Joe, talking about fastening pieces of paper together, have you checked out treasury tags? Treasury tags are short pieces of cord with a small metal cross piece at either end, and they are threaded through holes punched in the paper, to loosely but securely bind stacks of paper together. They were made famous by Winston Churchill, who loathed staples and staplers, and ONLY used treasury tags to bind his speech manuscripts and other documents together because they allowed him to lay his documents flat on a lectern or desk. He would scream at his staff if they used staples. Look up "treasury tags", and see if that interests you. I have used them with great pleasure.

Sweet! I have a Bates model C in rough but perfectly functional state, and I agree that they are amazing stapling machines. Good luck in finding a nice one for yourself - well, maybe not luck, they're really quite easy to find. (:

I have two model Bs and enough B-50 NOS refills to last the rest of my life, the life of my children, and lives of my grandchildren (should I be so blessed :-))
