Been listening to the podcast for a while and love your content, this is the first time I've watched a set review on TH-cam, and I have to say being able to look at the cards while they are being talked about helps so much
Yeah, you can mutate onto the 1u untap jellyfish or the untaps on non-creature cast gremlin, and either one will provide a lot of card value very fast.
One note on Boneyard Lurker; it protects against the downside of mutate whereby a single removal spell kills, say, 4 of your cards, because a single Boneyard Lurker can return all 4 of them from the graveyard. It returns any one of them, and since they were by definition all mutate creatures, mutating each of them onto the lurker returns another. So stacking a big mutant and getting it removed can be completely undone by a topdecked lurker.
You've prefaced the show by stating this set is very complicated, but I would argue it could be the most complicated set ever. Due to the extreme power level of decks, your "average" bunch of creatures bunch of removal deck just doesn't cut it in this format. I've played closed to 20 pod drafts so far on mtga and read up on others, who've done a lot of them as well thoughts, here is the decks that (at this moment) shape the format: 1. companion decks, almost all of them can be used 2. blue/green based mutate decks 3. zenith flare cycling (w/r or jeskai) 4. Decks that REALLY got there on card quality. Maybe 1 in 15 or 20 decks regardless of color can get there, but those are not the "common" strong decks in the format. The avegare pod is less likely than not to allow for one of them. From my experience about 40% of the decks in the format have been in this category, but I would expect that number to go higher as players get better and figure the format out. There is 10 companion cards at rare, the key cards in mutate and cycling are merely uncommon... There might even be some other archetype joining the top tiers that isn't properly discovered yet (I saw some talk about rakdos porcuparrot deathtouch decks for example) Because of how strong the good archetypes are compared to the "classic" deck, you should in this format always strive to be one of those from EACH seat. That means - staying open to companions!! Each card should be evaluated by how many companion decks it can go into in it's respective color, Cycling 1 cards should be priorited over the average playable, because they keep you open to a switch to Zenith Flare and also help you dig to the more "busted" cards in your deck that you will need to combat the strong stuff your opponents will be doing, jeskai color cycling 1s especially. Mutate creatures in blue and green are way better than in the other colors. Yes this could be said about any fomat, but this format's power level is so high that it truly matters a lot. You should be always ready for a pack 3 companion in the colors you're drafting. A card in simic should be evaluated on how well it fits the mutate deck, not just it's power level in a vacuum. Cycling is way higher pritority that C- or D, not only it's one of the top decks, but it also helps you cut down to 14-16 lands to help with flood. Flood is way deadlier than usual in this format also, flood prevention cards are at a premium. 3 and 4 mana ramps are worse than usual, as cycling helps you find 5th and 6th lands easier... and a LOT of other things that flip the "normal" card evaluation on it's head. Many cards especially in the B category were overgraded, because they don't in the strong decks in their color and the decks they are made for don't perform well, some undergraded for the same reason, whole bunch of other factors messing up the "classic" way to grade. It would be great to see a followup episode in a few weeks where some grades are adjusted based on the actual state of the meta of Ikoria drafts - something that obviously cannot be accounted for before playing this crazy format a whole lot.
@@Jhit123 Yes, I drafted w/b no rares few uncommons had like four of the sergeants that LR said are pretty bad and I won five games in the pod. I usually go 50-50 on arena limited events. It was a crappy deck that had a few forced mutators as well just to reach 40 cards but it did well running stuff over. However that was day one and as the format develops it may be worse or require much tighter drafting
This set seems nuts. Funny too since I remember seeing a lot of comments talking about this set looking weak. Thanks for the breakdown of your limited/draft experiences.
2:07:06 Worth noting that Thieving Otter triggers on _any_ damage, not just combat. I was also subconsciously adding that word until you read it and I checked. Seems like this little guy is a great combo with Porcuparrot. EDIT: Ah, I see they noted that later on too.
2:05:25 I think what Marshall doesn't like are situational answers with cheap cycling. He seems to be fine with situational cards that affect his side of the battlefield. Seems like a reasonable stance.
My first draft blue was pretty open and I will say... Thieving Otter plus Dreamtail Heron is pretty good. I did have one game where they had the removal spell right away and it only got one hit in, but even then both cards replaced themselves, and I had a couple of games where I just ran away with the game because they couldn't stop the flying bird otter thing.
I think frenzied raptor will surprise people in this format with all the menace, trample, flying, first strike, etc counters that you could easily stick on him
@@lesrestall807 i will give it a try when Quick Draft opens up; losing so much money on sudden losses in Premium is just so feel-bad. i bet Spikes are going to love this format because cards are so versitile, but it's so scary when explosive turn-4s can make you lose out of nowhere. what i liked about Theros Beyond Death is that even though i'm a pretty mediocre player, it wasn't very explosive, and so games lasted a while! ikoria is really not very friendly to weak players like myself who play to relax (vs play to test skill).
Sign off was so great and close to the reality that I listened to it twice and will give the essence of it on the forum of my company. Great talk. And great episode as well...that I had to listen in at least 10 parts as I’m working and looking after the kid :p.
Also a big benefit of escape protocol is that if you have 2 mana up your opponent won't want to target your mutations because you could just flicker it except it returns to play as a bunch of creatures.
Another point on Lore Drakkis, especially compared to boneyard lurker, is that you'll almost always have a good target, because you can just cast the first card you returned and then mutate it back again. Unlike boneyard lurker, which perhaps returns 1 or 2 creatures and then your opponent pacifies it and plays a flier, lore Drakkis can get back you're card draw spell, you play it, and hey, it gets it back again
The mentor cycle is definitely potent. If you have a decent number of creatures in your deck with their keyword, it becomes a 2-3 mana repeatable pump, which can overwhelm opponents very fast if they don't have an answer.
Something I didn't think about is that you can play more than one Insatiable Hemophage on the same mutate pile. If it's the third thing you mutate onto your critter, it pings them for 3, but if you mutate another Insatiable Hemophage on top of it (should you be lucky enough to get more than 1), and then it pings them for 8. Then if you mutate it again, you hit them for 10, and that can be 5 mana for 21 damage if running UB mutate with Polywog Symbiote and the octopus (of course, the octopus is rare, so not that likely). This oddly specific example comes courtesy of some rando who took me completely off guard with it.
I've found Monstrous Step is be quite good in UG/GB decks. Giving a flier +7/+7 is an incredible way to finish the game out of no where. And in GB this interacts EXTREMELY well with menace (which there's a ton of), giving it easy 2-for-1 potential. Plus you have Excavation Mole at common which is a fantastic target for this since it naturally has trample. The fact that it cycles too is just gravy, honestly.
Mystic Subdual seems almost made for Snapdax. Turns off its powerful mutate trigger and turns a 3/5 double strike into a far less impressive 1/5 double strike.
55:00 I miss Gideon's Lawkeeper, a card I've never played with but is clearly efficient. It's nice, simple, clean, and with a goofy name that makes it unprintable nowadays; but still. For this set? I think I'd fight for a 1/2 that taps down a non-human for W (or maybe 1 colorless) - for flavor reasons; but if it's a 2 drop it certainly could have been a 2/2, and arguably with cycling 2, and the same effect costed as much.
What do you mean exactly? If it is because you think that bonder is too "passive", I disagree. Skybonder is very annoying to face against; all your removal is worse which then allows the flyers to race quickly
I got a little worried about LSV's sign off when he started talking, but it took a great turn. Everything sucks and no one is doing great right now, and that's okay. -Graham Stark
You could if the card says "may fight" because you don't make the decision until the trigger happens and then its too late to respond, which is why they changed it to "fights up to one creature" which pushes the choice back to the trigger as opposed to the resolution.
I sort of disagree on Cunning Nightbonder. That 1 cost reduction for flash spells can be pretty good. Especially since you have so much good removal with flash. Black has 2 flash creatures that can remove things on etb. Blue has capture sphere. There's even that artifact that bolts things, or the insect that enters with 3 +1/+1 counters. It's quite easy if you're blue black (and I found that you often want to be 3 colors in this set) to end up with 5 or more flash cards. And most of those can lead to pretty huge blowouts, even more so when they cost 1 less and screw with all of your opponents math. The only thing that keeps me from wanting to pick this up in my other colors is that it's "just" a 2/2. If this was a 3 mana 3/2, it'd be fucking amazing.
22:33 So... LSV... in your scenario you have a 2/2 on T2 and a 3/3 on T4, overriding your 2/2 and bringing back another 2/2. Or you can just play a T2 2/2 and play this 3/3 on T3...
3:21:00 - Can someone explain what, exactly, I'm supposed to be Mutating onto this on turn 7? Like do I put my 4/4 Mutate 1GG under this and hope to get something better x 2?
@@swampire1 I think everyone's really over-estimating the value of mutation chains; I suspect there's a critical mass you can reach where it's strategically correct to pile it on; but there aren't enough cheap/efficient mutates early in the game to make this happen. Reminds me of Oblivion (that old Xbox game). Those stupid crabs always come out of nowhere, and the battle music gets your blood pumping for no reason.
Huntmaster liger needs some love. Regal leosaur has same text but apparently its so muuch better than this. Come on guys this is a great friggin card, its like the upgrade of the leosaur.
While this a risk, I find that Huntmaster Liger works best when mutated onto a Regal Leosaur. You're giving every other creature +3/+2 minimum there, and if you mutate again, the boost gets even bigger (especially if you mutate another Liger or Leosaur onto it)
Would you consider splitting out the commons and uncommons review by colour? I'd like things a bit more bite sized myself, and you get up to 6x the views
Problem with all this "premium content" on sites. It's not very relevant for people outside of the US that don't shop with CFB (or SCG, etc.) We get zero value from that ...
They have a cheaper variant for just online content, without store credit added. That's for people outside the US. It's up to you to decide if it's worth it. I am in a low magic period, so I don't buy it, but when I play a lot I find it worth a few euros a month.
Just curious. Other than the pictures being there do you focus on the content of the video or the quality of the video more or defined by the pictures?
Alright well that’s good to hear. I somehow doubt that you’re actually buying the cards. Before you claimed to be ‘poor’ and actually threw out your address for free cards.
11:15 - I'm not sure I like this fight template. It's wordier, and a drawback. As previously worded, your Giant Growth can save your creature... you scare off the attacker. Now? Your Giant Growth kills the fighter. In both cases you save your creature, but in one your opponent's creature also goes down... Fight is already a pretty complicated, rarely useful ability - Bite is preferable (mechanically, not flavorfully), and fight right now costs maybe one green. Making it worse at this point just makes it limited filler.
I have to give huge thumbs up to LSV for the ending. I think that you are completely right and anyone blaming anyone for not learning new skill in the middle of this crisis is a complete douchebag.

Want LSV's set review ? Pay
I really don't think making everything interesting on their website paid-for is gonna have the effect they think it's gonna have...
Yup. I know they are hurting for money but they’re biggest selling point was free content.
It's the very same thing people got mad at wizards, putting something that we've gotten free for years behind a pay wall. Keep giving us the free stuff, make something new to put behind a pay wall
@@arenkai yeah the last time i was on CFB, you had to go back almost a week to find the last "Free" article. And it was a pauper article with almost no relevance to like 75% of the magic community.
I have been loving this set (perhaps cuz I have been drafting for free since friday and creating new accounts when i whiff)! Just wish that they never made the companion cards rare. Aside from that, this set is maad complex and 5 color good stuff is an option.
Are these available in written form anywhere?
I was looking for the same thing...
Do you have a list of those ratings somewhere ?
If you want to pay money to see them, yes. They're on Channel Fireball, which recently locked all of LSV's stuff behind a paywall
LMFAO been listening to this over the past few days and just got to Wilt section. lololol "Destroy 20,000 enchantments"
Thanks for the signoff, LSV.
it would have been nice to have had the show before the mtgArena release. But still a great show ofc
It was actually uploaded earlier on the lrcast website.
"Did you say *sit* on them?" lmao
in arena i got in human draft given like 3+ in one go of farfinder as like 6th pick they rly not pick it xD but i also got 4 blood curdle often as 8th pick ... how much of them are to many ? xD
Same, it was before the set review I am not that good but... I got passed so many but ended up w/b humans and didn't play them. It was hilarious though felt like bow/Smith or the secret keeper.
But seriously why does a crab have flash? It's a crab.
Suddenly, it's there. Then what?
Sudden enemy crab
Reminds me of Oblivion (that old Xbox game). Those stupid crabs always come out of nowhere, and the battle music gets your blood pumping for no reason.
Crab... Battle...
'Cause it's flashy?
Adjacently relates reconnaissance mission, bident of thassa, ohran frosfang etc are great in edh with any deck you plan on attacking with creatures
That 10 $ a month offer would be perfect for me, but what is your delivery fee to Poland?
I would email them it's more likely they will respond.
I went 2-3 on my first draft :(
Man, that 3 year pause really made me rusty, I lost all my drafting basics
I need to get back in the saddle asap
I also went 2-3 my first run, and I'm used to coming in 1st or 2nd at prereleases. This set seems really hard to evaluate.
aw, i miss seeing marshall and lsv's faces..
Where's the rares set review?
It doesn't make flavor sense that mutate can't affect humans as if humans aren't affected by things that affects beasts/animals.
Shoreshark Redemption!
Red white cycling is easily the beat deck. Don’t even need rares all the commons are so good
Every deck is the best deck when it curves out, starting hand matters so much in this format
I just despair when I see that 2/3 tapper on cycle. I've probably unreasonably wasted removal taking that guy out!
Man, is there a place to get these grades to read?

Blistersplit Gremlin seems better if you have Deathtouch token creators already in your deck.
Colin Love it certainly does, especially of you ignore that it doesn’t target creatures!
Best use I've found for it is that it can be used to untap Parcelbeast by casting a noncreature spell.
You're giving every other creature +3/+2 minimum there, and if you mutate again, the boost gets even bigger (especially if you mutate another Liger or Leosaur onto it)
3:16:44 The humans are the real monsters it seems
Would you consider splitting out the commons and uncommons review by colour? I'd like things a bit more bite sized myself, and you get up to 6x the views
e-a-t-e-r-w-o-l-v-e-r-i-n-e is significantly better than pyroceratops since you can cycle or cast your spells first and then play it.
"We now have some of our content as Pro Content" You mean ALL OF THE FUCKING CONTENT? There's like 3 free articles a week.
Any thoughts on Babygodzilla?
It sucks I like king ceaser ancient guardian it's 35 cent non foil plus 78 cents shipping
Problem with all this "premium content" on sites. It's not very relevant for people outside of the US that don't shop with CFB (or SCG, etc.) We get zero value from that ...
They're US businesses and WOTC actively discrouages people shipping product overseas tho
They have a cheaper variant for just online content, without store credit added. That's for people outside the US. It's up to you to decide if it's worth it. I am in a low magic period, so I don't buy it, but when I play a lot I find it worth a few euros a month.
@marshal, a mare is female :)
TMA Deviant it is odd though because it is also an elk and female elks don’t have antlers and aren’t referred to as mares.
I enjoy this video layout . Just the laughing at cards bugs me sometimes but nice video
Yea they laugh a lot. I can see why it might bother you. I like it because it shows some true personality
Just curious. Other than the pictures being there do you focus on the content of the video or the quality of the video more or defined by the pictures?
@@k0olmini11 I listen to info.on card and rating on my tv real big if I like I pull out phone and buy this video layout is best
Alright well that’s good to hear. I somehow doubt that you’re actually buying the cards. Before you claimed to be ‘poor’ and actually threw out your address for free cards.
I'll have you know I 3-0ed with a deck with 6 whisper squads
LSV...your jokes were on for the LR. Marshall missed some good ones. It was a cross of Woody allen telling dad jokes.
3:18:14 "Put the rest in your bottom"
Love how marshall hates cycling on situational overruns but not situational draw spells. Very onbrand.
Thank goodness he's not a set designer
11:15 - I'm not sure I like this fight template. It's wordier, and a drawback. As previously worded, your Giant Growth can save your creature... you scare off the attacker. Now? Your Giant Growth kills the fighter. In both cases you save your creature, but in one your opponent's creature also goes down...
Fight is already a pretty complicated, rarely useful ability - Bite is preferable (mechanically, not flavorfully), and fight right now costs maybe one green. Making it worse at this point just makes it limited filler.
Jesus Finally. I was starting to think something was wrong.
Lurking deadeye is gross with first strike.
some decks need a cancel
I have to give huge thumbs up to LSV for the ending. I think that you are completely right and anyone blaming anyone for not learning new skill in the middle of this crisis is a complete douchebag.
Maybe you are a lounging orca cat and eat pouncing shoresharks for snacks.
