We bought my wife a 65 plate Mini Cooper 1.5t. It was pre registered 2 months previously and had 6 miles on the clock. We saved 3 grand on the new price. 3 years on and we have been really pleased with it and don’t plan on parting with it yet.

I got a cracking deal on my Pre-Reg car, I was looking for a very specific Mercedes A200 AMD Petrol , with the Premium package, manual gearbox, in Mountain grey, and I could have bought one new for £32,000, but there was this exact car at a Merc garage near me as a pre-reg, it had 6 miles on the clock (delivery miles) and they sold it to me for £23,000! I still to today can't believe how lucky I was

I find that it's best to wait for three years. Yes, it's second-hand but you'll be taking off a massive chunk from its retail price and it'll be worn in (no teething issues with new buys).

A 100% YES, is the answer to that question, and depending on the time of year you buy that car, you can save a considerable amount of money.
I managed to buy a pre registered Fiat 500 595 Abarth in December 2016.
The list price for the car with all its extras was £17,458, but as it had been preregistered on Sep 1st 2016, it was advertised at a maindealers for £11,495.
It had only 7miles on its clock, and apart from being registered by the dealership, making me its second owner, it was a brand new car with £6000 knocked off the list price.

The law now is better for the consumer. A few years ago dealers sold what would now be classed as pre registered, 'as new'. I bought one with 38 miles on the clock, but it was sold 'as new' - wasn't until I looked at the V5 and saw the dealer as the first owner. The dealer - after a letter from a solicitor - took it back straight away!

The internet is the greatest place to find great prices on new cars , one second hand car i looked @ was £16750 but after looking on the net i found a brand new one for £16k and it had better spec .So some of these pre reg cars aint such a bargain .

I bought a pre-reg with less than 10 miles on the clock. And at least two of those were my test drive!

It's usually done to meet manufacturers targets in order to earn the additional revenue.

do i understand this correct, The dealer falsely inflates sales numbers by registering cars with no onwers?

    • @TheChannel1978

It's not inflated or it depends how you look at it. The dealer has already paid the manufacturer for the car, so it has been sold albeit to the dealership.

Every dealership has to sell their vehicles to remain in business.
Here in the Uk, the new registration marks come out on March 1st & Sep 1st, making the months leading up to these dates very boyant for sales.
Dealerships still have to move their stock in the depth of winter, when few customers are looking to buy a car.
There is no law saying that they cannot preregister a number of vehicles, to make up their monthly sales quota.
These vehicles are usually heavily discounted, and as they have already been registered in the dealers name, the new owner will be the cars second owner, even if the car is new with delivery miles on the clock.
If you do not mind the V5 document has you as the cars second owner, a preregistered car makes huge economic sense.

Saved $17000 my new Audi A4 Quattro by buying pre reg or demo as well call it in Australia

Oh, ok. I'm not sure if we have pre reg in Australia then. My wife bought a Q3 with 80 kms on the clock. The car was sold as a brand new car because it had not been registered. She had the choice of that car, or waiting for months for a brand new one to be shipped from Germany. She was the first registered owner, although the dealer had makeshift plates that were literally thrown on the car for a test drive.
