How to Treat Giardia in Cats (Part 1)

- This video is about the journey I had to go thru as I was finding out the most pain-free way in terms of how to treat giardia in cats. Feline Giardia (or cat Giardia) is when they have these remarkably smelly poop and liquidly (sometimes bloody) poo that won't go away. The parasite Giardia in cats poop is the main culprit for spreading it, as they can dig the litter and lick their paws, thus literally eating poop particles.
You might think that cats with parasites symptoms might be all the same... But no, unlike tapeworms where you actually see the worm as vomit or poo.... Wrong! When this parasite in cats is present, all you see is really just loose stills in cats.
Giardia in stool is a easy problem to eradicate when you have one or two cats, but when you have a society of cats it can be a bit tricky. Not to mention that if Giardia in kittens can be more dangerous as diahearra can sometimes be life-threatening to kittens. For adult cats, it's still not a good thing to have of course...
Note: The giardia parasite in our case is a bitchhhhhh, the journey was far from a smooth sail. And note that I can't find a photo with all 8 of my cats in it, so had to use one I found to illustrate... 8 meows... LOL

Thanks so much, it means a lot to me! Hope you guys enjoyed the video!
Thank you so much for sharing your experience! I am a proud owner of 3 cats and i was dealing with giardia for 4 months with no success. I was giving the same meds separately or in combination to my kitten and i never saw any steady improvement for months! Then, completely desperate, I came across your video and this is the only thing that actually helped! Needless to say, my vets didn't obviously care much and never mentioned anything about the intensive cat litter cleaning that is so much needed. Thanks to your video I changed my strategy and we are now all guardia free for two months! I have no words to express my gratitude! Wish you and your sweet cats all the best! THANK YOU!
Me too! This video helped me a lot, thank you very much 🙏🙏🙏
My English is not very good. My cat was vomiting and had diarrhea. I took him to the vet. He said it was a hairball. 1 week passed and he took antibiotics for 4 days. I took him to another vet and he was positive for giardia. Now he has been receiving treatment for 2 days. He also has a bit of a fever. How did you get over it? Could you write to me briefly?
Thank you so much for this video! I just brought my kitty home and she got this diagnosis and I've been stressed about how to take care of her. But this was so informative! (Also hearing a fellow canto cat mom just makes me so happy~)
Hey girl let me know how it went for you, sometimes this can be hard to rid in multicat houses.... Welcome to my small channel full of quirky fun, meow~
Girl! Thank you so much! Im doing this with my cats. I foster and rescue. One of the joys of rescuing stray cats is giardia LOL. Ive never dealt with this before. Appreciate your video!💗🐈
Obviously its something very common in places where there are many cats... OMG so hard to treat~
Thank you for the video, very helpful! I have been fighting giardia with my 6 cats now for 5 months and I’m starting to feel hopeless, did you ever get rid of the giardia in your cats/home?
I did, did you have success?
Thank you for posting this!! Currently going through the same with my cat and new kitten, we are all so exhausted from the cleaning and medicating process lol. The vet reccomend keeping them separate (which isn’t really possible for me because I live in a small apartment) I was wondering if you were able to get rid of it without separating your cats??
It worked for us after two rounds, so it's good!
21:11 "Is our relationship ruined?" lol
I admire your patience. I just have two cats and I'm having such a bad time giving them their medicine. Did you change the litter everything they pooped?
Every single time.... haaaa it was complete hell but worth the while
I just treated Giardia last couple weeks,I have 7 cats as well, I don't think its over yet. It was just overwhelming.
let me know what happened in your journey, I would love to learn from you also! Thanks so much for helping keep them healthy. How did you find out they have it btw? Let me guess someone have loose stools?
I brought a kitten in 4 months ago, she had that. But the symptoms wasn't clear until a month ago.
Were you able to finally beat giardia?
Firsttttt love ur vids so much they are super useful
I hope it’s fun to watch also... wow you are always the first to comment... Amazing!
MeloCat aww thx
Are they all recovered? Mine 2cats got too I wanna cry it’s quite hard to clean everything thing they stepped on. Such a busy work all day! Thank you so much for sharing this video! Its helpful
they are all good after 2 rounds of this~ phew thank god~
Did your cats recovered? I am dealing with this since December and sometimes I feel no progress, some nights I cry, this is too much for me and my 2 kitties
I have a job, I can't change the litter box every time they poop, I feel like I can't defeat this.
How many cats do you have? Separating in different rooms for a few days can do too
@@MeloCathello I'm extremely worried I have a house full of rescue kitties. One of the kitties was brought to rescue and tested positive for Giardia. There are 23 in total I'm in desperate need of help there's no way I can vet or treat all at once. Maybe 2 per month if I'm lucky any help or direction would be very helpful.
Where's part 2?
How did my cat even get infected with this stuff of nightmares???? This is unreal.
I have an indoor cat that has NEVER been in contact with any other animal or been outside of my apartment since I bought him from the breeder.
Now (with a full-time job) I have to clean everything in my apartment every day and I wont even be sure that it's going to work. Not to mention I'm probably infected myself too because I had no idea something like this would even be a possibility (genuinely thought he was allergic to something) and I may have picked my nose, rubbed my beard or touched my face in any way after handling my cat, as I do not normally wash my hands excessively if all I'm doing is wandering around in my own apartment.
Worst part is... without knowing how this could even happen it's likely to happen again from some unknown source
I think one of the reasons can be drinking tap water.... I'm sure there's other ways like investing contaminated soils or stools
Thank you for showing us how to treat! My bf’s kitten has been diagnosed with giardia 😭
Fret not, with patience it's easily treatable~ meow ~ chin rubs from hk
@@MeloCat that’s what I told him too it takes time and patience. Unfortunately we haven’t gotten the meds yet so we’re just throwing out the poop and litter.
How many meows do you have?
@@MeloCat I have 1 cat at home but I’m scared to bring her to aid my bf’s at my house to risk my other pets
To aid your bf?
I am living this same nightmare now. :( I have 4 cats and i rescued 4 stray kittens who brought this inside and it was so hard to keep them away from my cats since I live in a very tiny space and man, so now I have 8 cats to treat for giardia now. This has me emotional and stressed. Was the med quite expensive? (if you dont mind me asking) and how did you sanitize everything in the home?
Its tough but can be done (we did it). Mes are not expensive but needs repeat dose (ask your vet about the single dose one, there is such thing). Keeping the litter box scooped obsessively scooped and washed did the job (literally I threw out all litter after each poo poo and washed the pan)- works great!
Hi. Thanks for this!
I have 8 cats (and two dogs!)
2 sphynx, 2 Siamese, 3 bengals and a Persian.
I’ve been told to bleach clean EVERYTHING and hot wash /steam mop bedding/ cat trees / litter boxes ect….
I’m waiting on medication from the vets.
I’m dreading trying to do all the meds!! 🥺😖 x
No need for the bleach it will irritate your cats more than anything. Just soap and hot water is enough, for bedding just use a streamer you use for clothes, that will do the job. No need for any harsh cleaners as any residues are bad for them let alone the horrible smell. Trust me they will thank you for this~ just steam the heck out of everything and throw what you can in the washing machine~
Thank you for this advice! I will take this on board and steam everything- and wash things in machine on hot wash - can I use non bio or do I need bio? X
@@MeloCat Thank you for the steamer recommendation!! Just got the diagnosis of giardia today from my foster kitten who came from a hoarder home...picking up the meds tomorrow morning for her and my other two girls.
I did all by myself, no help. I had a lot spitting too I just felt sometimes helpless.
hey you hang in there, it's not easy w many cats you might need more tests and treatments, its the same here~ Rinse and repeat~
@@MeloCat I thought I got rid of the giardia , but not. They are all showing the symptoms again.😩😟
I wonder if the vet can give one shot by needle syringe that stays working for a week. They can do that with other antibiotics.
There was this med that is single dose only, but doesnt work for all cats~
I have 10 cat, 9 of which are in one room to run through this process. I'm pre-stressed.
I’m very curious how things have gone for you and your cats, I am still fighting giardia with my 7 cats. Were you able to get rid of it?
@@perrinowens9352 Yes, we beat it, but with the number of cats we have, it was very laborious. The key is keeping the litter boxes clean. When they poop, you will need to clean the boxes and sterilize each time. We ended up using several litter boxes and just watching them as they are being used. It's doable to clear it up, but it's a lot of work with multiple cats.
I am happy to hear you finally got rid of it, that gives me hope. Thank you!
😪 i have 3 cats, and just 1 have it , since july, I have give him a lot of different medicine, it’s so difficult, make me want to cry 😥
It's stubborn, and did you seperate the infected cat from the others?
@@MeloCat no, they are all together , but just 1 have diarrea. Half sold half liquid.
I guarantee they all have it
Should I bath my cats everyday? If so what should I use?
I’m also trying some herbal/natural remedies alongside the panucur vet prescription meds.
Not sure if it’ll work but I’m thinking worth a try x
No need to bath them, just change the litter frequently and scoop very frequently, wash the litter boxes often if they got giardia, no need other natural remedies just the meds from the vet is fine ~
Well - same here now. Second attempt at my home now... :((
How are your cats now? how did they recover? how long?
It took a several rounds but it's good after month!
We use a pill cutter. Makes splitting pills so much easier.
Hi! i'm hoping to get answer to my question. My kitten of 5months is diagnosed with Giardia... Can I just wipe his paws every after poop? Just to save the litter sand ? I also clean it after the poop and the scoop everytime . Is it okay? Or I should change everytime?
Change it ~
My 4 months old kitten has diagnosed with giardia medicine not working Metronidazole caused more daerhea
Hi im curious how your kitten is doing. My 4mo kitten has giardia i think.
@marsha160 Alhumdulillah now she is healthy I washed litter box with bleach on daily basis and vet suggested drontal cat one tablet break it into 2 peices half tablet only once a week or flagyl syrup 2 times a day for 3 days only other half peice of tablet after week or if there is diarrhea you can give ospor ampule half 2 times a day
My kitty just got diagnosed with giardia and I already fear this nightmare.
Did you keep the cats in one room or all around the house?
I have two little kids and I cannot keep them from putting their hands into their mouthes. So our kitty stays in the bathroom 😫
Did you change clothes after handling the cats?
Also are they all still giardia free?
I have anxiety and OCD, so the thought og having parasites all around the house is terrifying.
Oh it's not too bad, so here is what we did and it worked, so you can surely reserve the OCD to other areas where it matters:
- wash human hands yes after scooping and wash the scoops too, soap and water will do;
- throw out the litter as often as possible, meaning you keep less than usual in the pan as long as they are willing to pee and poo, and toss out after the do #2 and wash the pan ( a little tedious but ok, just try to stick to it as much as possible)
- if you only have two cats, easy, just keep them separate for now and treat separately ( as grooming each other can spread it)
- also see if you can keep separate food and water dishes for now
Just remember it's usually spread from fecal matter, water and grooming each other
Follow the above and treat separately, be diligent w the litter box, you should be good after the course of meds is done.
If feeling insecure can get vet to check them for clearance before reintegrating again
Hope it helps!
You need a pill cutter! Or an exacto knife/razor blade
10 cat household and we have Giardia... we've treated 2x already and it's still here! I'm beyond upset. This is #3 treatment for all cats, so expensive:(
Did you ask your vet about the option that is only one pill?
Very helpful 👍
Tks
During the cure give your cat with a premix. No carbs no sugar will help I heard.
Nice info video for cats sister 😻
omg im watching my life here. I have 5 cats and 3 kittens with this parasite. I'm exausted not taking care of myself either.Whats the answer because 5 of them wont let me touch them anymore and dont like wet food.
Thank you so much for this video. I was literally having anxiety since I never dealt with rhe diagnosis. I was wondering I only have one cat that has that diagnosis should i still remove him from the room he was since its contaminated ? and put him another room? or I can just clean the room and put him back in that room?
Just keep throwing out the litter and wash the bins is ok, no need to keep separate room if you just have one cat
@@MeloCat Thank you so much for your respond! I truly appreciate ❤️ I love your video . should I clean the room completely too ?
Wash stuff in washing machine and toss in dryer, and non leather couches and upholstery use steam is sufficient, and 1% bleach for surfaces ( but remember to rinse well, otherwise it ends on their paws and they lick it off)
No worries, welcome to my cat fam! Hope that helps!
But more importantly test for giardia after the whole course of meds is done, coz sometimes it doesn't treat it even w the full course ~
Thank you! ❤️ also how often should I wash stuff in the washing machine? and clean?
As often as possible and litter throw it out after each use, and wash the pans and scoopers after each use. It's tedious but it's worth it
Should I give probiotics during the cure?
Hello,
I am French and I use a translator.
I also rescue all the cats in difficulty, in France of course, but also in Greece, USA, Italy, etc.... And the last rescue 1 month ago brought back giardiasis. So there, it's a nightmare.
I have a question: I do like you, monitoring the litter boxes, medications, etc.... And I lack sleep 😂
But my question is that here, I am asked to disinfect everything non-stop, several times a day: floor, linen, sofa, top of the cupboards, chairs, bed, etc... with Sanytol. But when you have cats that go everywhere, I don't know how to get by.
And I am also asked to wash the cats.
I need your advice because monitoring the litter boxes, medications, it's already complicated, but how to disinfect everything non-stop?
How many cats do you have in your establishment right now may I ask? So I have an idea
I've 6 cats ans 3 dogs that I have saved.
Thanks you for helping me
Can I send you email because I dont know how using youtube very well
Sure but my email is down for the last few days, do you have instagram? Is that easier for you
I don't know Instagram, sorry. My new kitten had a fever of 41°. He's a very young 10-month-old cat that I picked up dying in the street 1 month ago. I just got back from the vet. and I'm wondering if his 10-day treatment with Metronizadole has made him even more fragile. I just brought him home and I'm going back to the vet tomorrow
Did you need to bathe them?
A few but mostly no
How did you clean its hair?? I have a blind cat feom steeet and had been so hard because she dint see at all when shee poop
Hmmmm this is a tough one... can you train it to use the right spot?
Have a very sick kitten with giardia. She wont eat. How can i stiumlate appetite
You prob need to talk to your vet first coz I think it's more than that, since not eating is usually a sign of something much much bigger!! Please go see a vet
Cute cats cute girls
you're allergic to cats!!!! how do you manage though wow?
Number one allergen on my list, really just toughed it out all these years
Buy pill cutter
