True. Every job has a downside. Even famous stars hitting the stage night after night on a 1 year tour. Don’t tell me it doesn’t become a chore and they secretly want to be at home on the sofa alone in peace and quiet!
I have been a player for almost 30 years and started modding, repairing and eventually building for the last 25 years. Being a Masterbuilder at Fender would be my absolute dream job.
Well if you really have something that special and unique to offer them.. hell they just might hire you!? seems that's what they're all about. Don't give up on your dreams whatever you do.. I'm a small time builder and hobbyist myself. built a couple parts casters that I'm very happy with.. and a first time scalloped fretted neck that turned out ok. with little error. encouraged to keep going!
Somehow, I managed to build a couple of guitars in my garage that actually work. Seeing these guys, it's a bit like going up to Michelangelo and saying, "Yep...I painted the ceiling in my house."

Thanks for giving us a tour of Fender's Custom Shop. Very cool to see how they masterfully manfacture these incredible works of art. Its always a treat to see what goes on behind the scenes in creating these unique guitars. If money were no object, I'm sure I could keep them enployeed for many years with all the crazy ideas I have in my head for guitar designs. I started playing guitar when I was 6 years old. Jimi Hendrix gave me my very first guitar lesson when I happen to meet him in the summer of 1969 at a pawn shop in Columbus, Ohio, where he stopped in route to his Electric Ladyland Studio in New York. Hendrix was the sweetest guy you would ever want to meet, he was so down to Earth. I was messing around with a 1963 Fender Jazzmaster guitar and I asked him if he could teach me how to play All Along The Watchtower and he said he couldn't because there are 10 separate guitar tracks in its recording and it would take him a whole week to teach me all those. He taught me how to play Voodoo Chile Slight Return instead. I just turned 60 this year and I always look back on that day in 1969 with great admiration in knowing that I was jamming with one of the great guitarists of all time.
Fender is one of those companies that still has that mojo. They really cover every range and do it really well. Their cheapest offerings are still amazing guitars (I have a Player Tele that I absolutely love!), and what they offer at the very top end are really true works of art. It's awesome to see people who are so insanely good at their craft!
@Boony Tooty Correct, that is why especially as even cheap guitars now due to modern techniques such as CNC are the best option if a person is learning & just picking up the guitar. I suppose if they are going to be committed a better guitar that will pretty much guarantee to be a good player & make it easier to play is the best option, but again it isn't going to cost that much. Gone are the days of terrible guitars that were awful & put people off from playing.
@Boony Tooty In my opinion the sound is just a minor part of why you buy a custom shop guitar. It's getting the exact feel, attention to detail, look, and yes the sound you want all rolled into your "one of" special guitar. Some people buy huge RV's with their disposable income. Some people buy custom built guitars. I agree with you that if a crappy player gets one thinking he's going to become a guitar god, then reality will hit them in the face, but like I said, the whole package is what would entice me if I wanted one.
@@teleguy5699 don’t forget the colors they want too! Nothing to do with tone but a huge part of the draw to buying a custom shop. I happen to love daphne blue with a dark rosewood neck that is a little thicker! Wish they made them in the am pro II line but they don’t!

This was a truly superb, behind the scenes look at arguably the greatest custom guitar manufacturer in the world. I've seen a few videos similar, but none as thorough and well put together as yours. So GREAT! kudos and THANK YOU!!!!!
I got an American Fender Pro2 P-Bass a few months ago. For all I know, the people in that factory room were the people who made the bass i play every day. Seeing the process, the people at work, the skill involved, really makes me appreciate the whole thing so much more, and makes me feel like it was money well spent. That bass flew all the way from California to Korea and I caught it just as it arrived. So lucky to get it.
The Master Built models are obviously amazing and super fun, but personally I like the idea of a custom build more - each step of the build being in the hands of a master in their particular area of expertise
Great video and what a wonderful opportunity to see what goes on at the custom shop! Gives some clarity and insight as to why a custom shop guitar is so expensive (after watching this, I now feel as though the prices are justified)!
I love the thought and creativity in choosing the wood! it says a lot about why a master build is so special and unique. "and of course the attention to detail" but quality is everything!! and usually does separate the cheap from the very expensive!
I really hope the factory workers get treated well. I'm sure almost everyone else gets god-status but the conditions the factory workers work in makes me question things. Hope the get the validation and support they need and feel happy with their jobs, In the end most of us probably wont get a custom shop guitar but rather a regular fender build by these employees. Those people are the real heros here. Thank you! Muchas Gracias! Espero que esten bien!
I worked for PRS for a short while back in the '90s, and that was exactly the case. The suits in the front office were making bank and buying real estate. The people in the factory who actually made the guitars were paid poverty wages. They'd arrive for work in cars that were falling apart and held together with baling wire. The turnover rate in the factory was enormous, because everyone would leave after three or four months to find another job they could actually live on.

The only problem with "custom" shops is that they aren't true custom. Meaning this; I stand at 6'7 so all guitars look like toys to me when they are in my hands. I wanted a custom build guitar body that is slightly bigger than the average guitar. Unfortunately, these custom shops won't build me a body that is slightly bigger. They will cover anything EXCEPT making the guitar slightly bigger. They will do leggo guitar bodies, Game of Thrones guitar bodies, gold leaf covered bodies, and a smoked acrylic "not easy to machine" bodies but they won't carve me out an alder Stratocaster body that is slightly bigger. Now if Buckethead can get a Gibson Les Paul that is slightly bigger, why can't Fender?

Looks pretty organized. I've heard some of the stories of Fender's crazy, last days before the CBS buyout. (i.e., things like shooting cheap student models with custom colors because there was still paint left in the gun, spraying a custom color over a burst finish becase there were no more blanks, etc.). Thanks for the video.
This was so rad. I never watch long videos but I had to see all of this. Just got my brand new American strat this week and re-fell in love with Fender. Great video my dude.

Love Fender but must say, this space is 🥱. Needs a redesign for sure. Looks like someone’s souped up garage. Where’s the nostalgia, the vibe, the mystique? There’s barely any pics on the walls. No Jimi? They should take a page from Gibson and do something like their Gibson lounge. Create an experience where people can come down and feel like they are a part of the Fender family but also have a dedicated artist and custom shop lounge that really highlights what they do . Come on Fender!
I thoroughly enjoyed that. If only I belonged to the “heavy wallet brigade,” I would love to have a bass designed and built by one of those master luthiers. Thanks for providing such an awesome video. 👍

Didn’t they just build an oversized custom telecaster for ray benson who is like 6”7? Odd that they won’t do it for anyone else
Ask guys at Warmoth ! You basicaly want a guitar out of a Preision body !
There is an oversized Tele made by Fender, It’s the Greg Koch model.
Ever try a BassVI? Curious
@@edcolins5498 I tried various times asking Warmoth and they won't do it. If you want, I'll send you the email response they gave me as to why they won't do it.
That’s so freaking cool. Thanks for taking us along
I own several Strats and Telecasters, and all my amps are Fender Tube amps. I own one Gibson SG that hangs on the wall mostly. I have been and always will be a huge Fender fan, and live that's pretty much all I play. Great tour, I'd love to see that place too some day. I could ask a million questions! Thanks for sharing.
fantastic video and your host seems to be a very nice fella. Obviously after all these years it's clear he has been a Fender dude for ever. Well done!!
Whoa that quick change pick guard set up is awesome! I want to have THAT on my custom shop!
What a great video! So cool to look inside such a special factory.
the inspiration of the man himself back in the day, when leo was designing /
modifying inventing and struggling to pay the wages of his employees, its
a legacy to protect and respect, once rid of the toxic C,B,S business model the
present team clearly have the real mojo leo painstakingly created then ! there`s
a heart and soul about the place and its so good to know that .
long may it continue ,,
So cool. Thanks for sharing the tour. I played the El Macombo.
Nice to see You Jason.......Haven't seen you in 20 Years.
Fender are just awesome! They just are worth the hype, in my opinion 👍
Bill Carson was a huge influence on the development of the Stratocaster ... WHAT A PLAYER! Good grief, he was good, and I've been playing 61 years ... I have a '50s American Original and that big soft V is incredible!!
Thank you for the tour , fantastic place , producing great guitars .
My latest guitar is the exact Strat you show in the beginning. But my favorite is my custom shop Telecaster. They do them right!
Enjoyed this, et cetera. Cool to see the process and inside the shop, et cetera.
SIMPLY FABULOUS FENDER..!!! GOD BLESS THE GREAT AMERICAN FENDER GUITAR INDUSTRY. LONG LIVE ROCK..!!! Yeah..
18:05 The best thing is when he started to speak german. I really like it.
Amazing tour, been there once and never forget that friendly and loving atmosphere! Thank you Andrew and Fender people❤
Good camera, audio, editing and overall nice production.
I got a Custom Shop made and it was worth the wait and the money. It's amazing. Great video~!
THANKS, ANDREW!
Scott Buell is a True craftsman. I learned a lot working next to him for 5 years.
your studio is literally so clean
So cool! Thanks for making it and thanks to the guys for making it happen
Fender, fascinating I love them.
I’m not a musician however I do enjoy see people doing their craft. Pretty cool.
What an awesome tour video.
This is a really interesting and informative video. Great tour!
Thanks Laney!
I want to learned how to build inlays! This is so cool. Thank you for the video!
The more I watch it the more I'm hearing the voice of John 5 funny enough. He's a Fender artist and the tour guide sounds just like him.
Thanx For this ! First time ever seeing Fender Making Faux Tortoise Shell Celluloid Precision Bass Pickguards,I've searched for pictures and vids but this is the first! He Was saying how it takes 6 month making them....I wish I can see it in details!!!
Just reading “The Birth Of Loud” tells the Fender story including Les Paul and Gibson, great read, for me it reminds me how attached we become to “norm” supported by the industry, I see new emerging tech means that playing music will no longer be limited to people who are lucky enough to possess skills to play music
Super cool to see the custom shop. Your guide was a great storyteller!
I love the fact of taking wood from historic structures.. Just the fact its super old wood is cool!
I feel like the design room should have some angelic music playing as you enter because for most guitar heads your in heaven
