Yeah, but 95% of the time, the older 2000ish "plug n plays" were Nintendo or Sega Genesis roms on a chip.. well reading the comments, I guess this MK was a fan port
Jakks TV games ran on sunplus system on a chip hardware. Digital Eclipse was commissioned to port the game from the arcade code to a $20 sunplus console. This is 4MB in size while the arcade game is 7MB so corners had to be cut to make it fit.
I'll never forget getting this thing on clearance at the Walgreens by my job when I was in high school. I think I actually still have it in my box of old games/consoles! Lotta fun on a CRT :D
Fun fact. There are 2 versions of these where the dpads are slightly different and the buttons on one is smooth and flat and the other rounded. Got my first one in a pawn shop when they came out and got the other new in Wally world and still to this day have my high scores after almost 20 years!
I loved this version of MK from back in the day! Modern Vintage Gamer did a video on the Jacks Pacific version you have. It has a really interesting back story on how it was made, and how the programmers had to shrink the original 8mb arcade rom into 4mb to fit on the handheld emulator. Thanks for the video!
I never saw that thing, but oh boy, it really showed that who did this wanted to be the best experience as it could be with the used hardware for the task, sure, this can be emulated on MAME, but those (like you) who have the real deal can really apreciate how this was a joy for a very close experience to the Arcade.
I had this back in 2005 and remembered it being a good version. However, I haven't seen the gameplay since then, and I forgot the gameplay was sped up. It's not a big deal, and honestly, it probably made it a funner version. Nice upload, and again, as always, thank you for the memories of better days.
Try it again 20 years later and you may just change your opinion to GREAT version lol even sped up (slightly) because the controls are so spot on it makes the game even MORE fun! No problem dude, memories of better days, always a good thing 👊🏼
I still have mines I remember you told me to liked how it looked when I used it I’m glad you had the chance to use it the fatality are the same like the classic 🔥
Nice, you discovered one of the few good plug and plays! It's the most complete and arcade accurate port of MK1, next to the PC DOS version. Gameplay is just like the arcade, but a little easier. I'm glad have mine from '04, and it still works!
I remember my brother Mike made me a sub zero costume for Halloween the yearwhen mortal Kombat came out and I swear every kid passing by me were stoked seeing me as sub zero and asking about my costume and I told them my older brother Mike made it for me. I will always remember that day for the rest of my life and man I was 9 years old at the time and man we all would play mortal Kombat and street fighter 2 turbo edition and my house be packed with all my friends playing the hell out those games and other great games back then.
Sounds like great memories my high friend lol for real though, that’s pretty cool, I was 11 when MK came out and guess what, my older brothers name is Mike also, we would go to the arcades together and have a lot of great memories back then, sounds like you had a great childhood 👊🏼 thanks for the comment Weedhead! Keep puffin 💨💨
You've really proven to be an MK fan and collector... I own an @tgames handheld console before and played at lot of the Mk games there (as I didnt have a Megadrive when I was a kid).... Great content man! (Like your shirt man, SF fan here as well)
Thank you for the comment Jon I appreciate it. I’m looking into the atgame handhelds for more versions of Mk lol and I’m a huge Street Fighter fan as well, not very good at it, but still have a lot of great memories playing those games too. 👊🏼
@@BushyStallionjust checked the buttons on the pic, maybe the reason why you were not able to do Sub-Zero's slide kick because the lunch and kick buttons ang spaced too far from each other? Just a guess though.. (slide kick is back+ a Punch and kick button right?) Edit: New subscriber here 😊
I remember being with my mom at target and begging her to buy this for me which she did and I played the hell out of it.But it's the reason why it's my favorite game of the original trilogy.
The instrumentation of the music reminds me the Turbo Grafx sound chip, the lack of parallax too. But it´s seems very good to play. Very interesting version.
A great Plug and Play for sure, it’s not emulation but it’s own port. MVG made a video explaining how it was done, I recommend it. Another Plug and Play that you might like it’s the "Arcade Legends : Street Fighter 2 Megadrive/Genesis" by Radica You play the original ROM on real hardware with this plug and play. They managed to miniaturized the architecture in one single chip. Technically less impressive than the MK one but still impressive nonetheless.
Hey Darryl, thanks for the shout out! After watching this video, I just had to have one myself. Someone on eBay had a new one for $39 usd, plus $13 shipping. I went for it! Hopefully it works too. If we got a long enough cable, we could play, lol! I was glad to catch a couple mins of your live stream… I got a call and missed the end of the stream. I left while there was still discussion about A Link to the Past (bad timing). Oh and yes I am the same Jason White as Jascadet. Funny story about how I came up with Jascadet. Remember the old Windows 95 pinball game called Space Cadet? I used that as my username in the game, and have been using it ever since.
Lol that pinball game was great and I played it all the time on our “486” computer lol that’s awesome that you picked up the MK Plug and Play also, you’ll like it 👍🏼 no problem on the shout out, thanks again for the comment 👊🏼
Hey Darryl!!! I got one of these in a yard sale earlier this year. IT WAS FILTHY. After cleaning it out and removing moldy batteries, it worked great! Definitely a fun little unit!!!
I remember when this came out. I remember seeing the ad for it in a Magazine it had Raiden kicking into the TV as Liu Kang doing his flying kick. They advertised this as if it was going to be like the arcade, it was a disappointment even with the backgrounds not moving but the gameplay is pretty good though.
Nice!!! NFL Blitz in the background 👊 I’d love a play through of that too. The people need a Mythologies episode 😅 😅😅. Just giving you a hard time. Hope all is well!

That fact that it is a port is what makes it special. Wonder what the decision process was to get to this. Hardware? Licensing? Access to original assets?
Pretty neat little version of MK. There's no background animations or scrolling in the stages (except the silhouettes going across the moon in the pit stage?), so I wonder if that was due to hardware limitations or memory when it came to porting it.
Thanks man! Asked about this couple months ago. Got mine sealed aswell, but kinda dont want to open it To me it looks a bit like snes version but with blood Good to know its fun to play, incase i ever open mine or maybe buy another used one ;)

It's not emulation actually. It's a beautiful and technically very impressive port. Thanks for the video. Imho the best version next to arcade rev 5.0 is the pc dos version because it fixes some of the moves like sonya's beam shot and gives you lots of options.
I had two of these things. My brother and I would play in the car on road trips. My mom's car at the time had a dvd player and screen built into it for the back seats and we'd connect this to it and play it.
I love this version, I first beat MK1 years and years ago when I was a kid on this plug and play - I actually went to look for it the other day in the shed but it's been through hell lol I checked on eBay and they are only like $20 so I'm DEFINITELY getting another one. Liu Kang main btw lol gotta hit that jump kick to flying kick like Bruce Lee
Maaannn I still have my MK (1992) Plug & Play joystick, this is started my huge love for the first MK (1992). I think I got it at the age of 10 (27 now) around 2006 or so. Back in the day my brother used to borrow MK Trilogy in the PS1 days which was my first and fav MK game and now my second fav video game of all time. Then years later I got this. Although I never got to expercience the real MK arcade days, this joystick always made me feel like I was actaully there also trying to figure out all the crazy secret stuff. I always used to get hype when I saw Reptile jump in-screen before the fight started and tried to fight him on the pit stage (as a kid found out on the internet at the time how to fight him). I think I also figured out how to do my first Fatality with Scorpion and also wondered who could be behind the dragon logo on the character select screen. The same stories I hear people who lived the MK arcade days always talk about. So many great memories and so many batteries where used 😂 and man this was hard as fck haha.
When Midway Arcade Treasures 2 was announced I was psyched when MK I II and 3 were gonna be on it but only II and 3 were on it.When I found out they were releasing a Plug in and Play of MK I I was so happy and I knew I had to own it and still own it…great emulation!
solid version of the game, it looks like they took both the genesis and snes ports, put them somewhat together as a mashup, pretty arcade like perfect and very playable, the price tag i cant ride along with but overall it's a solid 20 dollar plug n play from the 2000s that id buy when the price is right. nice review on this
Great piece of MK history! I've never figured out how to do Sub-Zero's slide on that. Maybe mine is busted, but it never worked no matter what input I tried.
It looks like the Sega Genesis version sounds just like it even the beginning on both sides when they move up and down they're showing all the players just like Sega Genesis
Hi Darryl there was a trick you could do in the endurance matches. You could jump kick when the 2nd fighter come down and one shot them. But is this only on the Snes version?
Big thing I noticed is that there is no background animations; the crowd doesn't move or clap in the courtyard, no animated torches at the Gate, Shang Tsung doesn't clap in the throne room, clouds are static in the Pit etc...
I never noticed this during that play through except on the Pit stage, after reading a few comments of people pointing this out, now it’s all I see while playing lol great.
Dude, this port had no business being this good. Shame though because I think a lot of people passed it up thinking it would just be like emulation. This is a damn good mk1 experience 😂
Whaaa..? U mean this MK is a port/homebrew of MK1 that a fan made, and Jakk bought it off him or something ? Honestly, I thought SF2 and the MK "Plug N Play" were just emu of Sega Genesis roms on a chip.
Is there a mk2 plug and play and you should review the" kow piddy" hand held. I'm not sure how many versions of my are on it but it's a sweet little hand held device
Will you be looking to pick up another one for the two player? I was interested in this plug n play. I didn’t get one mainly because I thought (for some reason) I thought it wasn’t Arcade accurate but I actually thought it was just the Genesis version. Which, I have so i never bothered. Makes me think of that micro arcade cabinet. Where it is the genesis version without blood (smart, right?)
DARRYL I had owned one of these before , , , Sub's Slide move is 🔽+LP BLK Lk simultaneously , , for JAKK's version 😸👍 aka -find and defeat Reptile 🦎 on this version man 🏆🏆👍👍
I'll help you out with that. Lukie Games should have one in good condition. They refurbish their games and consoles. I had to replace my ps2 as the laser reader stopped working. The one I got from them works perfectly. I get things from them all the time so I can vouch for them.
This is an excellent port for the hardware it’s running on. It even supports 2 players via a 3.5mm link cable. BTW the coin battery isn’t for the controls, it is to store your high scores!
CMOS memory is a kind of non-volatile RAM and uses that little coin battery for its power. Just as CMOS memory is used in motherboards of computers to maintain settings, especially for those of date and time, it is used here to store high score information among other things. For more fun history, system boards of arcade games at the time of MK1's release either had their settings stored in CMOS memory or set by dipswitches.
I bought one of those years ago. It was $20 when I purchased it. I never got around to opening it, since I don’t have a crt anymore. I do know that cuts were made to the animation, such as the monks clapping, but the gameplay is top notch. I reckon these didn’t sell well enough to warrant a mk2 version.
digital foundry did a video on this game. This was actually not possible on a emulator at this time, so this game is an original port just for this hand held system. Computers at this time could easily run an emulator, even my computer from 1997 could run this game on an emulator. But remember, this game was sold for 20$ and ran on 2 AA batteries. It had a super low powered weak computer chip for it's time. They developers had to make this version from scratch.
Are we talking the same version? This one came out in 2004 but took 4 AA’s as well as a watch battery for the buttons. Being an original port is correct though as it’s totally unique and not exactly like any other version out there. Thanks for the comment Jesus I appreciate it 👊🏼
It was a nice port, got the blood, gore, scream, and smooth gameplay. Perhaps the only thing that bothers me is that the backgrounds are just still images otherwise it was a fun port to try. Also to get the slide to work you had to press Away + Low Punch, Block, and Low kick all at the same time.
It's a unique version of MK1! Not an arcade ROM or console ROM, but a ported version that the developer made specifically for that hardware.
Yeah, but 95% of the time, the older 2000ish "plug n plays" were Nintendo or Sega Genesis roms on a chip.. well reading the comments, I guess this MK was a fan port
@@joezar33It was officially commissioned for bespoke hardware. That's the opposite of a fan port.
Very unique, thanks for the intel 👊🏼

4MB to 8MB is NOTHING lol. That's actually very generous space to give the port. The SNES & Genesis each only had like 2MBs to work with.

I saw this in stores in 04 but never bothered to pick it up. Kinda wish I did now
Is there a mk2 plug and play and you should review the" kow piddy" hand held. I'm not sure how many versions of my are on it but it's a sweet little hand held device
I had this. It’s pretty good. I thought it was like the SNES and Megadrive/Genesis were combined.
Jakks pacific also did the WWF action figures back in the late 90s
That's pretty cool!
All right. ❤😂
People said it was exactly like the arcade when it came out. If you don’t mind the video quality it works well.
DARRYL I had owned one of these before , , , Sub's Slide move is 🔽+LP BLK Lk simultaneously , , for JAKK's version 😸👍 aka -find and defeat Reptile 🦎 on this version man 🏆🏆👍👍
found this in my parent's basement a few years ago. Guess who left the batteries in, spilling corrosion all over the damn thing.
PS2 port on Deception premium disc trumps all.
It says press start for the other player. Is there some way to plug in another controller into the unit?
yes
If you have two identical plug-and-plays, indeed you can hook them up together and play.
you need two different consoles to do it, it's possible but it works like a game boy link cable
The best way to play mortal Kombat..
wow for plug and play it's super impressive!
nowadays i'm trying to find a good condition PS2 to play my MK shaolin monks original copy.
I'll help you out with that. Lukie Games should have one in good condition. They refurbish their games and consoles. I had to replace my ps2 as the laser reader stopped working. The one I got from them works perfectly. I get things from them all the time so I can vouch for them.
Impressive indeed! Check FB Marketplace for PS2’s I’ve seen some dirt cheap ones on there 👊🏼
I never heard of this one ❤ that's awesome
Check out eBay if you’re looking for a good deal on one of these 👊🏼
@@BushyStallion will thank you for telling me dude
Are there other ones that have 2 and 3?
This is an excellent port for the hardware it’s running on. It even supports 2 players via a 3.5mm link cable. BTW the coin battery isn’t for the controls, it is to store your high scores!
Ahh is that what the battery is for? Ok well that’s cool and great to know. Thank you 👊🏼
CMOS memory is a kind of non-volatile RAM and uses that little coin battery for its power.
At this rate you could make an ultimate tier list ranking the best way to play klassic kombat.
2004. You should be able to fit all versions of MK1, MK2, MK3, MKT, MK4 on it.
Thinking about doing the ps2 mk games one day ?
One day 👊🏼
digital foundry did a video on this game.
Thanks for the comment, the slide on this version doesn’t require you to hold back apparently 👊🏼
Sub 0 Slide Needs to push forward and the 3 buttons .. Instead of hitting back like the original arcade
I still have mine
