around my room for 20 minutes, before I could muster the strength to pick it up again. This is one of the most iconic scenes in Western fiction, hands down. There are a few things I want to point out that you might have missed or been unaware of.
    1. The reason why episode 9's tend to be good is that they are written by George RR Martin, the author of A Song of Ice and Fire. That is the series of books on which the show is based.
    2. The sudden change in music was when Cat realized something was seriously wrong. This is because the song that was played was Rains of Castamere. It is a Lannister song about how they defeated their strongest rivals House Reyne. Cersei mentions it to Margery in the previous episode. The song would have no place in a Stark event considering they are the current strongest rivals.
    3. One of the musicians playing the song is a member of Coldplay
    4. The lords of Westeros have a custom that says you cannot harm a guest under your roof. That is why, as soon as the Starks arrive, Walder Frey offers them bread and salt before saying anything else to put their mind at ease by officially making them guests who have eaten under his roof.
    5. The Blackfish, Cat's uncle got up "to take a piss" and left before things went south.
    6. Roose Bolton the guy who stabbed Robb claiming "The lannisters send their regards", one of the strongest bannermen of Robb, was the same guy who sent Jaime off with a Maester(Qyburn) to cultivate good will with Tywin.

Exactly! Don't understand why moderators don't delete those comments. Comments should only be about the previous episodes, plain and simple.

This episode is a right of passage. That's why so many people kept saying they couldn't wait for it (they're still idiots for saying so). A brutal reminder that literally anything can happen, even though everyone who watches the show already thinks they know that. I still cry every time I watch it, even in reaction videos.

I know it's been four years and im not trying to be a dick but it's "rite of passage" not "right of passage". Who knows, maybe this correction will be useful to someone.

@@Rubiecat Believe it or not I appreciate being corrected. I get annoyed by a ton of grammar mistakes people make, things like "should of" and others. I don't think I've ever noticed it's supposed to be "rite of passage" before, so thank you!

I don’t know about anyone else but the thing that hurt the most in this episode was seeing Greywind die the way he did. At least in the book he breaks out of the pen and kills a few soldiers trying to save Rob.
Also bravo to the Hound for getting Arya out of there.

Wow. I never knew Greywind did that in the Books. Wish they had put that in the show. Comes down to Budget I suppose. They had already used CGI for Bran and Rickon’s Direwolves earlier in the episode.

The song they played that made Cat freak out is The Reins of Castamere. Its a song thats about the Lanasters destroying a house and is played to put fear in the hearts of their enemies as a warning or that they are about to die.

Another great reaction! So many of us have been waiting for you to see this episode! (Without feeling the need to spoil it for you!)
I know it's hard to watch, but for me this episode underlines the simple, real-world truth that makes this show so great...
Heroes don't get to survive just because they're good. Villains don't die just because they're bad.
So many people stopped watching at this point because it was too much for them. But keep at it!
For me, this is the point when one of my all-time favourite shows went on to become the single greatest show ever made!
    Love from UK.
