I had to play against it already. The opponent had a red creature out that said damage dealt in counters, played a red sorcery deal 1 damage to each creature an opponent controls, was able to get the sorcery back - felt ad, had to say nice combo though. I won with naya extert over three games - but he had two of these enchanments and the looked strong.
you still can use the green big guys that comes with negative counters (exemplar of strenght, crocodile of the crossings , defiant greatmaw hippo and so on ) and dump them on one previous 1/1 insect, you cast big bodys for cheap, and get many 1/1s to boot.
Marshall, I saw the recording of your twitch stream. Just wanted to say thank you for all the extra work you're putting into this set review. It's taking a tremendous amount of effort on your part, but trust me, IT IS APPRECIATED massively by a lot of people out here.
As always, a grand portion of knowledge. Really helpful, thanks, guys! I played a Jund counters deck at yesterday's prerelease, mostly because of lack of better options. Or so I thought. Finished with 3-1 (got very careless in round 3) and I gotta say that the Manticore of the Gauntlet/Bloodlust Inciter duo did quite a lot of work for me. Had some consistency with 2 copies of each in my deck. Direct damage that's built into the Manticore is really useful and in a counter deck it can trigger some additional effect with its counter placement; hasting it or some big green hulk with Inciter really helps to put pressure on the opponent. I'd say C+ and D/C- respectively, at least in Sealed. In a draft, I might be less eager to commit to the idea.
Vizier of Deferment think of this situation. You have a creature with an insane exert effect (eg combat celebrant) see what they block with (or if they pump something) and then blink said creature, effectively giving it vigilance and it can exert/block next turn. Vizier can also be used to blink massive token generation creatures or you can combo two viziers with life game. You can also blink an embalm creature (a big mechanic in this set) to basically kill it and get a creature for 3 mana. You can flash in Vizier as a suprise blocker. There are so many possibilities that i would give it A- instead of B-
You guys were wondering about what's supposed to create the 1/1 tokens that all these white cards are referencing. It's Oketra’s Monument. That thing will make 3-4 tokens at least! The go-wide strategy is supposed to be RW's archetype I think, which is why their gold card pumps your team.
13:03 Decimator beetle is even better than most people think, because even if you don't have a -1/-1 counter on any of your creatures you can still put one on one of opponent's creatures. Two people tried to argue with me about in on the prerelease, but i asked a judge as soon as I saw this card and then I just sent them to the judge if they didn't believe me.
Sorry if anyone already asked this or if you commented on video but how the -1/-1 counter mechanic works with cards like Gideon of the Trials, for example? I restarted to play MTG this year and I'm trying to get used to its new features. When Gideon returns into single type Planeswalker I just remove the counters on it or somethinf else happens? If it's a stupid question, sorry again, hahahaha.
2:34:57 /opinion_me but I feel like this card is definitely deserving of a C+ or even a B- because it also serves as a good target for the cards that demand you place -1/-1 counters on your creatures, and they seemed to gloss over or forget about that synergy
3:04:00 I actually sided in two of Trespasser's Curse in one of my games on the prerelease, opponent had Hapatra, Visier of Poisons and Nest of Scarabs, it also gave me a psychological advantage as i saw my opponent loose hope with every creature that he had to cast. The rest of my deck was solid so I'm not saying that the Trespasser's Curse alone won me a game, but it's a card to consider against tokens strategy.
I think Hapatra's Mark is really underestimated. It can functionally counter anything that targets one of your creatures and it has great utility synergy with green/black
Oh and if the spreadsheet is a bit to "boring" for you, you can also check out the Limited Reviews by LSV on Channel Fireball: www.channelfireball.com/articles/amonkhet-limited-set-review-blue/
Surprised with the Vizier of Remedies getting a D. It's a solid card in any deck that puts -1/-1 counters on its own creatures, which can be found in red, black or green. If you pull a bit of fixing in your pool, decks playing green can easily splash for it.
Its funny, bloodlust inciter just won a draft for me, that thing got played on turn 1 each game and helped out a ton. put a lot of pressure on my opponents.
Another synergy with Limits of Solidarity is exert creatures. You can untap them if need be, then exert them so they don't untap next turn. Alternatively, you can do something like stealing an Emberhorn Minotaur, swinging with a 5/4 menace, then pitching it to Fling to get rid of at least the Minotaur plus 10 damage to the player or 5 and two other creatures for 6 mana.
Thanks for the great work as usual on these set reviews, I hope you didn't exert yourselves to get it done! (Pun fully intended) I really depend on these reviews to get me ready for the pre release weekend, and I find the more prepared I am, the better I do.
Cancel is a 1 of in a control deck always. You want to have 2 or 3 Essence Scatter and then 1 Cancel and as many of the cycling counter as possible. The only deck that can get away with 2 Cancel is a green blue ramp deck that uses the 3 mana flash cat as well.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that the exile clause on magma spray still applies even if it deals no damage. It just needs to target a creature and resolve right? If magma spray targets a creature and resolves but the damage is prevented the creature will still be exiled if something else kills it. They say it just needs to contribute to the creature dying but it doesn't even need to contribute anything.
The way I read Nest of Scarabs was that whenever you put one or more -1/-1 counters you put the same number of tokens on the field. Is there a ruling on the card that it's just 1 token per time you place counters, not for each counter?
I think Seraph of the Suns' power is also less effective because of how many -1/-1 counters are in the format. That is relevant when damage hits the stack which is why I think black red looks like the best archetype even with embalm looking busted.
I want more feedback on doomed dissenter. I think they totally breezed over the synergy with cards that put -1/-1 counters on your own creatures. I would drop a 5/4 haste crocodile then turn my two drop into a 2/2.
I want to try the red monument in sealed. Giving every creature an ETB of rummage sounds pretty dece to me. It could turn all my extra lands into action. :) Also embalm + aftermath means you somewhat negate part of the drawback of discarding so it's almost like you drew 1.5 cards.
Lets say a 2/2 zombie is attacking and gets blocked by 7/7 wurm then u cast Time to reflect, im assuming the snake has already done the damage so the zombie dies? or does it get exiled b4 the damage is done?
the simple answer to your question is; no. split cards are, everywhere but on the stack, one card with the properties of both halves. Commit//memory for example; commit is an instant with CMC 4 and memory is an aftermath sorcery with CMC 6. in your hand, graveyard, library, or exile commit//memory is both an instant and sorcery with CMC 10.
can't you put -1/-1 counters each turn on your opp creatures with decimator beetle, regardless whether you have some on your own creatures? it doesnt say "target creature with a -1/-1 counter"
henkdachief Yes, as long as a creature you control has at least on -1/-1 counter, you can remove one and place it on to a creature the defending player controls.
the first condition is that you have to control a creature - you dont know how magic works. "Decimator Beetle’s second ability can target any creature you control, not just one with a -1/-1 counter on it. It’ll put a -1/-1 counter on the opponent’s creature even if there isn’t one to remove from your creature."
My favourite quote from this: "Sacrificing a creature when you're not winning the game is a good way of loosing a game." Sounds simple but theres a lot of depth to that statement.
The problem is that your opponent gets to choose what two cards they keep in their graveyard, which are likely the Embalm/Gravedigger targets you most wanted to nab. The rest of the cards likely don't matter unless you're against the U/R instants/sorcery-cards-in-the-grave-with-Enigma-Drake deck. Any graveyard-happy cards you do nab are likely gonna be the ones you least care about. It's more likely an okay Constructed sideboard-ish card against decks that can go heavy on graveyard-matters cards.
I'm surprised LSV didn't mention Modern Masters among his favorite draft formats. I'm going to assume he intentionally excluded it because it has an unfair advantage as it was designed specifically for limited and had a huge card pool for the designers to choose from. The first Modern Masters is my favorite draft set. Other than that, his list is really solid.
It couldn't have Flash as you can Embalm only as a sorcery, but I'd absolutely like to see a card that did something like that. You always have Back To The Brink I guess?
Shocked that the didn't see the value of oashra cultivator. An F? You're not using it for mana fix. You can throw -1/1 counters on it for the heavy hitting 2 and 3 drops in G/B two times and before it holds other two drops. Late game react to counters on the stack to fetch? Easily C-
Peter Klein I think they didn't have it in mind when they were talking about this. That being said I still think it is a C-. Could be wrong about that though, but I'd imagine when you're fetching a land it won't be all that valuable. That being said, it is a playable 1-drop that can enable really aggressive draws.
Yeah I guess C- is the correct answer. It just proofed its value the times I played it (twice that is). Far from f or D. I swallows quite some early damage too, if you're big green
Peter Klein Nice, I'm glad it worked out to be actually useful! I think I even undervalued the fixing and ramp. Also as you said blocks a fair deal of early drop creatures, which is important when you need time to do bigger things. Even the pros misevaluate things :)
Faith of the Devoted is going to be trash! you heard it here first (maybe). Draining for a few points every turn isn't enough to win a game where you're not doing anything to effect the board, and most of the cyclers are big fatties that you ought to be casting in the later turns rather than cycling. Turning a spell into a cycler that drains a few points isn't even super mana efficient or anything. And aggressively cycling will just result in a hand full of lands and an opponent at 10 life with 5 creatures on board laughing at you. Prove me wrong, Amonkhet limited! Great set review as always guys :)
Are you sure you read Trueheart twins correctly? Whenever you exert a creature ALL YOUR CREATURES get 1 power. Not just the twins. It's a 4/4 that mass pumps.
Well, they read it you mean. At this point they're reading the cards almost mechanically. I mean they consider it a D or even less. It just doesn't make any sense to me unless they misinterpreted it.
No, listen from 3:37:50 to 3:38:25 They didn't misinterpret it, it's just not that good. I think you're the one misinterpretting what they said though. They're not saying it's bad and will never work, they're just saying that it needs a lot of set-up for not that great of a pay-off.
oshhra cultivator turn one, exemplar of strenth turn 2 dump the -1/-1 counters onto your useless creature 4/4 turn 3. Questions? won me loads of games at the pre release. use oshhra as a -1/-1 dump stroke chump blocker. loads of green cards put a -1/-1 counter on a creature this is your creature in limited.
Can i ask why you guys emphasize the first word in a 3 part card name instead of the last word? it seems to be only MTG players who do it. you said "FIELD of ruin" instead of "field of RUin", like everyone else would normally say it both in and out of any games. also "Niche" is a french word, which is pronounced in english as "Neesh" (I'm french). All americans say Nitch. it's wrong. if you're going to use a foreign word you might aswell use it correctly, great job on these vids tho! love em
Why does Oashra Cultivator need to both tap and sac for it's ability to work? Like couldn't you just pay 2G and sac it? What does tapping it before sacing really accomplish here? Also why do I care, this card is bad.
Correction on Nest of Scarabs: You do get as many tokens as -1/-1 counters! How does this change the grade? Not a ton, but it is better :)
I love that card!
I had to play against it already. The opponent had a red creature out that said damage dealt in counters, played a red sorcery deal 1 damage to each creature an opponent controls, was able to get the sorcery back - felt ad, had to say nice combo though. You can get a lot of blocker for a Phyraxian Deck.
Marshall, I saw the recording of your twitch stream. Just wanted to say thank you for all the extra work you're putting into this set review. It's taking a tremendous amount of effort on your part, but trust me, IT IS APPRECIATED massively by a lot of people out here.
shutup noob
New player starting with Magic Arena -- finding myself digging up old limited resources podcasts for remastered sets XD.
loving the added graphics on this video Marshal! great work as always
Yep - Great to have the card images accompanying the audio.
Takes the review from an A to an A+ ;)
I am so happy I found this video! all the info I need for my first draft tommorow!!
I did it. Listened to the whole thing. Probably should have studied for my exams but at least I will know what the cards are at prerelease
Paul Woods Priorities!
Paul Woods same
yup
42:57 Flavor police has been alerted of your complaint. Please stay calm while our officers are on the way.
I cannot thank you guys enough for doing these set reviews. It helps tremendously when deck building!
Thanks for the great work guys, keep 'em coming :)
Great call to release this a few days before the Prerelease happens. Thanks for the great work!
Marshal and Luis if you see this I would like to thank you for your amazing content because of the set review I won the whole prerelease
LOL I like the "Brought to you by Channel Fireball" screenshot from the LR website :)
Doomed dissenter is a great target for any of the -1/-1 counters from undercosted creatures in G/B
As always, a grand portion of knowledge. Really helpful, thanks, guys!

Love LSV's "Aannnnd you broke it" in response to Marshal suggesting self-milling to power it out for 2 mana.
Vizier of Deferment think of this situation. Hype!
Hi Marshall and LSV.

Very good work! Is there a document or excel sheet that lets you sort by grade or color?
I believe that on the decimator beetle you don't need a -1/-1 counter to shrink a creature on attack. They look like separate effects.
Are they wrong about the way nest of scarabs works? "Create that many" implies that you make an insect for every counter, doesn't it?
You are correct
so its just insane in GB, isnt it?
squirtleninja yep
They more often to down play then up play cards but yes your fight
There also might be some combos with this card
I think Hapatra's Mark is really underestimated. It can functionally counter anything that targets one of your creatures and it has great utility synergy with green/black
Man this limited set looks solid also side boarding selections while drafting seems why more real in this sec compared to past
Someone should make a spreadsheet of all of this
www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/6691le/akh_ive_made_a_spreadsheet_for_limited_resources/?st=j1pl9y68&sh=ff9301fe
There you go.
You're an angel
Not my work, maybe leave a short "thank you" for A_Zucchini on Reddit. : 3
Will do :3

I hope they have more Khopeshes on their rare/mythic cards. Mythical weapon in the Egyptian era. Love its design.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah, I agree" TM

Um, we already had Holy Light with Cycling: Angelsong. It was in Shards of Alara. Not green, sure, but same effect (and with cycling 2!)
Thanks for the great work as usual on these set reviews, I hope you didn't exert yourselves to get it done! (Pun fully intended)
I really depend on these reviews to get me ready for the pre release weekend, and I find the more prepared I am, the better I do.
this was such a great set
Would you play the pinger land in a mono-red deck? If so, how many assuming you could get as much as you want?
Cancel is a 1 of in a control deck always. You want to have 2 or 3 Essence Scatter and then 1 Cancel and as many of the cycling counter as possible. The only deck that can get away with 2 Cancel is a green blue ramp deck that uses the 3 mana flash cat as well.

Oashra Cultivator is meant to eat up those -1-1 counters then get sacced for a land
I think Seraph of the Suns' power is also less effective because of how many -1/-1 counters are in the format. That is relevant when damage hits the stack which is why I think black red looks like the best archetype even with embalm looking busted.
What does the monuments reduction cost for creature spells reduce colorless or a specific color
I want more feedback on doomed dissenter. I think they totally breezed over the synergy with cards that put -1/-1 counters on your own creatures. I would drop a 5/4 haste crocodile then turn my two drop into a 2/2.
I think open into wonder could be great if you target your opponent's creatures to just draw.
I was on a Prerelease and I can say Edifice of Authority lead my to a lot of wins.
Do the dual cards count twice when adding up instants and sorceries in your graveyard?
Isn't the white monument pretty interesting on the green black -1 your monster deck?
I wonder if they'll ever add the play speed options to the mobile app. Listening to this at nat speed is a bit of a pain
what about the beetle that takes counters away, with consuming fervor on it and a green cartografer so that it has trample...
Can Cartouche of Solidarity (The white one) give the token it creates the buff?
you forgot the most important fing about zenith seeker - ITS A BIRD WIZARD that makes it insta A
Hynek Ožana well we couldnt get Storm crow because it would be too good for standard. besides it puts a 20 turn clock even in limited !
I want to try the red monument in sealed. Giving every creature an ETB of rummage sounds pretty dece to me. It could turn all my extra lands into action. :) Also embalm + aftermath means you somewhat negate part of the drawback of discarding so it's almost like you drew 1.5 cards.
Making a spreadsheet. Did they actually grade Haze of Pollen??
Brad Jackson Marshall mentioned it at D, and they both said it was mostly unplayable, but might board it in against certain decks.
put the blue and white cartouche on the hexproof crocodile :P
Arnaud Deniger I'd think the green one would be better than the blue
Play a 5-color Crocodile tribal deck with all the Cartouches :D
Lull was a 2 mana green fog that had cycling 2.
Lets say a 2/2 zombie is attacking and gets blocked by 7/7 wurm then u cast Time to reflect, im assuming the snake has already done the damage so the zombie dies? or does it get exiled b4 the damage is done?
Rodrigo Miguel You can cast it after blockers were declared but before the damage, wurm will be exiled and the zombie will survive.
i think that God-Pharaoh's Gift will be a card in the second split, i was realy confused about this too lool
You can have doomed dissenter soak 2 or mby even 3 -1/-1 counters and end up with a 2/2 black zombie
You don't sacrifice Doomed Dissenter, you put your -1/1 counters on it and get a bear afterwards.
Marshall loves the 4/4 Flying Man O' War - Surprise! >.
Well...we should all love it.
for my daily nonsense pleasure:
385 is my favourite three digit number!! besides the triples 111, 222, 333 etc... :D
you can over kill soul stinger to kill things bigger than it.
How does Enigma Drake interact with, say....Aftermath split cards? 2 power for each one, right?
Juniper Clark the release notes say its only counts as one
Ah, too bad. I thought I had cracked it.
the simple answer to your question is; no.
split cards are, everywhere but on the stack, one card with the properties of both halves. Commit//memory for example; commit is an instant with CMC 4 and memory is an aftermath sorcery with CMC 6. in your hand, graveyard, library, or exile commit//memory is both an instant and sorcery with CMC 10.
I feel they are going to change their minds about the monuments when they get to playing the set.
can't you put -1/-1 counters each turn on your opp creatures with decimator beetle, regardless whether you have some on your own creatures? it doesnt say "target creature with a -1/-1 counter"
Yes, you're correct.
henkdachief Yes, as long as a creature you control has at least on -1/-1 counter, you can remove one and place it on to a creature the defending player controls.
you don't need the counter that's the point
henkdachief You do need the counter. Both conditions need to be met to be able to use the effect.
the first condition is that you have to control a creature - you dont know how magic works.
"Decimator Beetle’s second ability can target any creature you control, not just
one with a -1/-1 counter on it. It’ll put a -1/-1 counter on the
opponent’s creature even if there isn’t one to remove from your
creature."
Can a creature receive more -1/-1 counters than it has toughness before it dies?
Yes, because the counters are placed simultaneously.
Best thing about censor is having 2 of them. Cycle one and watch your opponent play right into the 2nd copy.
My favourite quote from this:
"Sacrificing a creature when you're not winning the game is a good way of loosing a game."
Sounds simple but theres a lot of depth to that statement.
Sacred cat is basicly a gain 2 life, block 2 creatures and pay (white)(white)
I like how painted bluffs lets you "bluff" any card in the set. I still agree that it's horrible but I like the card's name.
Seraph of the Suns vs. Stinging Shot.
arent those cats that make you trow away your gravejard amazing against embalm gravedigger decks?
Electrify looks so pathetic compared to Bombard and Spit Flame... and Lava Coil... and Heartfire.
Welcome to Amonkhet constructed
Oshra cultivator gets to eat -1-1 counters if you are in for that
They talked about it 2 seconds after I commented lol
I don't think that i would ever want to take floodwaters over whiplash trap, unless i have a lot of cycling triggers...
Green looks soooo op same with blue black if u get the right pieces ... dare I say
when I saw brute strength all I could think about was how much worse it is than titans strength from theros block...
Jedidiah Suntheimer While it is generally worse, trample will win you games out of nowhere
I really hope that people put more sacred cats in their decks for me to beat them.
great ! :)
I wish Wotc made a Snapembalmer Cleric, that when ETB gives Embalm to target creature on your graveyard equal to its cost... would be sooooooo funny
lol
It couldn't have Flash as you can Embalm only as a sorcery, but I'd absolutely like to see a card that did something like that.
You always have Back To The Brink I guess?
vizier of deferment - i think u forgot exert + blink and exert again next turn.
Oh yeah - I started swallowing swords, got to damage eventually.
Peter Klein Nice, I'm glad it worked out to be actually useful! I think I even undervalued the fixing and ramp. Also as you said blocks a fair deal of early drop creatures, which is important when you need time to do bigger things. Even the pros misevaluate things :)

Great set review as always guys :)
I it just me, or is almost every card a c+?
Are you sure you read Trueheart twins correctly? Whenever you exert a creature ALL YOUR CREATURES get 1 power. Not just the twins. It's a 4/4 that mass pumps.
And it triggers whenever you exert any creature so it could easily pump the team multiple times!
Exactly. I think they mistook it for just pumping itself. There's no other explanation for equating it to a 4/5 menace for 5 mana.
That's exactly what they said though.
Well, they read it you mean. At this point they're reading the cards almost mechanically. I mean they consider it a D or even less. It just doesn't make any sense to me unless they misinterpreted it.
No, listen from 3:37:50 to 3:38:25
They didn't misinterpret it, it's just not that good.
I think you're the one misinterpretting what they said though. They're not saying it's bad and will never work, they're just saying that it needs a lot of set-up for not that great of a pay-off.
Do you really think bitterblade warrior deserves a lower grade than Harsh mentor?
"Bloodlust Inciter F"

Cartouche of zeal Has blood in it
oshhra cultivator turn one, exemplar of strenth turn 2 dump the -1/-1 counters onto your useless creature 4/4 turn 3. Questions? won me loads of games at the pre release. use oshhra as a -1/-1 dump stroke chump blocker. loads of green cards put a -1/-1 counter on a creature this is your creature in limited.
forsake the worldly straight up exiles the old gods lol
marshall's such a yes man lol
Sixth Sense and Curiosity/Keep Sense are not the exact same effect.
All americans say Nitch. it's wrong. if you're going to use a foreign word you might aswell use it correctly, great job on these vids tho! love em
3:01:47 Marshall wins this one ...
Red looking pretty poorly together with white. Black looks bombstrong.
Why does Oashra Cultivator need to both tap and sac for it's ability to work? Like couldn't you just pay 2G and sac it? What does tapping it before sacing really accomplish here?
Also why do I care, this card is bad.
Danny Pagano It means that not only is it a 4 mana rampant growth it's a 4 mana rampant growth with summoning sickness.
