Disappointed not to see LPG and Natural Gas added to the comparison!! I have a Fiat Panda 4x4 Twinair with an LPG system installed and it already saved me around 1300€ a year (I do around 20k miles yearly), it's free to tax, Milan congestion charge exempt, free to park, plus it's always nice to know I'm not polluting even slightly as much as if I was running on Diesel or Petrol!
Great informative short video. I recently downsized from diesel to petrol. It's been the BIGGEST mistake of my life. Doing on average of 8 to 9k miles a year, I thought it was a no brainier. Huge mistake. My new car is literally drinking unleaded petrol. Seems like I'm filling up at least once every ten days. Whereas I did once a month in my diesel. Of note.... My driving range/style/commutes/distances all remain unchanged. Both cars were brand new from factory Nissans. Can't wait to change back to diesel. Yes it's a little noisy and less 'smooth' than petrol. But having now experienced my first petrol engine. I'll stick with diesel for their overall impression.
And if you don't care and just go for the looks, definitely buy a Golf GTE with the beautiful chrome exhaust tips and the GTI-like front with the led lighting.
ExplodingFireworks Or much better, buy a GTI Clubsport with 290 HP on overboost, DSG & DCC like i just did... For the same price as the normal GTI! Then joke the ass off this world by swapping the Turbo for "The Turbo Engineers TTE470 & Oupsidaysies, your car now have a Turbo on 470 Freaking Horsepowers in a 2 Litre engine to gas your ass off this planet !!! Suck on that one... ;)
hybrids are not that much expensive to buy than normal cars lol...a friend of mine bought a toyota yaris hybrid 2014 for around 18.000 and the mileage is just wow, we did 140km of highway once and she claimed she used only 4 euro (gas price here 95 is around 1.18 per litre) and I must say that is quite impressive! it even beats my uncle's ford focus 1.6 diesel car with at least double the economy o.o damn Toyota is packing some serious business in the economy world!
It is not correct to state that if the diesel particulate filter becomes blocked due to short journeys taken, that you will need to buy another DPF filter. Short journeys could partially block the DPF but most manufactures can perform a 'burn-off' function to turn the soot stored in the filter into ash, thereby allowing the DPF filter to be reused.
The answer is that it depends which way round you do it, how soon you spot it, and how far you drive with the wrong fuel in the car. We don’t have any advice on our site, but there’s some good advice on the AA website: www.theaa.com/breakdown-cover/advice/wrong-fuel-advice
Ivor, if you put petrol in a diesel engine and try to run it for any length of time (more than several minutes), the high pressure injection system will suffer badly (particularly with a common rail system fitted), causing metal shavings to start to seize up the high pressure pump. also these metal shavings will find there way to the injectors to also contaminate them. The net result is that if contamination has occurred, it usually means the whole injection system will need to be replaced at a very high cost. If diesel is put into a petrol car then little damage will occur.
I forgot to mention why the high pressure pump gets damaged by petrol. It's because petrol, unlike diesel, has no lubrication properties and due to the very tight tolerances between the pump, will cause metal fragments to be formed.
For some that might like a grunty diesel over a weedy frugal petrol engine. That option is out the window unless buying a 2016 diesel car . As in London Euro 5 diesels are going to feel the pinch if you need to drive into the city at anytime .
a lot of people buy diesel cars and they need to refuel, it's normal for the price to go up, even if the diesel should be cheap. I had a diesel for the past 5 years and I am getting a petrol car just because the modern petrol engines are smoother and feel more premium, at least with the more powerful one, the 3 cylinders are not for me.
Very informative all-around! But I've still been left with the question of how each of these works with environmental effects thoroughly considered. No doubt a complicated question and I've done a little bit of research on it myself, but I'd like to see some more talk about it; I find that several of the arguments for one source of power are quite narrow and I think a wider-picture perspective would be very helpful for everyone.
Since the Mid 1990's I've owned diesels - always VW's. My current TDi Golf was not effected by the scandal. My next car will be petrol. I think Councils will start banning diesels in the next few years.
I feel like in the 2.5 years it has been this video has already been outdated Electric cars now are not as expensive as they were, but let's be honest still too expensive. Also charging at home is SUPER viable for many and better than gasoline charging. also range anxiety imo is eliminated. who goes 200miles+ in a day? Very rare and 300mile cars are offered to them . Charge at night and there basically is less refuel time than a gas car as you don't need to be there. Finally if you go Telsa specific then cost goes up, but charger network is MUCH MUCH MUCH bigger and faster growing than anything else. Diesel cars are gone. After the scandal they have a terrible reputation and mostly everyone is leaving them behind. While other dumb car companies who will need to be bailed out again chase them. Plug ins are now completely useless. They cost more than an EV, go the same range, cause pollution, cost more to run and maintain, are not quiet, and are less efficient is EVERY way. Gasoline is the only one on the list to remain the same and will so for some time, but it does look like an electric revolution is coming.
Diesel is still the best for long travel&adventure. While electrics are great in cities ... that's about it. The problem with Euro6 diesel is the particulate filter clogs up ... older models just burned the soot out on motorways. The best would be an Euro 4/5 diesel hybrid with electric - use the electric in city and the diesel for long haul.
How many times he mentioned about taxes and charges? Quite depressing. We buy what we want and what we can afford here. For the most part we don't consider fuel type, taxes or other government add on costs.
Environmental impact of those batteries greatly increases the carbon footprint y just moving the problem elsewhere! Not to mention the 5-7 year battery life, the disposal impact and cost to the environment let alone the monetary cost! Real world phev don't get good mpg nor in the real world have low impact. They're a fad, doing nothing more than moving the co2 elsewhere. That said, CO2 amounts for less than 1-20th of 1% (actual 0.0039%) of total atmosphere, proving that it's an excuse to tax us to death. If governments were serious, they'd stop causing congestion and closing perfectly good access roads, thus making 1000's of vehicles a day drive miles out of their way!
The battery life of an electric vehicle is between 15 - 20 years and after that time, the battery will lose 20% of its capacity. Over the lifetime of an electric vehicle, it is cleaner than ICE cars: www.afdc.energy.gov/vehicles/electric_emissions.php www.casteyanqui.com/ev/ghg/index.html
I feel like car manufacturers should make more Diesel hybrids rather than petrols. Since Petrols are efficient in town and diesels are efficient on motorways wouldn't a diesel hybrid make more sense? Since it would get rid of the low efficiency of a diesel whilst keeping the high speed efficiency. Whereas petrol hybrids only deal with intown efficiency and are even less fuel efficient (Due to the added weight) than normal Petrols at high speed.
+messin1000 one of the problem of the diesel-hybrid is that it needs to be sold all around the world. but diesel cars are loved only in europe witch is a small market. plus a diesel-hybrid will be even more expensive
give it a few years. batteries are becoming cheaper fast and maybe hydrogen will become the new standard which cuts out the main cost which is the battery almost completely
LPyourplay hydrogen isn't coming. The infrastructure requirements alone are ruinously expensive and unlikely to ever be profitable for anyone stupid enough to attempt rolling them out. As such, the chances of you finding anywhere to fill a hydrogen car is slim to non existent and will remain so for decades. Batteries and charging tech is moving far faster than hydrogen. New supercharger standards being introduced soon will get a 200 mile fill up on a highway in under 15 minutes. And most charging happens at home.
Don't be so bloody ignorant, all car manufacturers that sell filthy diesel shit mobiles are guilty of that, VW are the only ones that were caught out and badly, they all chuck so much NOX and diesel particulate matter into the atmosphere. It's bad enough when the traffic isn't that bad like in villages but in busy towns and Cities, diesel is just disgusting.
Johny40Se7en I don't count distrust of VW as ignorance, I count it as a message to the whole car industry that they can't get away with breaking the Law. Even if they are breaking the Law atm.
I didn't mean that, seemed like you were just singling out VW like so many others do but it's just them doing it, they all do it and I agree, they should never get away with that sort of shit. I don't think people realize just how awful and filthy diesel is for the air but just like with so many things that's common place, if it brings in a lot of money, it can take a long time to change, if it all. I mean look at cigarettes, it's been proved that's absolutely a cause of cancer and other serious health problems but it still isn't banned because it brings in so much money. Makes so many people unhealthy and that addiction robs them of their money and makes them struggle in those money ways but as long as the corporations get their money, they don't give a fuck, it's just so wrong what people do to each other and this Planet over money.
Electric and hybrids are shit cars They are just like toys and aren't fun to drive like diesel or petrol cars and vw diesel scandals shouldn't effect other car manufacturers to stop making fuel cars or diesel cars . And old diesel and petrol had less carbon emissions then newer models because of all that tech in cars They have and electric cars are pain charge them and drive like a nerd so you don't waste bettary and drive like a nerd but fuel cars are fun and they make engine sound and drive better and just can't beat electric shit cars. Who cares about pollution and health issues there are so many people being killed and shot rapped on other countries so why care about health issues and if that's a problem then stop smoking stop drinking alcohol and be healthy and be safe do fitness no need to shut down fuel cars and run on electricity as electricity comes from coal oil and burns fumes and created pollution and we elated using electricity in homes so why cars it's all bullshit. I like older cars as they were proper Manley cars and had their own class.
this guy provides a no-nonsense, straight forward, clear and concise and good language for motor journaling. good good good.
Clearly made before Dieselgate scandal!
+Alex chemistry It was!
+Auto Trader was it recorded at the Volkswagen National Learning Centre?
yes, it was filmed there.
The Dieselgate scandal only involved U.S.-Spec TDI vehicles...
Actually they found out about it in the US, but the technology is in all cars so its technically a mass problem.
I owned 1.6 litre golf 2004 , had it for 8 year's, just sold it and got this 1.4 tsi golf and it drinks more then the older one
want the TSI petrol but its golf's reliability that scares me
love the video, never really spent any time thinking about it
The front end on the hybrid and electric models are really nice!
how about sediment at the fuel tanks floor? would it be a serious problem in future?
Can anyone please tell the name of the background music in the video? Thanks

hdueo probably not included as you can't buy it from the manufacturer.
+Nick Hastings but you can get CNG from vw tgi, audi g-tron, skoda G-tech, and even seat..
20k a year in a Panda?

Diesel's are going out of fashion very quick in the uk .
what about CNG ?
THIS guy forgot to mention that it only takes 30 min to Fast charge the car,I know because I own the Egolf
What's the song used throughout this video?
Golf Hybrid Wins it for me.
Good video. If petrol is poured into a diesel engine or vice versa, would the engine be damaged?

that e-golf charge time SUCKS! 8 hours on a wall adaptor? 13 hours on a main?
make a video on 'what transmission?' including all types of automatics
Uks most popular is diesle
Now it's not.....
Dieselgate.....
What, petrol cheaper than diesel? I guess that's true only in UK, because any other European country I have been to features the opposite.

Petrol engine fitted with lpg always cheaper than diesel. Check how much it costs to replace the dpf filter

I'm surprised seeing 184 lb/ft of torque for the 1.4 TSI petrol golf. That's 2.5L N/A engine territory.
I love all 4

where i live petrol is expensive then diesel for about 15%
I would choose the hybrid or diesel If I had money not electric because it sucks

Plug-in for me.

Petrol and diesel only
Electric and plug-in hybrid only..... a few years from now.....
Diesel is now cheaper than petrol in some places
reason why gas powered car dominante is because of the money wish they can just sale electric car cheaper.
