  • In this episode we take our newly acquired Spicer rear axle and turn it into something beautiful! It a big party of sanding, grinding, painting and other little side-jobs. We are very happy with the result and can't wait to put it back under the car!

    You can use hydrochloric acid to remove rust. In the US it is often sold as Muriatic acid and is available in most hardware stores. I've used it, somewhat diluted, to remove rust from some old cast iron parts. It worked really well, but be aware that you should use it outside as it creates some unpleasant gas (the solution bubbles as it's removing the rust), and chances are the gas produced isn't healthy to breathe.
    On a different topic, removing those rusted bolts and nuts is lots easier if you have a breaker bar or two.

    Why didn't you recondition the moving parts of the rear axle?

      Hi! We checked the condition of the bearings and re-greased them. The brakes were checked and serviced. We already got the advice to replace the pinion seal while we still have access. Would you recommend doing more to the real axle?

    Reusing the old shocks after all the great and laborious work you did on the suspension components seems like penny wise, pound foolish. The shocks may feel OK now, but one wonders how much life they have left.
