I agree about the spices only to a point: if they're ground, they won't last long, especially if you don't keep them in a cool, dark place. But, anything you can keep in whole form is different. Keep your whole seeds, berries, pods and roots in the dark and cool and they will last you for years. Grind them yourself when you need them - I suggest a good, heavy mortar and pestle that'll last you a lifetime instead of electric grinders. A tip: just before grinding, gently heat the whole spices on a dry pan; that'll free up the volatile oils and give you more flavor.

They LOVE paper products stored in your home.. I dont save cardboard boxes either bugs like those also. Mice too! Theres many stores that have plastic storage boxes for a reasonable cost. We are living in a wasteful throwaway society. Do we have to throw everything out only to buy something else new and shiny? We should be encouraged to keep what we have and reuse it in creative ways to its full potential. In Michigan you keep your clothes a long time because you have at least three wardrobes (winter, summer and fall). The transition from winter to summer is swift (it is called April), so we don't have much of a spring. You may get only one year of use out of clothes that you keep for four years.
@@pennylowe8713 it's they're not there. If you don't buy clothes that date quickly you can get away with wearing the pieces you like for as long as you want. Throw them out because fashion changes he advises. Well only if you keep with fashion. Personally idgaf. This is for major consumers and people who are carbon copies of others.

I make my own hair accessories & bedding. I also make towels, tablecloths ect. My Oma was a seamstress here in the Nederlands, I now have her "new" sewing machine, (1954❔)
I spent this rainy day sorting all the supplies I had all around the house. Amazing seeing these things in one place. Soaps, extra toothbrushes and toothpaste, shampoos, medical supplies, lotions etc. To save space, I put each category in 2 gallon ziplock bags lined up on a closet shelf. I now have "prepper" supplies to use in the rest of the year and beyond!
I used an old cheap French knife for years for trimming veg from our garden. Always re purpose if you can. If you own pets, use your thin towels for the floors for tracks or drying rainy fur. I also make pet beds from old coats and sweaters.
I keep old calendars to cut out the favourite pictures and turn them into cheap wall art. Stick the pics in a cute frame and they look amazing. I'd say two thirds of the art in my house came from old calendars...along with a handful of great recipes. As for chipped crockery, there's this thing called clear nail varnish that works wonders. Just make sure the chip is clean and dry, then apply a couple coats and leave it to dry. Voila, a sealed, food safe dish saved from the trash. I've got several in my cupboards that have had the treatment and it's still holding up really well.
Brilliant advice! With my boys i have a cardboard box in each wardrobe. When an item of clothing is too small it gets popped in the box and when the box is full it goes in the loft for my youngest or off to the charity shop.

@@ecallk5544 i used to agree but honestly, done right it's easy peasy. For example, if my son pops something on that doesn't fit then he takes if off and i pop it in an 'old clothes' box in the cupboard. Appreciate everyone's lives are different and not everyone is so near a shop. For me owning less things and having regular clear outs have cut my cleaning time in half, easily. I do keep old calendars because they are easy references if i need to find a date on something that happened, kind of a journal in a sense. My Mom recently found an old calendar dated back to 1980! It was so much fun to look back to see what we were doing back then.
I'm pretty sure they mean if you're not wearing them. Lots of ppl keep their old clothes in hopes they'll lose/gain weight and as time goes on, they are going out of style anyway. Better to give them to charity where some thrifty person will buy and use them. Seriously, ask around, some ppl have several sizes they want to believe they'll get back into someday and they just take up room.
You should probably hold on to receipts longer than a week, particularly if it's a credit card receipt. At least wait until the credit card statement is out and you can verify the amount of the receipt on it before you throw it out.
Put all the disks in a few CD cases. Keep all the disks but it is a lot easier to store. I have one case for kid movies, one for PG13-R, and one for games.

Thank you. I'm beginning to realise I am hoarding a little....and I thought I was superorganised. Let's face it, sorting your clutter is not the same as throwing it away.
1. You can sharpen steak knives. 2. Spices/Herbs (in their dried/powdered form) do not go bad they simply become less potent. 3. Can turn old sheets into canvas for painting/crafts. 4. You could donate mini shampoo & such to shelters. 5. If you use a credit/debit card for purchases, you should shred them because they have the last 4 digits of your card number on them. 6. We use cardboard boxes to draw/paint on and to make things like baskets & such out of.
I like that you suggest donating old towels to a local animal shelter. The ones near where I live are happy to receive donations. (Including unopened pet food, treats, carriers, bedding, etc.) Plus donations to 501(c)(3) charities are tax deductible.
Years repeat and I get a great deal of joy out of reusing calendars! One person's trash is another person's treasure! 2021 reuses 1993 As well as several others. Reusing old calendars is great fun to me!
Old calendars have beautiful scenes to use in crafting or framing. Remember past things you wrote on the calendar. I love looking and remembering special days. Merry Christmas.
I agree with all of the throwaway tips, except for hair ties. I keep the ones that are just elastic but have stretched out to use on cords or even curtains. They come in very handy. Sometimes you need something better than a rubber band. These are the ones with no metal in them, too. The metal tends to cut into stuff and corrodes. The fancy ones I give away or throw away. Great video.
I also keep mine in a ziplock bag, in a closet. Although I don’t know, I figure that it’s constant exposure to air and light, that dries them out and ages them quickly.
As a prepper, I would say that you should rotate certain items, like medications, instead of disposing of them. What I mean is that, if you still have leftover medication, when you receive a new prescription, continue using the old, until it’s used up. Like a FIFO (first in; first out) system. This will allow you to use what you still have, perhaps, without it expiring and it will also save you money. Newer items should, basically, always go to the back.
Yes, I completely agree with you 100%. Towels, bedding etc are badly needed at animal shelters. Mugs, etc are best donated to the homeless shelters, the list goes on where things are needed for reusing or recycling, other than I throwing and ending up in landfill taking forever to decompose. This vid wasn't a very bright idea at all.
This video called me out like no other. Just when I thought I wouldn’t relate to the next number, I did, and did, and did. I feel like someone has been recording my whole life and just told me to get it TOGETHER. And no, I will throw none of it away until a massive fit of mania and suddenly want to throw everything away and live like a nomad... and then end up needing that 15 year old thing just days later. I burned the old boxes and receipts at least 🙄

Old power cords make great ties for tree saplings . Cards are great bookmarks, if they are attractive. One card per book is useful and a beautiful reminder. Cardboard is great fro the garden, keeping weeds from taking over and keeping moisture in the soil. It can be lightly covered with mulch.
When disposing of old medicines and supplements - don't flush or just throw them into the the trash. Take them to your local pharmacy. They can cause harm to the environment if flushed or tossed. The pharmacy will dispose of them properly.

I have found that old calendars are a great source to charge your memory when it becomes important to know what took place at a certain date. Be it an operation, a lost insurance policy, or an important anniversary date. I keep one calendar like a diary for each year for about 5 years. It has saved me several times..

Same with old photographs. I heard a professional photographer interviewed one time, and he strongly suggested that you make hard copies of any photos you really want to keep. Technology is changing so fast that the hard drive, thumb drive or whatever they're backed up on may not be usable in the future. Like you, I won't part with my DVD and CD collection, even if they do take up space.

I use the condiment packets. I just used a tartar sauce one because my husband doesn't like it so a whole jar would go bad. I use them in recipes.
I do too, especially the Taco Bell sauce when we make homemade tacos.
When they are past their prime then I use them for keeping critters away from my house!?? I just read salt & vinegar are natural ways to get rid of unwanted weeds....

We are living in a wasteful throwaway society. Do we have to throw everything out only to buy something else new and shiny? We should be encouraged to keep what we have and reuse it in creative ways to its full potential. Our belongings only become a problem if they are not stored correctly and there’s no plan to use it in another way.

Well, after 2 years I am now able to wear my old clothes again. I'm glad I didn't throw them out.
In Michigan you keep your clothes a long time because you have at least three wardrobes (winter, summer and fall). The transition from winter to summer is swift (it is called April), so we don't have much of a spring. You may get only one year of use out of clothes that you keep for four years.
There now out of style.

Old clothes become rags for use in the garage or cleaning cloths - tee shirts, etc are perfect to use - especially if they are faded.
Who cares if your clothing is out of style, I get like 90 percent of my clothes second hand so they’re probably out of style as soon as I buy it.

As a prepper, I would say that you should rotate certain items, like medications, instead of disposing of them. What I mean is that, if you still have leftover medication, when you receive a new prescription, continue using the old, until it’s used up. Like a FIFO (first in; first out) system.
