  • How To Get Rid Of Giardia In Dogs. I Cured My Frenchie! Giardia is a microscopic parasite that causes the diarrheal illness known as giardiasis. Giardia (also known as Giardia intestinalis, Giardia lamblia, or Giardia duodenalis) is found on surfaces or in soil, food, or water that has been contaminated with feces (poop) from infected humans or animals.

"Giardia intestinalis infection is a common cause of diarrhoea in humans and other mammalian species throughout the world. This report describes a case of a dog suffering from diarrhoea, infected with G. intestinalis, effectively treated with azithromycin. Azithromycin is an azalide, semisynthetic macrolide antibiotic having a large spectrum of activity against bacterial pathogens and some protozoa. In this case, Giardia infection in a dog was confirmed by microscopic examination and PCR. Sequencing of the detected Giardia amplicon confirmed infection with assemblage A-I. The dog received azithromycin administered at dose of 10 mg/kg per os, once a day for 5 days. After the therapy, the diarrhoea stopped. Effectiveness of the treatment was also confirmed by PCR and microscopic examination. This is the first report on the therapy of canine giardiosis with azithromycin. It seems that azithromycin can be considered as promising antibiotic for the control of Giardia infection in dogs."

Can you please do a video talking step by step about how you cleaned with thr ammonia and how to use it safely? It won’t discolor your fabrics or damage your washing machine? Did you use it to clean the crate and floors? That would be super helpful, if you’re able to share. Thanks for talking about your experience with this!

Julia, thank you so much for your video, we are experiencing “EXACTLY” the same problem, like everything you said in the video, has happened for us for about 3 months and our girl still has the problem. I have 2 questions: first, do we need to get the Azitromisin from a vet or we can get it over the counter? And second, how should we use Ammonia for washing everything (like should we add some to the washing machine while we’re washing everything)?

I’m sorry your little fur baby was sick for so long. He has wonderful parents that love and care for him so well.💖
My Frenchie, Harry, passed about a month ago. He was the same color and looked a lot like your Frenchie.💝
Harry passed from natural causes. He was home with loved ones. He wasn’t with strangers in a strange place.
I thank God for that blessing and I’m so grateful.🙏🏻🐶💖
    I sure miss my Harry…💔
You may want to look into good probiotics and other things for your Frenchie. I know the type of meds he was on can be hard on the digestive system and for so long.
A good canine chiropractor, especially for Frenchies, is something I wish someone would have told me of when I got Harry.
A good chiropractor to keep your Frenchie aligned when he’s young is important. If he’s kept in alignment he will have less or no issues when he gets older. Unlike some older Frenchie do.
Our chiropractor is in Northridge one day a week at Northridge Animal Medical Center on Reseda Blvd. She’s in different areas during the week. So maybe she might be closer to you in a different day? Her fee is fair and she doesn’t “over treat” like some chiropractors.
I’ve had better luck with vets that use “natural” cures or treatments first, before medication. Plus any vaccines needed are “mercury free” and they don’t cost more.
There’s the top Vet on TH-cam and he uses natural cures and treatments for his clients and he is fantastic! He will answer your questions if he sees them too.
He has a lot of great videos about things that are so simple and cost much less than supplements. He does a lot of preventative care with simple foods too.

I am grateful to find your video. I have my new pup less than a week and find out she is Giardia positive. We are a few days in and I am already beside myself. She has trained so well I’m only a few days. But this parasite is making the joy disappear. She is eating her poop when we turn for a moment, it’s like she holds it until she is alone just to feast 😩😩😩.
She just finished 5 day treatment. Now we wait 2 weeks and treat again, but after watching your experience I will have a chat with vet.
I have noticed within 48 hours her bones are showing through her flesh. She is only 3 lbs so I am fearful her health will suffer.

My German Shepherd pup had Giardia. 2 treatments with the vet's antibiotics and she still came up positive. After watching your video I told our vet that I wanted her on the azythromycin. He said he had never used it for giardia, but gave it a try. Her next poop test 4 weeks later came back negative. My vet said "you cannot argue with these results". So I want to thank you for posting this video. It saved my baby from more rounds of antibiotics, that probably would only have had a negative effect on her poor "little" gut bacteria.

We have a Cairn Terrier who was diagnosed with giardia at around 3 months old. He did eat his own poop as well but was fine at the time with no loose stools. We went through one round of treatment and tested again with a positive result. So we thought the vet was probably taking us for a ride because he showed no symptoms... After a few months, when he was 10 months old, he pooped some dark green gooey stuff one night. He was in so much pain that he yelped. His immune system took a toll as well. He had reactive lymphocytes symptoms, big bumps all over his body... We don't know for sure if that's caused by giardia but it certainly doesn't help with his health condition. Last week, he pooped liquid with fresh blood. I freaked out and felt so hopeless until I watched your video! We'll request our vet to prescript Azithromycin. Hopefully I can update good results as well. Thank you so much for sharing your experience!!

I was talking to my vet today, and found out that a lot of times, there's a false-positive of giardia when the animal actually has another parasite called crypotosporidium. It must look almost identical on a fecal test, and symptoms are the same. The treatment for crypo is...Azithromycin.
I'm wondering if your vet consistently mistook your dog's crypo as giardia and never thought it might be something else, despite the giardia treatment failing to work. That's on him; it's okay for a doctor not to know everything, but he should have asked for a specialist in giardia after the first failed attempt. I'm glad you got the right meds to do the job regardless.

I was waiting for you to mention diatomaceous earth because i mentioned it in my search. Anyhow, i had giardia issue for years. Metronidazole was completely useless and i think was only damaging to their internal organs. I have 6 cats and it is impossible to clean home of something microscopic so i found something i hope that will help us recover and keep it at bay. I give diatomaceous earth to all of my cats and so far they stopped having runny stool and vomiting. I add DE to their biscuits and drinking water on regular basis and give capsuls dipped into coconut oil by mouth.

we got our 5 month shepherd mix from a local shelter. she had been diagnosed Giardia 2 months ago. after 2-3 rounds of antibiotic treatment, even test negative, her diarrhea is still on and off, so I know none of the medications worked. The vet recommend us to do a PCR screen for my puppy, which cost over $300. we already spent a lot for vet visit, can not afford it anymore, so we refused. me and my son have to supervise the pup overnight because she would poop 3-8 times(no poop during daytime weird). it made us extremely tired and desperate. We want to treat her by ourselves, happy to find this video. did some research online, said azithromycin could cause some side effects, such as vomitting, diarrhea etc. so a little scared to use it on our puppy. We’re going through this right now with our 9-10 week old puppy. We got her about 3 weeks ago and she has been pooping diarrhea 10-20 times a day ever since. At first we thought it was just nerves then after a week or so we called the vet and they wanted to test for parvo but that was negative, they did lots of other tests and said she had giardia. We have a 1 year old and they told us to keep her away from our son until she is better because he can catch it so unfortunately we’ve had to keep her in her cage, away from us most of the day for the last week, which i hate doing but I’d rather her be in her cage than my son get sick. We’re having the same issue of her eating her own poop when she’s in the cage and reinfecting herself. We went through one round of the treatment they gave us and it didn’t help her at all. She’s still eating normally but she’s starting to get extremely skinny. I’m gonna ask our vet about this medication today, i hope they’ll prescribe it because i am so so tired of dealing with this all the time :(

My new kitten has (hopefully had) giardia. She gets retested in a few days, but it has been hell, trying to isolate her, disinfecting everything, trying to care for her and not spread anything around. I am lucky, though, as she is not eating her pooh, and is very well house-trained. Her poop is still a little loose, but the stinky farts are almost gone and her behavior is much improved. When I first got her, I thought she was docile--she was just sick. Now she's zipping around her little room and trying to use my leg as a tree (I need to get a cat tree for her, for the sake of my calves alone).

Will see how it goes and if it is not gone I will ask for azythromycin. Going to buy ammonia today. I have been using bleach but did not know it doesn’t kill giardia. This has been a very difficult issue to eradicate. And I hope I haven’t caught it, been feeling pretty bad the last couple of days.

I think the spread could have been prevented if owners would pick up after their dogs. It’s been a very wet winter and it has spread to all these dogs. This is miserable! She’s lost a pound and her fur looks funky. Spent $200 already at the vet and they never figured it out after negative tests. I only figured it out after asking the breeder. Is it the medicine? Or the treatment protocol? Generally panacur is given 1ml per 5lb of body weight for five days. However, a study was done where infected dogs in a kennel were given Panacur for 5 days, then their areas were disinfected (bleach/water) and the dogs were bathed, THEN the dogs were treated for an additional five days and washed at the end of the ten day treatment, this resulted in 99% of the dogs testing negative. Panacur is fenbendazole 10%... There is a medicine called Safeguard (which is labeled for goats) BUT the SAME EXACT medicine (Fenbendazole 10%) which is available over the counter for about $35. The dose is the same as Panacur. Knowledge is power... and healthy pets and people is the goal! Baycox should be used as well. Even if you don't think your environment contains coccidia or giardia, better safe than sorry. And don't forget to vaccinate.

The litter we got our pup from got giardia at 4 weeks. A couple of pups didn’t make it… Our pup was a lot tinier than our other dogs at that age(same breed). She also comes from a bigger bloodline size wise. Do you think it affected her overall growth long term? Did it stunt her projected adult size? Or will she eventually get back on track to her normal projected growth rate? Reason I ask is we specifically picked her and the breeder for size . Any information is greatly appreciated . God bless

    • @JuliaCaban
      @JuliaCaban  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I don’t think giardia effected his adult size - he’s as big as his dad (30 pounds). His parents were pretty tall and heavy and he’s pretty much the same size as them now. I was worried he was getting too tall at one point - was thinking it was caused by multiple treatments of antibiotics for giardia. But now i feel like he’s pretty healthy overall. Do you know the Mg of the Zpack that they gave him. They did Metronidazole and Panacur for my dog and nothing helped. I took his metronidazole because I believed I got Giardia from him, and it worked for me but not for him. I got a two Azithromycin packs ready but I just wanted to make sure

We stopped the panacure after the 3 round. We started giving him cooked food with a dose of ginger, cinnamon, and a probiotic. Stopped going to the bathroom in his cage, diarrhea gone, no blood, and solid stools. The cinnamon is for the Giardia cysts, the ginger for the upset stomach, and the probiotic to help with his gut health.

@@PersonalizedOnesies The Holistic dr says to do this for at least 2 months. Even after improvement, do not stop. I hope your pup gets better soon 🙂

This is our second round of medication. He sleeps in the crate and he does not go pee and poop at night.
During the day when I know he has eaten could poop any minute, he is in his playpen and I am watching him all the time. But if I don't look one minute he could lick his poop. I am giving him pumpkin and sweet potato with his dry food.

Hello guys I greet you from Colombia, I am really very sad my 9-month-old Boxer has Giardia, and we did not treat him well 2 months ago that he acquired it in a small rotten water in the street, We have treated with antibiotic, bio renegerators Organew '' But nothing works now I bought Hills 'digestive care' and it makes a good poop sometimes and other times it makes it very soft .... I am desperate I see my thin dog and I do not want him to suffer this anymore !!!
