FINALLY Fixing the ENGINE BAY - The Vintage Volvo Project #15
We're back! We've been away for quite a while, this repair took us (as always) 5x longer than we thought. But no excuses, there is 18minutes of Bent Axles ready now, and boy are we proud of what we achieved! This time we did what we were looking up to since the beginning, fixing those huge holes in the A-pillar and attaching the engine bay inner wings. Please enjoy!
Join us next time when we will finish all welding on the car!

  • @TheRoiderien
    @TheRoiderien 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Reusing the old shocks after all the great and laborious work you did on the suspension components seems like penny wise, pound foolish. The shocks may feel OK now, but one wonders how much life they have left.

  • @TheRoiderien
    @TheRoiderien 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can use hydrochloric acid to remove rust. In the US it is often sold as Muriatic acid and is available in most hardware stores. I've used it, somewhat diluted, to remove rust from some old cast iron parts. It worked really well, but be aware that you should use it outside as it creates some unpleasant gas (the solution bubbles as it's removing the rust), and chances are the gas produced isn't healthy to breathe. On a different topic, removing those rusted bolts and nuts is lots easier if you have a breaker bar or two.

  • @TheRoiderien
    @TheRoiderien 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also, I don't have much faith in zinc primer to prevent future rust. Remember that Volvo had the body all painted up when the car was new, and look what happened. There are anti-rust coatings that have the ability to creep and protect metal even though small dents in the metal and pin holes in the paint may develop that would compromise the zinc primer. Coatings like these should be very helpful in areas that are closed and therefore can't be periodically inspected.

  • @TheRoiderien
    @TheRoiderien 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You really needed a slap hammer, also known as a dent puller. You also could have saved some time and improved the durability of your repairs by using fiberglass here and there.

    for removing rust from your bolts, use cola. Let it sit for a day and you will get a good result.

    I just found your rebuild series, I very much enjoyed the posts. I have a 67 Amazon I have owned since 1975. I used it for many years as my primary transportation however when I moved to Arizona I didn't drive it very much as there was no A/C. My daughter did use it to go to school her senior year of high school. After that I decided to rebuild it, that was about 10 years ago and finally completed the work 4 years ago. I did not have the rust issues as you encountered as most of its life my car was in Arizona. They are a fun car to drive and fairly easy to work on. The internet has made parts much easier to obtain compared to 25 years ago. Good luck with the project.

      @BentAxles 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dan! So nice to hear your story on your 67 Amazon. You must have a special bond with the car when you've owned it as long as you have. A full rebuild can take very long indeed, I hope we manage to finish within a year. We can't wait to drive it!

    A magnificent achievement , truly. But you have to laugh, there was more fuel dripping out of the cabbie than there was going into the engine. But I'm sure you eventually found that leak and fixed it. Old Volvos never die, they go to sleep, but if you prod them enough they wake up.

Funny how the comments motivate you, because when I watch your progress it motivates me to keep going (unfortunately our Volvo is in worse condition than yours and most people would have dismantledit for scrap and a few spares).
