Will it drift? Tesla Model Y Performance Track Review

- Kyle takes a brand new Tesla Model Y with only 300 miles on the odometer ripping around the Out of Spec track. We use the 18” forged super lightweight Martian wheels (with tires sized for Model 3, would recommend taller tires for Model Y) and ultra cheap Sentury UHP tires for maximum fun with Model Y. This thing drives like a rally car in Dyno Mode, absolutely love it! There does not seem to be any technical reason as to why Tesla cannot update Model Y to have Track Mode to match Model 3. When and if that happens, the Model Y could be the best only car for a forward thinking car enthusiast.

Brian's reactions were the highlight of this video. Kudo's to him for allowing (and trusting) Kyle to take his Y with 300 miles on it around the track.
Thanks so much for taking the radical step of actually driving the damned car. Every other reviewer so far has treated the Y like a museum piece, at most doing some straight line acceleration runs. Now if only someone would show us what the off road mode does...

I run those same Sentury tires on my 08 Prius in 15s. $43 per tire. I get the warranty which costs $7 from discount tires just like you Kyle. In normal driving as a ride share driver I was getting about 50,000 miles out of them before they were worn out. Never had any handling issues or grip issues not in a Prius of course. But they really are a pretty good tire . I've not had any weird problems. Can't really say anything bad about them if you just need a general all-season tire I definitely recommend them.
They're a good bang for the buck.

Great to see some actual chassi dynamics testing, looks very well balanced! That dyno mode hack looks great! Now there is proper track mode though so you don't really need it as much :)

i think i was enjoying the trama of the passenger more than the drifting...
"The steering is different" I think it's the same, but you can feel the difference between brand new vs used. I bought two Model 3's three months apart and I noticed the same thing. I think it's just a pretty tight setup and it breaks in over time.
Brian the front tires have a huge effect on the streering feel, thats what you are experiencing. if you ever putting racing tires in front, youll notice the steering becomes way tigher and more precise.
That was freaking awesome! Model Y Performance rocks! Now I must get the Performance version!

Funny how you didn’t elaborate on the steering feel, it must be less precise i assume which is a bummer.
I will talk about it more in my full review for InsideEVs (link in bio to the channel) - I feel the ratio is just too quick for a taller vehicle like Model Y, it feels almost quicker than Model 3.
@@OutofSpecMotoring thats very good news! i know the industry standard is to have a dead steering wheel for SUV trucks, but i drove my friends 4runner, and its extremely dangerous how the steering is so light and gives no feedback.
What a wonderful video demonstrating what the car can do even on a slightly rainy day with cheap undersized tires. Great stuff but I'd be like Brian and thinking to myself what would happen if we roll this car by underestimating something. Very fun to watch though!

Kyle, you have short arms? I do too. Bummed to think this car may not fit me.
I got used to it after a few minutes but I prefer a wheel very close for performance driving. You have more control over it that way

Ted Kidd yes wheel seems to extend farther in 3. Never had that complaint in 3 (although I do keep it fully extended)

How does the handling and ride quality compare between 18" and 21"? I have a 2021 Model Y Performance and leaning on getting the Martian Wheels MW03 18" wheels with Michelin 255X55X18 tires. Really appreciate any thoughts!

Yes and mics were mounted to glass so you can’t use that as a baseline
