do we know why this medication hasnt taken off? are there problems? i would rather give one dose then essentially 20 doses! i am surprised i dont see more about it in my research. i am picking up some from a compounding pharmacy for my two cats tomorrow and just trying to mentally prepare...thank you!
Dear Plastickittenz, thank you for watching the video and for your comment. I cannot answer your question but will see if I can find out more for you. Good luck with your cats!
Hi Maddie's Fund! Were you able to get an answer to this? I too would love to know, as I'm dealing with feral cats and this would be SO helpful! Will any vet give me a prescription to pick it up from a compound pharmacy? I'd sure be grateful if this treatment is available! Thanks for any advice on this!
Hello Sun Soul, thank you for watching and for caring for the ferals! We sent your question to the speaker, Dr Cynda Crawford at the University of Florida and will post a response as soon as we get it.
Dear Sun Soul and Plastickittenz, Dr Crawford responded to your comments and questions. She writes: I don't have an answer for the question about why there aren't more published studies for use of secnidazole in treatment of giardia infection in cats and dogs. However, there are numerous recent and ongoing studies evaluating use of secnidazole vs. metronidazole for treatment of giardia and trichomonas infections in people. These human studies have shown that one dose of secnidazole is as effective or more effective in curing infection as multiple doses of metronidazole. With regard to a veterinarian providing a prescription for compounded secnidazole: the veterinary practice acts in all states clearly state that there must be a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship before the veterinarian can provide prescription medications. This valid lawful relationship depends on examination of the patient by the veterinarian to document the patient's condition and the rationale for prescribing a drug based on performance of diagnostic testing. The exam findings diagnostic tests, rationale and treatment prescription must be permanently recorded in a retrievable medical record that can be reviewed by the state Board of Veterinary Medicine if requested. There must also be a plan for follow-up analysis of how the patient responded to treatment. Hope this answers the questions.
Dear Maddie's Fund Education - Thank YOU for all that you do! And thank you so much for getting back to me on this. Yes, I was aware I'd have to get my vet to prescribe it, I just was surprised to find how many vets don't even KNOW about the option of Secnidazole! You can be sure I'm sharing links and documentation wherever I can find it! Thank you again for your response, and please pass my gratitude on to Dr. Crawford! ❤️
So I see that they did a study on cats have they done a study on dogs and especially like French bulldogs or breeds with the flat face your input would be greatly appreciated as I am fighting giardia every year with mostly two dogs but I have a total of six out of the six only two are the ones that are always coming up positive for giardia
Hello and thank you for watching - we are asking Dr. Crawford the answer to your question. We also found this online: "The biggest advantage to this medication is that it is given as one dose, versus metronidazole or ronidazole, which are dosed over multiple days (as many as five to fourteen days). This single dose of secnidazole can be repeated a second time within 10-14 days if necessary, but treatment is usually resolved after just the first dose."
Mirjam, thank you for watching and for your question. The medicine can be compounded by a pharmacist to enable administration to a tiny kitten. Thank you for all you are doing to help the animals!
