Today we successfully paired our Indian Violet Earth Tiger these striking fossorial spiders are great Webbers and pretty easy to care for making them a great addition to any collection and are a cool stepping stone into some of the more demanding spiders.

Amazing footage! I definitely believe it's quite painful for the females however, that little fella did an excellent job. He needed a bit of time to gather his confidence once he got a glimpse of her and her size, lol, but he went for it and I believe we'll see some magnificent results from this pairing. No doubt the little stud is feeling good about his performance 👍🏻
Really cool! I think your theory about the female being startled/hurt holds more weight than the big protein meal one. It definitely makes more sense seeing how much of a barb is really going in. She might think it's a sneak attack or something, even. cheers :)
It's not like their parents were able to have the birds and the bees talk with their kids, lol, and since they're just going off instinct, I imagine getting poked in a quite sensitive area with long spikey appendages would be a bit of a shock and painful.
It could be both, it could be this way so that in nature the female is encouraged to eat the males after insemination just in case they don't come across another food source until she has finished her job hatching out the egg sac. And during the trance/euphoria like state before some snap out of it and grab the males gives the males enough time to have the best chance possible for a more successful pairing, getting a few chances sometimes. Since seeing that the females stay quite irritated for a bit afterwards, I really do think it's not a pleasant feeling except for those few moments. I was really surprised how long she mostly stayed still.
I think we see captive males get away more often due to the fact the females are well fed and you're also able to interfere if her instincts to take them out kick in. I think you really have something with your theory, and I'm in agreement that it could be both and it's that way in nature for survivability for the females and their offspring.

Your theory about why the females eat their males sounds real good and it makes a lot of sense. . And would make a great aspect of the spiders to study. You could write a paper and publish.
He should absolutely write his own paper or even a book on the subject. His knowledge is made evident by how the spiders respond to his husbandry. He seems to get way less male fatalities than a lot of others in the hobby. Not meaning to start another war on other hobbyists/TH-camrs, but Dave does seem to have the edge on most of the others I've seen. Still enjoy watching Dark Den and TK, though. TK's feeding videos are great, and DD is just pure entertainment all round. Not a massive fan of exotic's lair though because his ADHD way of speaking just causes me too much anxiety lol.

@@hollyking8626 Dave’s videos have helped me so much with my arachnophobia. I am being serious when I tell you even touching a photo of a spider would give me the willies. I still don’t want to own one, but I’m much more tolerant and even gently evict spiders from my house (only if they are out and about, I don’t go looking for them). I hear Dave in my head “ be kind, be gentle and love your spiders”. The last part…more like I’m tolerant and curious which is a 180 from where I was. His videos are so interesting. He’s a fabulous teacher.

That was an amazing video, the close ups you got were outstanding! I think there may be something in your theory about the females eating the male. It looked quite uncomfortable for her and the frantic leg rubbing is her way of checking herself, making sure she's still in one piece 😁 Amazing stuff 😍

I was very impressed with this footage ( and by reading the comments, I know I’m FAR from the only one ), this footage was so closeup and you could see everything! Just when I thought you couldn’t improve anymore, that you were a God Level TH-camr, you become even more God-Like! Absolutely fantastic stuff Dave! Your channel is among my favourites to watch, you’re definitely in the Top 5 coming in at #4, after #3 Wickens Wicked Reptiles, #2 Paul Cuffaro, # 1 Tom’s Road Trippin. All of which are animal channels ( the last one films different locations and is not always animals though ), I don’t think you’ll be surprised that I follow all animal channels except for 2 which are gaming channels as I do like a good gaming video every now and then! I follow 39 channels overall although some have 2-3 channels.

@@daveslittlebeasties A T shirt eh? I’ve grown used to Canadian winter but it’s not fun getting up at 6AM ( sometimes earlier ) to shovel 40-85 cm of snow. We do get at least 2 big snow storms a year in my area.
Also -40 weather as well. Sometimes not as cold but still cold.

Wow she is one huge mama compared to him. Ive watched many pairings and the Indian Violet is the most calm and lengthy pairing I have
seen. She is very laid back and doesnt give the male any grief like some others Tarantulas do with their mates.

You could be really onto something with the females killing the males due to discomfort after mating hopefully we see more research into it

Fantastic footage Dave as always. I agree with your theory regarding the discomfort. Especially after seeing this clip. She risked being out in the open, chose being outside her borrow to tend to the discomfort of her epigastric furrow. The tendency for the female to chomp the male does seem to be in primal response to pain; to protect herself.

That poor little male got the fright of his life when she first popped out. I don't blame him though, the difference in size is really comical. She's an absolutely gorgeous spider too, I'm a big fan of the stripes and golden brown colouring on this species. They seem to have a very similar webbing habit as my Chilobrachys sp electric blue.
I can't believe the size difference, the female is massive compared to the male. The male has certainly made sure, he hit the spot, several times. Hopefully the female is pregnant now. More babies it appears in about a month or so. Fingers crossed.
Also I can see what you're saying about the female feeling uncomfortable afterwards, then lashing out, and frantically cleaning herself. Just lucky the male made a move, out of her way.
Love the video Dave! That pairing was intense, I was scared for the little male. The size difference between males and females in some of the species is insane, I don’t know what benefit it would have for the male. That was the best insertion I’ve seen on TH-cam! I usually can’t tell what’s happening when watching pairing videos but for the first time I actually saw it in this one. Another amazing video Dave! Hope it was successful!

When she came out if her burrow it was clear to me why the male went in, found her, then took off! She is huge compared to him! Great videos with the IPhone! We really got to see what was going on. (Perverts that we are! LOL!)
Wow, that was fascinating... well done getting those amazing close ups I can't get over the size difference between them, what a plucky little fellow he is! I felt quite sorry for her afterwards, she seemed confused almost like she wasn't sure why she was hurting. I think you are right about why they eat the males. Do you think they use some kind of pheromone? because she really did seem to be in some kind of trance for a while then she seemed to shake it off and act confused.

yes, the female puts down a mat of silk and then lays the eggs from the epigastric furrow. She then folds the mat around the eggs into a sac.
Wow ! The size difference between the two is insane ! And yet, he went ahead and did what he had to do.

2 beautiful Tarantulas! When she came out, I said damn she's huge! Then you said she was huge. LOL I was worried about that little guy. I was afraid she was going to bite down on him. That looked too close for comfort. I just wanted him to get it done and get out of there. LOL He was a trooper though.

Dave, i once commented about how I've seen C fimbratus and huahini males use one of their legs to hook and pull the females abdomen in closer. @10:28 in your video that's the behavior I was describing. You can see how he is trying to push on her abdomen, but I think in this case the size difference makes his attempt kind of futile lol. Wonderful job pairing my favorite animals!
She was massive. He was a brave little T! To me she looked so relaxed and the position she was in made her abdomen lean. But I know absolutely NOTHING about spiders besides what I have learned from you.
How or why does bringing the humidity up help them drop a sack?
