If you haven't noticed, the crafters have gone bonkers for the Roladex/Memorydex as a medium to craft on. That Heidi Swapp punch is for the designer's Memorydex system which is very similar to Roladex. You can punch your holes with a single hand punch, then cut slits from the bottom edge into the hole and trim it out a little and it's done! I bought my punch at an Office Supply store. When I bought my rolodex system at a thrift store, it came with a mirror, the alphabetical divider cards, colored plastic protector sheets, and later I found other cardstock weight cards made to hold business cards.

I find these in thrift stores all the time. They follow me home. I have them in various sizes and styles. I use them for so many things...Postcrossing addresses, personal addresses, library catalog, art journal, etc, etc.

I have a big Rolodex SW-35 with the cool plastic cover. I found it at Goodwill a few years ago for like $3. It sits atop my secretary desk and I use it to keep all the business cards in that I have had laying around the house forever. It's got cards going back 30+ years now.

Thanks for reminding me of my old Rolodex languishing in a shed at a time when I was considering revising my unsatisfactory index card system for contacts, recipes etc. to be more accessible. Will dust it off and get real creative.
Btw, I use yellow cards in my contact file box for the same purpose as the YellowPages, i.e. themed contacts, rather than named. I write the name of the company on a white card in case I know I'm likely to remember them by name, and the type of company, or product that I would look them up for, on a yellow card.

It was AMAZINGLY efficient! I had forgotten how much so until you showed it again on your "link". EVERY office used to have at least one. Best parts? Compact, desktop friendly design. Easily added to or edited and... NO BATTERIES REQUIRED! So sorry mine was "lost" across several moves of my residence. WHERE CAN YOU BUY ONE TODAY?

I've been recently getting into Memory Dex cards and swapping. I'm a mixed media artist and love using them to try new mediums or paints and I can keep all of my inspiration in one spot. They also have Rolodex metal die cuts if you have a manual cutter like a Cuttlebug or Bigshot. Love your video! Can't wait to watch more!

I loved rolodexes back in the day. A disc-bound planner is like a "flat rolodex" with the same ability to easily add to the system. And it is easier to store.

I’m too young to have used Rolodex cards for contacts but I know all about memorydex or swapping decorative cards! Some people use them for recipes, photos, and journaling! Cool video!

It's hard finding those card inserts for older Rolos that take the large sized cards. Common as dirt for the modern Rolos.

I still use a Rolodex for many of the reasons you suggest at the end of your video: it will survive long after digital media is obsolete! I also use a British version, called Rotadex - the hole spacing is different, but it is available in a wider variety of sizes. Thanks for the video - I'm off to subscribe and watch some more.

It's a great place to store passwords for online services and other online accounts. I wrote some software to encrypt all of my online accounts, but each account requires a unique key to encrypt and decrypt it. Using a universal key would compromise the entire database and a large part of my online identity. But with a Rolodex, I can file the site and the unique key required to unlock it's sensitive information in my software.

Brilliant... I've had ideas for card system back ups for ages because to break the Internet you only need to pull the plug out the wall (electric outlet??) or the batteries to get used up without means of charging. . . So yes analogue me!!!
Im being post apocalyptic here maybe, but it is very feasible for us to loose the digital monster, quite easily. There's just been a huge cyber attack affecting the UK and others, and one of these days someone is going to be successful in disrupting the planet despite all the assurances the data providers give.
I enjoyed the references to the quantum mechanics of flash drives and other devices as most folks think electronic data is written in stone and will last forever. I thought of making a time capsule using digital but it would all leak away, granted it may take centuries, or it could take seconds of an electronic pulse like the Carrington effect to wipe it out... So analogue me!!!
My last point?... The digital era was supposed to set us free, to give us more time to enjoy the time by doing things for us faster. In actuality it's caused more and more work, and how much chaos and damage has it caused to other structures on the planet??? you've got to think about that, please.
Digital has done so much good, but at a huge human price, without digital we wouldn't have advanced as far as we have but there are consequences, to us, and we just do not care until, it comes knocking on the door...
Record everything on paper as technology, the type we have are developing now..... will be our undoing in the next few years.
    So analogue me...
Thanks Joe you're great, I enjoy your stationery obsession very much.
    Best wishes

I'm totally with you. I'm using digital to amass as much useful info as possible, and intend to get either a laser printer or a tank inkjet with pigment ink to condense the info onto paper for reference files of a few standardised sizes I can easily cut from A4 sheets, i.e. A5, A6 and A7. A lot cheaper than buying special cards. I call them my distillates. The last few years have shown us just how precarious things are, and when the WEF talks of cyber attacks, you better listen. After all, it's in their playbook.
I also agree that digital is not quite the time and effort saver it claims to be. In the old days I would read a book of a special interest which would have a bibliography of other related books, and a list of suppliers for special tools and materials. You got a catalogue you could browse and learn from as well, and order your supplies if you could not get it locally. Trying to find stuff online is sometimes like a needle in the haystack, even with search. Pages of pages of the same Chinese junk re-labled by a gazillion sellers. And if you don't have the latest computer/phone, the constant code "upgrades" often leave you looking at a blank page - literally. For example, I can no longer access the Screwfix website, and now they stopped producing a catalogue. In the old days it was quicker to read a book, send for the catalogue and subsequently a cheque and order than to find what I want online. And I knew I would get something of quality recommended. As an aside, I gave up web design as it's a fast moving target.

I would think the normal rolodex might get ppl spilling coffee or something else on them after a while, but the old vintage ones had a cover over the whole thing, not as pretty maybe but I would think less hassel, but do they rotate as nicely etc? any idea? why do i want one with a smart phone on hand you may ask? because you never know when something digital is going to break down (tho I guess I could constantly upload to online but meh.

I’ve had my Rolodex model 5024X since 1981. It still works, though all four rubber anchors are badly cracked. I notice the one in the video does not have rubber anchors. I was just thinking about giving it to Goodwill when I learned from this video that a Goodwill store sold one for only two dollars, TWO DOLLARS?! Perhaps I’ll keep mine in my storage locker, and instead put it in my will to have it donated to a vintage office supplies museum instead.😝😜🤪

@@nonelost1 do you mean the rubber things on the foot which protects the desk and prevents movement? You could wrap a bit of old inner tube around the base.

No matter how advanced computers and software become, they will never replace the advantage of having something physical in your hands. I'm currently in college and can't stand all the laptops in class when all you need in class is a spiral notepad and a good pen. The constant clicking of keyboards can also be distracting in a lecture.

Great thoughts. That recent cyber attack you mention is serious enough that Microsoft just issued a patch for Windows XP, which they haven't officially supported in years.
It's easy to backup text files to paper, much less easy media files. Perhaps we'll be left with only literary images.
