Perfectly clear video with a perfect result! Made my wife do the labor with her sharper eyes and steadier hands -- but then she was the one who dropped the camera and caused the problem!
Sir, I really have to thank you so much. My SX240 had the same black sceen problem, and after following your procedure it came back as brand new. Screen is brilliant and full colored. Note: the 240 model does not have the small connector located just a litte above the lens.
Followed this for my SX240HS, which has just recently started giving me trouble with a dark or black screen nearly all the time (fiddling with the on/off button seemed to temporarily get the screen back, but hard to do that while taking a picture!). I took the additional precaution of blowing out all the ribbon connector sockets using a can of compressed air, cleaned the connectors with alcohol on a Q-tip, and then put them back. One slight difference in the connectors from the SX260 shown in the video, but to be expected. No problem with the screen since I did this. Thank you very much for making this very clear and helpful video.
Just tried this fix and it worked great! I was a camera tech for a small company called Back-Bone for a while, so these small parts weren't too much a challenge. Thanks so much for this tutorial!
Rob, thanks for this great video. I followed your instructions and now the screen on my SX260HS works like new! The only minor change that I made is the approach I used to attach the small connector located behind the metal plate (it's the one that you struggled with). If you turn the camera around and insert the connector from the top, it slips right in. I actually struggled with reinserting the connector on the back plate, but after a few minutes of finessing, I got it to go in.
great video and it fixed the issue! I was constantly tapping my camera to get the display to come back on. Your video was excellent -- step by step and very detailed. Thank you!
Looks like it worked for me. The screen kept disappearing and would return if I smacked it just right or if I squeezed in in a certain way. Simple procedure with great directions and (so far) great results. Thank you!
Hi. Thanks very much for your video. The SX240 is slightly different and at first disconnecting and reconnecting the two back connectors did not change anything. Loosing the LCD panel itself by undoing the 3 screws did the work. At least for now. Maybe I jiggled some contacts by doing that. As you stated: just sort of rubbing the connectors could be enough. Thnx again!
Good video! One comment; the narrow cable(that was so difficult to re-insert) is actually for the GPS. To get to the narrow cable from the LCD you have to remove the GPS unit on the top of the camera, it's underneath there.
Thanks for sharing this Rob! great video. Our camera recently started doing this, and I will definitely be trying this before I go out and spend a bunch of $$$ on a new one!
Rob's Fixit Shop Rob, just wanted you to know that after this fairly easy procedure, it seems to be working alot better. We have been testing it indoors and out, and seems to pass the flex test. When we bend the camera and screen it stays on. It seemed to have the problem when it was in cold climate, so we'll see over time. THANKS FOR SHARING THE VIDEO!
thanks for the great video. I ended up replacing my screen after this didn't fix my problem. note that the difficult cable near the lens does not connect to the screen. it's the one on the left under the big one that was causing the problem for me.
I had the camera for a couple of years now and its been great and then the black screen problem happened on holiday recently. Its still OK most of the time but I always wonder when it happen again. Going to give this fix a try now. Fingers crossed. Update: Had to buy an extra small screwdriver (size PH00) but done it now and the camera still works! Thanks for the help.
Thanks for the teardown video. Couple of things though, you took the little cable above the lens off for no reason which doesn't make sense because it wasn't in the way of anything and you didn't actually do anything with it besides put it back. Also, if anyone goes to do this in the future note that on my camera those clips don't pop up, the ribbon cable slides in and out instead and I broke the "clips" by trying to lift them so now the camera is destroyed.
Why was it necessary to take the back side of the camera ? The connectors you cleaned were on the front side. So do you just need to just remove 1 screw to take off the front cover ?
What are the long term results of this procedure? My 260 has this issue. I don't understand how removing and reinserting the cables fixes anything. My camera spent 99% of its life in a case in a drawer. I hardly ever used it. How did anything get unseated or dirty?
can you fix mine, i love my camera but i wont take it to best buy because they want me to just buy a new camera. I just bought the sx610 and im not happy with it. i would risk fixing my 260 myself but im not that savy. all i'v done so far is take the screws out and missplace them
I tried it. The very first white connection came loose when I was reassembling the camera. Results? The screen is no longer dark, but my camera is now stuck in the "auto" mode. :-(. Could be worse I suppose. LOL
I had this problem and found a similar fix, but it wasn't any of the cables you identified. There is a second display cable that has to be reseated. You can see it from the back. Look at this video th-cam.com/video/I1O8lgQTc3M/w-d-xo.html
Well, not sure why the title of the video you posted with that link is showing as an SX260 when in reality it is a different camera (SX600) as shown when you can see the front of the camera at the beginning of the video. My SX260 does not look anything inside for that connector like the one in the video are referring.
After so many years I finally fixed my camera connection problem, thanks to your vid!! Thanks!
Mariana, glad to hear it. I put that video up so long ago I am glad it can still be useful. I really liked that camera.

we still use this cam as our dive camera and had this exact issue. your video helped to fix it even though it was posted 8 years ago! thanks a ton!
That's cool that it is still performing for you. I really liked it because it did a great job on videos. Good luck on get back up a running!
11 years after the fact and this video just helped me fix my camera. Thanks!
Wow, that is great. I really liked that camera but mine is long gone!
Just tried this fix and it worked great!

Russ Cooper Mine has worked perfectly since I did the repair. Hope it works for you, I really like the camera!
Thanks Rob, it did the trick and the camera is working again :-)
Canon had to know about this issue. My 260hs started doing it about 3 years old on a camera that was hardly ever used. Last Canon thing I ever bought.
Great video, thank you.
Do you happen to have a repair manual for that model? (I need to replace several parts)
Thanks! this was very easy to follow
Could you pleasee add a video on the location of the date time battery for this camera ?

I have a SX720 which was only released last year but I'm guessing the process would be much the same or would it?
Great! It helped me. Thank you so much!!!

I also cleaned the connector as well as reseating. The camera is long gone unfortunately, I really liked it.
wow! It worked! U da bomb!!!

wrong flash position restart the camera what is the problem
I followed your directions and now my screen is completly black... before it was just really dim,,, how can I fix this now?
I tried it. The very first white connection came loose when I was reassembling the camera. Results? The screen is no longer dark, but my camera is now stuck in the "auto" mode. :-(. Could be worse I suppose. LOL
now my screen is black. what did I do wrong?
you probably forgot to put down one of the pink flaps on the connecters

Not focussed sharp. Hard to see.
